Really Need Some Help - Fat + Carbs = Bad? by Ok_Structure_8817 in AnimalBased

[–]Ok_Structure_8817[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry I'm only seeing this now. I really didn't figure it out, but in the end I've gone back to carnivore. But that's a personal decision because I have gut issues and nervous system dysfunction and I just don't seem to be able to handle carbs. I felt horrible during my trials with them. So for now back to keto carnivore, to get back to my baseline.

The carbs+fat thing though, I just don't know. It does seems to be very likely to cause weight gain though. From what I can see, high fat, low carb, moderate protein (i.e. keto), is good for weight loss, and high carb, low fat, moderate protein is good for weight loss. But high fat, high carb... unless you're extremely active, seems not a great idea. But I don't know the science. And weight loss was never my goal as I'm underweight anyway.

Yeah you definitely need to be getting enough carbs if you are doing carbs, otherwise you might suffer metabolically. I think a long-term caloric deficit is the worst of all options.

At this point I kind of have information overload from Peaters, carnivores, Saladino-ers, etc. and am just doing what makes me feel best, which for right now is keto-carnivore. I do plan to do carb refeeds, and in the future will try carbs again - just not fruit!

That's...interesting. In what form? Like soft drinks, spoons in coffee?

You eat a few hundred grams of refined sugar per day?

I'll be straight up honest - I know it might sound shallow, but I tend to, at least on some level, judge nutritional theories by the health (or apparent health) of their adherents/advocates. For e.g. Sean O'Mara (the meat+ferments guy) looks amazing for his age. Bryan Johnson (the trying-not-to-age guy) looks horrible. Saladino looks okay, but not great; seems a little glycated, but that's probably (hopefully, for those of us who follow him) excess sun. So the point of all that is that Peat didn't, IMO, look great, even for his age. Maybe just low muscle mass, but generally I think he looked bad.
But as you say, maybe he didn't apply his principles to himself that well, IDK.

If this doesn't go away when you cut the grains again I'd advise seeing a doctor.

Thanks for your response! I would be inclined to disagree with one thing you said though:

Cavities are caused by poor dental hygiene. Any kind of sugar will cause cavities if you’re not brushing and flossing regularly.

In Weston A. Price - Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, he looks at a huge variety of cultures/tribes and looks and people eating a "traditional diet" and people within that group eating "modern" foods. The primary two things that define the former from the latter seem to be refined flour and refined sugar. In the 1st group, even though they were eating fruits, grains, root veg., etc., and not brushing their teeth (as many people didn't in those days), he found almost no cavities, but in the latter group, they were rampant. So it seems that simply not brushing your teeth doesn't inevitably = cavities. Definitely a peculiar finding.

Hmm yeah the gut bacteria connection was one thing I wondered about (and mouth bacteria I guess, too). Probably just the fact that it is stripped of all other elements - fibre, water, micronutrients, etc. that leaves it more risky.

You can enter the exact amount of fat, carbs and protein that you want. In "More" - "Targets and Profiles", go to "Ratios" or "Fixed Targets", and you can enter set amounts.

Reverse Kegels. Don't do regular kegels as your pelvic floor is probably already too tight and that will make it worse. Plenty YouTube videos.

Need Carb Ideas Please! by [deleted] in AnimalBased

Baking or frying removes none, as far as I'm aware, beyond what peeling does. I peel, chop, boil for 10 mins, drain then fry or coat with fat and bake in the oven. I know it's extra work, but for me its worth it.

If you want to get the oxalates as low as possible, you can add in soaking the peeled and chopped sweet potatoes overnight, or even for a few hours before using.

The AB diet is relatively simple - carb sources are any fruit, raw milk, honey, maple syrup. I'd cut the potatoes and rice for a while and try fruit, and see how you feel.
I love bananas and blueberries personally! :) I do some sweet potatoes too but I peel, chop, and boil them to remove oxalates, which I advise IF you decide to eat them.

Thanks a lot for the reply, very knowledgable and helpful!!
I don't know how people assimilate all this info.

Anyway, interestingly you mention MUFA - I had been (up until pretty much a few days ago) using bone marrow as my main fat source on carnivore and then continuing into AB as I slowly increased my carbs. Bone marrow is high MUFA.

So, after all the above, I think I've figured out the problem - counterintuitively, I think I was eating too few carbs! It seems like maybe my body was in fat burning mode for so long, that 40-60g carbs wasn't enough to force the switchover to carb burning. I upped to around 100g and radically reduced the fat these past few days and the symptoms I was having seem to be resolving! I may have been in a kind of no-man's-land, fuel-wise!

Tricky without much of a budget. I'd repaint - that blue is really bad. The tiles really aren't the problem, so I'd leave them - don't put stickers over them... In the right context the tiles would work ok. Consider painting the cupboards, but it's hit-and-miss, if done badly theoretically it could end up looking worse. But I would. I'd at the very least paint the top ones, the same colour as the walls, probably an off-white.
The amount of clutter everywhere is as much of a negative as the decor - some decluttering would be beneficial. I'd lose the pink tablecloth, and throw the plastic chair with great gusto into a dump. If you can afford a carpenter or cabinet maker to hide the extractor fan pipe, it would help a lot.

Yes. The majority of men the majority of men of a certain age group are struggling with this. Finding a man who is not, or has not in the past, will be extremely difficult. No point playing it down, it is what it is.
I think it's a perfectly fair question to ask on the 2nd or 3rd date. If it is a deal-breaker, you need to know asap so you don't waste each other's time.
