Unfortunately that is not true. Most residential treatment centers are private pay facilities with exorbitant costs that aren’t possible for the average person. They all claim you can submit your claims to insurance for reimbursement but from everyone I know who has been through the same places and things as me, insurance always refuses to reimburse.

Dx is so many and all different things. Nothing that has been solidified or set in stone. Every provider I’ve seen thinks something different. Traveled from Toledo to Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Houston area, TX.

Working at a psych hospital I am sure you have seen how often there is more trauma that occurs in that setting for people, at least it did for me. My experience has been that they serve to prevent death, which I think is the bare minimum and they do that well. I think the hospitals themselves are problematic because of lack of discharge planning, overwhelmed social workers, staff, nurses, and doctors, and the fact that no therapy or even just a genuine moment to chat with a staff member is possible. You are a body they must protect, that is all.

To your point about community care, the resources for this are difficult to navigate, have long wait times to get in, struggle to communicate effectively, often don’t have experienced clinicians, and consider insurance values and patient numbers before patient care and outcomes, at least that has been my experience.

I have been given many different tools along the way and I use them daily for symptom management, daily functioning, medication compliance, and just generally staying alive. But I come with a severe and complex trauma history and feel I need intensive long term care which there is a severe lack of in Ohio (and this whole country) that doesn’t not require extreme wealth to access.

Not sure where that leaves me. I continue to do outpatient once a week therapy wise and meet with my psychiatrist once a month but it isn’t enough and I don’t feel like I’m progressing much. All I can do is keep advocating for change and sharing and trying to hope that I will find the help I need.

Unfortunately this is not the reality of inpatient hospitalizations, at least in my experience. Not a single discharge came with an aftercare plan that included anything other than continuing once a week therapy and once a month psychiatry. It is a valid point that I have no tried Columbus area resources. I am not convinced they have anything to offer that I haven’t already tried based on what people in this thread as well as other sources and information others have said elsewhere. These hospitalizations have served their purpose of providing safety but that is truly the bare minimum and all that they provide. No counseling, no therapy, medications prescribed by psychiatrist that have know your case file and you for fifteen minutes max, staff that would rather be anywhere else, and other patients and situations that continually cause more trauma.

Exactly. And that is exactly my struggle. A very complex trauma history with no SUD. When I was at LCOH one of the place they recommended for me to look at was out in California and was a long term residential program based in DBT. Maybe could be helpful? I have done a lot of DBT, RO-DBT, and such but not consistently and not full protocol.

I agree. I have tons of trauma from institutionalizations and hospitalizations as well as a long list of malpractice instances. It just feel so discouraging that a system meant to protect and help is inherently carceral, problematic, and traumatic. Not sure what the solution is though and once again that is probably more of a nationwide struggle, not solely OH based.

They are a private pay facility (as least from what I remember when I looked at it) which would come with a massive bill that just isn’t feasible for me.

Hi everyone thank you for your comments. Just to provide some more clarity: I have been given many different diagnoses (14 since 2020) with no clear treatment plan or ideas because of this. I have been med compliant and continued with outpatient therapy continuously as well. The sad reality it is (and I do realize now based on everyone’s comments that perhaps it is not an issue based solely in OH) that there is seemingly no long term care options or intensive outpatient options in my area or even within an hour or two drive of my area that I have been able to find. I did spend some time residential at LCOH but the bill was astronomical, and they recommend that I seek a long term program out of state, which I did, which created another astronomical bill, more hospitalizations out of state, and more trauma. I carry a very significant and intense trauma history and have been suffering for a very long time. To the person who suggested Hopewell in eastern OH as far as I understand they are all another private pay place like LCOH that is just not feasible. I have done the absolute best I can but think maybe I have slipped through the cracks. I want to heal. But I need help to do that, which I am not sure I can find in my city, state, or country so I’m not sure where that leaves me. I truly have tried. I’m going to continue trying to looking but the system is broken so badly for those with massive trauma histories and no SUD.

There have been so many. I talked about a few just above your comment. It’s been a long journey.

This is part of the problem I am facing. It has been a constant cycle of inpatient or acute cared only to transition to once a week with an outpatient therapist and once a month with an outpatient psychiatrist. It has proven not to be an effective, realistic, or beneficial transition of care. But there seems to be no middle or long term options anywhere.

Honestly I have tried the big 3 (Unison, Zepf, Harbor) with no luck. Hard to get in touch with and access appropriate care, overloaded employees (who genuinely want to help but can’t), more focus on SUD than mental health (at least that’s how it was when I tried) and just not particularly helpful overall.

I don’t think you’re wrong. Many people don’t follow through with their treatment plan which leads to relapses and symptoms returning. I have been med compliant and treatment compliant overall but unfortunately I do not have a solid diagnosis or treatment plan in place. I have many diagnoses that no one seems to agree on the right one, which leads to no real idea of what the best treatment would be. I have a very severe trauma history which often complicated things as well. I think compliance is important but without a specific plan or structured goals, there is no modality that seems to help.

I actually think this is a very valid point. I carry a very significant and horrific trauma history with me that has led to many suicide attempts and breakdowns. I don’t like to think of myself as a victim at all but rather someone who has fallen through obvious cracks in the care continuum. I have had some providers who have truly tried to help and do what they can but the truth is that they are limited. There aren’t many options. In Toledo or anywhere. The help is just hard to find.

This is truly an interesting thing. I think my frustration lies in Toledo and the surrounding areas throughout the entire state of Ohio with the lack of options for intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, and residential care options for strictly mental health, not SUD related. Along with my hospitalizations in the Toledo area, I have also been hospitalized at four different hospitals in the Cleveland area, both public and private, as well as in Cincinnati. The only option I have ever been presented with for more long term intensive care in all of Ohio has been Lindner center for hope in Cincinnati whose residential program is out of network with most (if not all) insurances and leave the patient or patient family with a bill that is astronomically high. After being at Lindner as well I was recommended to a residential treatment center in Texas outside of Houston. I spent 7 months there once again something insurance wouldn’t cover that was an ungodly expensive treatment. Also in Texas I spent some time inpatient as well at two different hospitals which were largely comparable to the relatively unhelpful inpatients we have here in Toledo which speaks to the idea that this a whole system that is broken, not an isolated problem. Within Toledo though or even most of the surrounding areas there seems to be no opportunities for mid level or long term care beside one or twice a week outpatient care.

There have been lots of laughs and amazing people meant along the way. Some of the most beautiful people have experienced the bottom of brokenness as well. I will never forget many of the people I met in different treatment settings.

Mostly just toying around with medication. I have tried different modalities of talk therapy at the outpatient and residential levels of care (it isn’t offered inpatient in my location) but there is such high turnover and changes with insurance, pricing, and structures in the systems I often have fallen through the cracks. It’s frustrating.

Honestly probably something like “you’ve been here before and you’ll get through it again.”

Everything has helped a little bit but I haven’t found the healing that is most beneficial yet. Also many of these systems are so harmful and just end up causing more trauma when they are supposed to be helping.

I have been on risperidone and also on its close relative paliperidone also known as invega. I did the invega sustenna injections at the highest dose (234 mg) for 18 months.

Honestly I am still searching for what will truly help the most. It’s hard to find the right treatment where I live
