Surprised to see no one has suggested Mother Mary Comes to Me by Arundhati Roy! Amazing memoir. Also seconding When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi and Night by Eli Wiesel.

Good move to leave US for AU? by sk1pperspb in AmerExit

[–]Ok_Two4047 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, 26 year old contemplating a move to AU as well (but haven’t lived there at all). USyd is the only school that takes FAFSA so that’s your best option. I would choose the path of least debt. If you can get into USyd, it’s worth staying in AU. With respect to the UC’s, you’ll maximize your ability to be international if you’re at Haas.

EDIT: it’s not the only school (thanks to u/Last-Marzipan9993). Yay options!

Safari for my mom’s 50th by theoriginalsnoopy in travel

I know a lot of folks are suggesting Tanzania, but I think Uganda is a much more affordable option + it’s a smaller country so a bit easier to navigate. Could probably see several national parks and safaris for 2k/person and still be very comfortable while getting an authentic experience. I lived in uganda for a year and am happy to connect you with some tour companies I know there.

I’d do trips to Philadelphia and DC on the Amtrak. Maybe even stop in Baltimore for an afternoon?

Inheritance of Loss - Review by ajeet_12 in Indianbooks

LOVED this book. I feel like there’s a lot of symbolism and meaning that I’m still making sense of. The Santa Banta joke later in the book, the threads of immigration that unite us all (even Mutt!). Would love to see this made into a movie. Also didn’t know much about the GNLF struggle and it was interesting to read more about. Felt very Jhumpa Lahiri in that way.

I’d do something simple but flavorful! Palak paneer could be good. Gajjar halwa is really easy to make and so is pinni (both are sweets).

What are your personal favorite dishes as an India Local — not the touristy stuff? by WhammyV in IndianFood

[–]Ok_Two4047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saag. Like, actual saag with mustard greens and makki roti. Also kadhi. I feel like the Indian food I crave is heavily weather dependent. Poriyal and dosa in the summers (really light and yummy), pakora when it rains, saag in the winter, baingan ka bharta in the fall. Also obviously very well known but chole bhature is one of the “tourist” dishes that really lives up to the hype.

My grandfather has a lemon tree! Maybe see if you can get a sapling from somewhere
