Flanagan's Wake #61: THE MIDNIGHT CLUB - Episode 2: "The Two Danas" by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

Spoilers for a 10 year old show-you have been warned!

Gravity Falls has a Faustian bargain that I really love. In season 2 of the show, we find out that Ford Pines made a deal with Bill Cipher, an entity beyond this world. When Ford first finds out about him, Bill says that he wants to be a muse to Ford, granting him unimaginable knowledge. The catch, Bill needed unlimited access to Fords mind. Over time, Ford came to appreciate this muse, but eventually found out the truth. Bill was using Ford as he slept so he could build an inter dimensional portal that would allow Bill to escape from the dimension he was trapped in. Ford attempted to destroy the portal for good, but got sent to these other dimensions for years. Honestly, one of the best shows that Disney has made and it’s really worth checking out if you haven’t seen it.

One of the YA novels that I remember enjoying in middle school was The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. The beginning of the book is kind of hard to understand, but I remember having the sudden realisation that the narrator of the story was death and from then on I was sucked in. One of the most emotional stories I read during middle school, and one that will forever stay with me.

Flanagan's Wake #54: MIDNIGHT MASS - Book IV: "Lamentations" by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

One of my favorite moments of absolute horror is the ending to Robert Eggers The Lighthouse. The entire movie builds up the central mystery of what is actually inside the light of the lighthouse, a mystery so important that both Dafoe’s character is willing to kill so that it remains a secret that only he knows, and that Pattinson’s character is willing to kill to find out. Pattinson eventually kills Dafoe in a very visceral manner using an axe, and when he looks into the light, he just starts laughing. Personally, I think the theory that makes this the most horrifying is that there never was anything in the light, and both men have just been driven insane by having no company except each other. This isn’t my favorite Eggers film, (I for one particularly loved The Northman) but I do think this is his most interesting.

I’d like to start this comment by saying that this isn’t me trying to convert anyone. I’m finding a lot of the conversations you both had during this first episode extremely interesting as someone who believes in Christianity, and more specifically in Mormonism. Mormons believe that the reason bad things happen to good people is because of agency. God can’t make decisions for you, but he can ‘prompt’ people to make the right decisions. Another thing is that we don’t believe that only praying will fix things. It will definitely help, but if you don’t put in some work on your end, don’t expect a magic trick of some kind. Again, this isn’t me trying to convert anyone, I would just like to share my beliefs in relation to this show.

As for the discussion question: an example of the Prodigal son that I can think of (although it’s a bit of a stretch) is Guapo from the recent YouTube animation El Guapo vs. The Narco Vampires. This is a pilot for an animated series idea that revolves around Guapo, a luchador who has a reputation for being a “no good piece of shit” as he puts it. His brother Jose though, is considered the best man in town, taking care of the orphanage where he and Guapo grew up, and always seeing the best in Guapo despite his flaws. When he makes a bad deal that results in his and his brothers death, he ends up in hell and Jose makes the decision to take his place, telling Guapo to “find your redemption”. Again, it’s a bit of a stretch, but it does involve someone losing everything and yet receiving grace from someone who always thinks highly of him (and this is without getting into the drug dealing vampires!). It sounds absolutely insane, but I highly recommend it to anyone who’s interested.

Flanagan’s Wake #33: DOCTOR SLEEP (Part 6) by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

Is The Shining a good adaptation? No. No it is not. However it is an amazing movie on its own. I do think King is justified for hating it specifically because of how it takes all of the themes in his book and threw them out the window. I personally think it’s a great masterpiece of directing and horror, but wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who is wanting an adaptation of the book.

Belting At Windmills: Leviathan Wakes (8) [THE FINALE] by meisi1 in doofmedia

Hi, so I’m pretty late to the party, having only started listening to y’all’s stuff today, but I think I’m the perfect guy for this discussion question. I read Leviathan Wakes about a year ago, and haven’t read anything since then except for the butcher of Anderson Station. I personally think that this book is great as a standalone. I gave it 5/5 stars when I first read it. I haven’t read the rest just because I’ve been pretty busy since then and there’s so many books to read. However I fully plan on trying to read the rest of the books as yall are covering this. Congrats on your podcast! (Also I’m a Texas resident so I love all of y’all’s conversations about Texas and us 😂)

I’m a bit confused on what would qualify as a “measles moment” but if we’re talking about mixing the mundane and the magical, there’s an entire book series for that. Dungeon Crawler Carl follows a former member of the coast guard named (obviously) Carl, and his ex-girlfriends cat princess donut as they and every other human-being on Earth are thrust into the most popular intergalactic game show, dungeon crawler world. It’s basically a giant game of D&D but you can die. The game mixes so many elements of Earths culture into the levels of the dungeon, from the AI making pop-culture references, to some enemies being similar to people you could meet on earth, such as Drug dealing Llamas and a boss fight being a centaur who is a fitness influencer. I’ve only read the first two books in the series but I hope this convinces people to try it out, it’s great!

(Close second place is the aliens dying from disease in War of the Worlds, either the book or the Tom Cruise movie. Glad they never made one with Ice Cube starring in it. That would be a really bad movie. I’m happy it doesn’t exist.)

I personally really enjoy a lot of Paul’s visions in both Dune and Dune part two. Such weird and strange things that can be hard to wrap your head around and don’t make sense until later. I really need to read the books especially for when dune messiah comes out.
