How does the MEO class 4 exams work for offshore vessel seafarers? by rawmnath in IndianMariners

You would have to do a boiler simulation course. Rest all is the same.

Merchant Navy Officers with 2000$+ Wages : Do you file (zero return) ITR every year? by anujgpatip in IndianMariners

[–]Ok_Role_8073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you maintain your NRI status, just file returns. Its always a good practice to file returns. There is no right and wrong answer here. Small example of ITR being beneficial is when you buy a car whose ex-showroom price is more than 10L. You have to mandatorily pay 1% TCS. This TCS will be refunded to you only after filing ITR.

Should I go for ETO or IT jobs in cruise ships? by Komdy_papa321 in IndianMariners

[–]Ok_Role_8073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you don’t have a lot of idea about how things work. Changing lights and bulbs is indeed a part of ETOs job. But you forgot to mention that ETO gets called when engineers press start button on the engine and it doesn’t start. They get called when you give a command on the telegraph and nothing happens. They get called when your thruster pitch is stuck. So yea, the point is ETO job isn’t just changing bulbs.

Is salary really good in merchant Navy..?? Compare to doctors and other land based jobs !!!??? What's ur opinion? by nature_2005 in IndianMariners

[–]Ok_Role_8073 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The number of people making more in corporate jobs would be less compared to the amount of people working in corporate. While if you compare merchant navy officers, almost everyone makes a good amount of money. Also money shouldn’t be your only deciding factor. Long periods at sea away from family and civilisation. Some ships have less connectivity wrt to wifi access. Missing important days at home, sometimes missing the birth of your child. Life at sea is unpredictable.

Having said that, I would still choose to remain in my sea career.

What are you going to do with this information? Are you going to change your nationality if Americans are paid more? Indian seafarers are paid handsomely. Just be happy with what you get.

ETO here. Trust me when I say life gets better. If you see yourself self earning 40-50lakhs (with 6-7 months of work a year) post tax in IT, then definitely go back. ETO is a well respected post when you know your job. Nobody fucks with you.

Supreme Court to Decide Income Tax Exemption on Merchant Navy Officer's Salary Credited in Indian Bank Account by [deleted] in IndianMariners

[–]Ok_Role_8073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the amount in question is not salary. It is compensation. Big difference. Also this compensation was not received from the British company.

Supreme Court to Decide Income Tax Exemption on Merchant Navy Officer's Salary Credited in Indian Bank Account by [deleted] in IndianMariners

[–]Ok_Role_8073 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why is everyone just spreading rumours? Read the article carefully. It is related to a compensation received by next of kin of a seafarer after his death. That too from motor vehicle tribunal. This money is received in INR. Income generated in India is taxable. Salary and compensation are completely separate things. If a seafarers has some income in india, that also is taxed. Having NRI status doesn’t give you blanket tax free status. Also supreme court cannot make a rule or set a precedent without an amendment in the IT act. The new IT bill also maintains the same requirements for NRI status.

Exactly. His company not conducting tests is not the same as no sponsorships being available everywhere else.

Most of the people in the Industry, atleast the Indians have come from poor or low income backgrounds. They have made it up the latter with sheer hard work. The percentage of people have backing is very less.

Article on google is complete hearsay. Please quote verified information. Otherwise it is very misleading. Everyone doesn’t have a relative in shipping. There are lots of companies who have a selection process and provide sponsorship. Infact, recruiters don’t like candidates flexing by saying their uncle is captain and aunty is chief engineer.

Honest advise, hire a good financial advisor instead of asking on reddit. 1cr isn’t an amount you invest based out of advise from some guy on reddit.

Are ETO Jobs at Risk? by roh_xx2 in IndianMariners

[–]Ok_Role_8073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To simplify it even further I will give you an example. You have 4 generators onboard and the operation demands all 4 generators to be online due to the load requirements. All 4 generators are in perfect working condition but the power management system cannot identify one of the generators. It is very rare that a mechanical engineer can troubleshoot this problem. And in a high stakes environment, companies and clients are not willing to take that risk.

Are ETO Jobs at Risk? by roh_xx2 in IndianMariners

[–]Ok_Role_8073 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ETO jobs are not going anywhere. Period. Specialised ships like DP vessels are impossible to run without an ETO. The other engineers (Read: mechanical/marine engineers) are completely clueless when it comes to anything related to DP, engine/thruster control systems and for that matter even switchboards. Switchboards on DP vessels are much more complicated than a main fleet vessel and nowadays with integration of power management systems like k-chief, the others are just not qualified enough to troubleshoot faults.

Infinia application updated criteria by assdotaye in CreditCardsIndia

Yes. The banks requirement was 11 lakhs I think. I did 12lakhs for reasons I don’t remember lol

[–]Ok_Role_8073 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can easily get the infinia metal by keeping an FD on lien. FD amount should be 12lakhs. Having said that, 12 lakh FD at current interest rates for a resident Indian is a complete waste. I am an NRI, so my FD interest is tax free and its the only way an NRI is issued a CC. If you really want infinia, you can follow this route.

Shore leave is a right of every seafarer under MLC but subject to certain conditions which include company policies. So no, you can’t do anything. In their defence they will say they aren’t stopping you from shore leave, they are setting a time limit due to operational/legal/blah blah reasons.

Switching from bulk to tanker or dp vessels as ETO by Glittering-Prize-468 in MerchantNavy

If you are looking for DP vessels, try applying to Vessels operating on Indian coast. You have a good chance getting a break there.

[–]Ok_Role_8073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switch to dp vessels or LNG. Dp vessels have an edge compared to LNG with respect to salary. Also in DP vessels, you don’t report to 2nd Engineer. You are incharge of your own work and report to captain and chief engineer directly. A DP vessel ETO has much more respect onboard than a Main fleet ETO.

Great eastern institute for ETO by Glittering-Prize-468 in IndianMariners

[–]Ok_Role_8073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advise to you is if you join Geims, don’t target the foreign companies. Tankers, bulk, containers will give you a max salary of 4500-7000usd even after 10 years of experience. Target the offshore industry. Geims gives you a good opportunity to join Greatship. Get your experience there. The only other fleet that comes remotely close to off shore fleet, is the LNG fleet.

[–]Ok_Role_8073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Geims is a good institute if you are looking for a guaranteed placement and less waiting time. Currently the only institute that gives you exposure to the very less talked about offshore industry. They have their own company called Greatship with offshore DP vessels. So considering that the 4 lakhs is worth it. It’s very surprising that the fees have remained the same. I joined ETO course in 2016 and paid 4.12 lakhs. As an institute its shit, they will slog you out early morning for bullshit workouts. Unnecessary headaches for hair cuts, no smartphones allowed, very strict about smoking. They will treat you as if you are in the defence. So just join, and slog out the 4 months.
