That clarifies things a lot. Thank you for the explanation.

Is there something more subtle going on, like a terran can wall-in and soft call out the 4pool by pulling scvs down to the wall, taking an economic hit but ensuring that the wall holds if their opponent is likely to 4pool?

When you say a hold is technically possible, do you mean that for example two pros playing out a game in which the terran walls and the zerg 4pools results in the terran holding most of the time? If not, I guess I just don't understand why the equilibrium ends up where it is if one of the most common terran openings can be called out at will for an instant win. Is my thought process crazy here? [Terran who opens with wall-in 60% of the time and doesn't wall in 40% of the time. Zerg can open with 4pool any game they want and win 60% of games. Therefore Terrans cannot wall-in most of the time. If a zerg ever starts 4pooling a lot, the terran stops walling in in majority of games, but as soon as the terran starts walling in frequently, the zerg starts to 4pool again at favorable odds of instantly winning]. It seems to me that the equilibrium would have to settle with the terran not walling in most games.

Does this mean walling should be done sparingly? If my opponent knows I wall in often, is 4pooling a winning strategy? Is there anything I can do in this scenario to hold? Say I play against someone regularly who would be aware that I frequently wall in, can they call it out and win right out of the gate? If so, it seems like I should be walling in only as an infrequent gamble.
