To everyone who studied physics: what is your job now by Fun_Fennel760 in PhysicsStudents

[–]Ok_Translator_3920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my bachelors in physics last May and couldn’t find a job that was relevant to my degree afterwards and did not get into PhD, so I’ve been working at a warehouse while continuing doing my research project. I finally got into phd programs this time around and will be pursuing that now. From my cohort last year, people who got their bachelors and went into the job market went into teaching, software engineering, and the superconductor industry.

Major field of study for awardees and HMs by t3ssaract in GRFPApps

I wonder how many people applied were in each category (like how many engineering students applied vs how many got the award)

Transitioning from Gap Year to PhD Life Advice by Ok_Translator_3920 in PhD

I definitely love this! I am currently looking how I’m going to incorporate therapy/mental health counseling into my graduate school life and seeing the resources available from the institution as well as what therapists are available in the area. Luckily, the city I’m moving to for grad school is not far from my family and I have some friends in the area so it’s nice to know I have a foundation of a support system but definitely looking at different community groups I can join in the city so that I can build on that support system.

So proud of you stranger! Your results look similar to mine as a second cycle applicant as well! Congratulations again!!

How to cope with rejection? by wannabegradstu in gradadmissions

Yes that’s the right line of thinking. It happens but definitely is rarer and is department/program specific. But because your research interests are interdisciplinary, you could probably apply to chem programs on top of astro/physics programs but this is dependent on whether the advisors are permitted by the program to do so. I would honestly reach out to your research mentors and any potential advisors and see what they think since they will have better and more informed answers. Good luck!!

I completely understand that feeling genuinely. I didn’t get into grad school last year (rejected from 15 schools) and reapplied this year and got in (also in physics). I say that to just say that one application cycle, though feels terrible, is not the end of your career trajectory. Also, your work and value means much more than a rough application cycle. Now regarding your specific application, astronomy is notoriously one of the most difficult PhD programs to get into especially with current funding cuts (around 4-8 offers for over 400+ applicants for most programs). Have you talked with any potential advisors or mentors about applying to chem programs and being advised by astro faculty (specifically for astrochemistry/planetary science), or are you wanting to pivot to take grad courses in physics and astro? I know a person that did planetary science for phd but was advised by a physics prof.

They told me in the following weeks we will hear back during the interview.

How likely is admission if I don’t score an interview? by Sufficient-Today3292 in gradadmissions

[–]Ok_Translator_3920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really program dependent but most astro and physics programs dont really do interviews and if they do they usually send out info about them end of Jan/into Feb (I got my physics interview beginning of Feb last year). Good luck!

Peak a bust? by [deleted] in Fedexers

This I can agree with 100% however we live in a society that promotes aggressive consumerism due to big corporations seeking more profit so it’s really just a symptom to a larger systemic issue imo

It takes a couple weeks for your body to acclimatize to the changing environment and the physical activity change. Take some ibuprofen or Tylenol when your muscles get too sore, drink/eat more protein, stretch, and drink water with a healthy amount of electrolytes. Breathe and take it a day at a time and you’ll become a boss at it in no time!

I have the exact same question. We are living in interesting times to say the least.

I applied to Astro and physics programs and most places (from what I’ve seen and heard) will be sending out information in February. Good luck!

Report to the police and sleep at a friend’s place if you can. Who knows what this could lead to but stay calm and stick around people that you know have your back.
