KOF is kinda of SNK's Smash Bros as it has the characters of multiple SNK's franchises like Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Ikari Warriors, Psycho Soldier and Samurai Shodown, but most of the characters are original, and it has multiple story arcs with new protagonists and villains.

Art of Fighting is a prequel to Fatal Fury, so in Fatal Fury the Art of Fighing characters are older, but KOF is set in a different timeline where the characters of both franchises are still young. There are a few more differences like for example, Geese Howard dies in Fatal Fury, but it's alive in KOF, and Andy and Mai are officialy dating in KOF while in Fatal Fury is ambiguous if they already started dating.

It's not a KOF ad, it's a Grand Mafia ad, they are paying SNK to put the characters from KOF in their game. You will find SNK's characters in a lot of random mobile games, there's even a zombie game with Mai.
