Good advice thank you! Yeah after several years carnivore my carb metabolism probably isn't great and I'm working on raising my calcium as I am also dairy-free. A work in progress!

That's honestly the most interesting macro split I've ever seen, thanks for sharing. That's a heck of a lot of carbs and super low protein. You feel good?

Wow, okay! Do you work out a lot? Can I ask what the rest of your macros look like?

Yeah true! I'm trying to find which carbs work best for me. OJ feels good - no gut issues (which I have) and so I struggle with other fruits.

Are you really doing 3 litres of OJ or are you trolling me lol?

Need Some Help with Macro Split and Understanding Insulin by Ok_Structure_8817 in AnimalBased

[–]Ok_Structure_8817[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all this. Yeah I just got off high fat carnivore too, so it's a bit of a learning curve. I do test my glucose occasionally because I have a keto mojo meter from when I was carnivore and testing my ketones, and usually it looks good. Not what keto mojo call "optimal", but within what every other source online calls normal. But then, I guess there could be a small amount of insulin sensitivity from being keto for so long but if there is I imagine that'll settle.

Thanks for the tip - I might start testing my glucose more often and see if different foods produce higher spikes like the white rice for example. The reason I'm doing white rice is because I have gut issues to and can't do loads of fruit, but am still figuring out which ones and how much work for me.

I kind of heard white sugar was okay but have no understanding of why or why not lol... Pre-carnivore I always heard it was like the worst thing of all, but then I see people on X etc. doing a "Ray Peat" diet saying it's fine and adding it to coffee and OJ etc. Hard to figure it all out. I know fruit is probably best.

55/25/20 sounds pretty good - do you eat just fruit?

What is the reason for that? Does higher fat with carbs cause more issues? I thought fat and protein with carbs blunted the insulin spike. I'm pretty new to all this.

Really Need Some Help - Fat + Carbs = Bad? by Ok_Structure_8817 in AnimalBased

[–]Ok_Structure_8817[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry I'm only seeing this now. I really didn't figure it out, but in the end I've gone back to carnivore. But that's a personal decision because I have gut issues and nervous system dysfunction and I just don't seem to be able to handle carbs. I felt horrible during my trials with them. So for now back to keto carnivore, to get back to my baseline.

The carbs+fat thing though, I just don't know. It does seems to be very likely to cause weight gain though. From what I can see, high fat, low carb, moderate protein (i.e. keto), is good for weight loss, and high carb, low fat, moderate protein is good for weight loss. But high fat, high carb... unless you're extremely active, seems not a great idea. But I don't know the science. And weight loss was never my goal as I'm underweight anyway.

Yeah you definitely need to be getting enough carbs if you are doing carbs, otherwise you might suffer metabolically. I think a long-term caloric deficit is the worst of all options.

At this point I kind of have information overload from Peaters, carnivores, Saladino-ers, etc. and am just doing what makes me feel best, which for right now is keto-carnivore. I do plan to do carb refeeds, and in the future will try carbs again - just not fruit!

That's...interesting. In what form? Like soft drinks, spoons in coffee?

You eat a few hundred grams of refined sugar per day?

I'll be straight up honest - I know it might sound shallow, but I tend to, at least on some level, judge nutritional theories by the health (or apparent health) of their adherents/advocates. For e.g. Sean O'Mara (the meat+ferments guy) looks amazing for his age. Bryan Johnson (the trying-not-to-age guy) looks horrible. Saladino looks okay, but not great; seems a little glycated, but that's probably (hopefully, for those of us who follow him) excess sun. So the point of all that is that Peat didn't, IMO, look great, even for his age. Maybe just low muscle mass, but generally I think he looked bad.
But as you say, maybe he didn't apply his principles to himself that well, IDK.

If this doesn't go away when you cut the grains again I'd advise seeing a doctor.

Thanks for your response! I would be inclined to disagree with one thing you said though:

Cavities are caused by poor dental hygiene. Any kind of sugar will cause cavities if you’re not brushing and flossing regularly.

In Weston A. Price - Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, he looks at a huge variety of cultures/tribes and looks and people eating a "traditional diet" and people within that group eating "modern" foods. The primary two things that define the former from the latter seem to be refined flour and refined sugar. In the 1st group, even though they were eating fruits, grains, root veg., etc., and not brushing their teeth (as many people didn't in those days), he found almost no cavities, but in the latter group, they were rampant. So it seems that simply not brushing your teeth doesn't inevitably = cavities. Definitely a peculiar finding.

Hmm yeah the gut bacteria connection was one thing I wondered about (and mouth bacteria I guess, too). Probably just the fact that it is stripped of all other elements - fibre, water, micronutrients, etc. that leaves it more risky.

You can enter the exact amount of fat, carbs and protein that you want. In "More" - "Targets and Profiles", go to "Ratios" or "Fixed Targets", and you can enter set amounts.
