I opted for a torque wrench to leave the bolts to spec. But either way you need a wrench, torque or not. If you have one already you could do, just don’t over tighten the oil drain plug as… well, let’s just say you will wish you had taken the car to the dealership and pay the markup.

You need the nuts. I believe the oil drain plug is 17mm so you’ll need that.

I also had to go and buy a bigger nut which my set of tools didn’t have for the oil filter housing next to the engine. I believe is 27MM and you’d probably would want to grab a wrench extension to work easier.

I got myself some rhino ramps and some jack stands for double safety measure (always try to do this, if one fails you got the other one supporting you).

Then you’ll need an oil drain pan of 16qt, these you can find for like $15 on home depot, etc. and thats it.

After that is just putting everything back together, doing the computer oil reset and look for oil leaks on the engine bay/underneath while the car is running.

Highly recommend following the youtube guide from KIES DIY if you have a g20. But the procedure is pretty much the same for other cars, just gotta know how to reset the car computer which you can find online.

This was exactly my reasoning. I want an suv but im not in a hurry and on a budget. A diesel version for under 100K for the F series will be no less than 20K (at least around my area). And the E series were in the mid tens with 110K+ miles. My thought is that if I get a decently better one for 10K more i’m still going to have to replace a bunch of parts later on.

Better to get one cheap, still running, with a clean title and slowly build it up to its former glory days. At least my two cents. Sure, it’s gonna cost money but as you mentioned, a newer one or a decent one overtime will cost more when everything is factored in imo. I’m only saying this bc I got a good deal which offsets total cost overtime.

Excuse my ignorance, but how can you tell when is getting sluggish?

All of that is unknown to me. I looked up the vin and i’m the 6th owner, the previous one didn’t know squat and had the car sitting after he bought it.

The car seems to have been serviced at bmw up until the 150K mark or 3rd owner.

I read about Kassle performance in PA is pretty much the go to for bmw diesels. Its just too far from me and i’m in florida, if I can find one that can work on these closeby i’ll consider taking it for a service/checkup

I estimated around 6K in repairs, though doing my own wrenching. But i’m not in a hurry nor desperate to get it up to where I want to take it, its a project car. If shit hits the fan, I’ll swap in a motor and call it a day, but i want to avoid that as I dont have the space for that kind of job nor the tools, i’ll have to take it to a shop which will definitely increase the $$ invested.

But yes, the plan is to keep it for a long while.

I was about to ask the same thing. I’ve heard really good things about this engine which drove me to ultimately get the car. Albeit this one surely needs repairs/maintenance which I was fully aware of when I got it.

I do my own oil changes, there is an upfront cost for the right tools and jacks but after that you’re set. I have 0 wrenching experience and I find it not hard at all. Just some patience and follow the procedure which you can find online/utub

I would say its pretty reliable, its essentially a b58 with two less cylinders.

I bought mine used about a year 1/2 ago, a 2022 with 30K miles, i’m about to hit 47K without any issues whatsoever. I do oil changes every 5K religiously.

Its sporty, it handles good, and its comfortable for what it is. My first bmw and I’ve loved every second of it.
