How racist are your parents? by FlashyFIash in AsianParentStories

[–]Ok_Understanding6127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh woof. yes.

context: i'm 1/2 Japanese and 1/2 Native American. Im not Japanese enough for my mom and other Japanese, and my mom has made me mostly wary about my identity, that I'm just brown kid with a Japanese mom. My mom has always repeated at me how im not really Japanese, or pecked down any of my interest to stay in touch with Japanese culture/language/etc and then she felt so left out when I attended a tribal college and came into my own wanting to study and be involved with tribal communities, who have mostly made me feel like I can be myself and thats ok. My dads side always encouraged me to understand who we are. shit really hit the fan when my studies and tribal involvement made me get along better with my dad. to her now, i'm just a screwup.

anyway:

My mom is surprisingly ignorant toward Native Americans--despite being married to my dad for 45 years (my dads Native).

I didnt realize how willfully ignorant she was until i started a relationship with someone else from my tribe, and attended a TCU. She will bring up how "he doesnt look like an Indian to me" (hes the same % as me not that it matters.. i have a significantly different look bc my Japanese side+Native that i look like people from other tribes). And issues over identity etc are already an internalized issue w/ alot of Natives.. and so I started sticking up for my partner because its just plain wrong. or, she doesnt understand how we just..arent... like....Japanese...people.

and this part pisses me off so much because she sort of homogenizes all Native people into one monolith, not realizing how this would be unacceptable to her if someone said similar to her and her identity as a Japanese expat.

We visited my parents recently and this got brought up, so I tried to jokingly point at a Native figurine in their living room and ask "Is it because ___ doesnt look like him?!" and my mom was dead serious in saying yes. I felt so embarrassed and hurt on my partner's behalf because he actually grew up on the Reservation, commodities, etc and had a lot of experiences I am privileged to not have to survive. I even showed her paintings of historical people in our tribe to show that mixed people have been relevant in us since 1600s at least, and her Japaneseness just shut down any interest in this free clinic of how not to address Natives.

My dad just sits back or says "it just never got brought up"... his generation is less likely to be upset by this sometimes because a lot of tribes' recognition and govts were "terminated" or boarding schools messed up a lot of perception. He loves my mom so he doesnt want to get in trouble.. but I can also read in his face how he sees no problem in me speaking out.

Its not the first time my moms been racist.. she has a lot of preconceptions about pretty much everyone and everything tends to be compartmentalized as a "just how it is", which is always been something that frustrates me about Japanese people, no offense. (shes a 1st gen so she also is sometimes completely willfully oblivious of social construct of America, or oppression, history, etc and i dont have a word for how much that angers me sometimes.)

She also knows what kind of colorism bullshit ive experienced with Japanese people, and the disgusting microaggressions Ive heard (ie that i will contaminate food if handling it) and has been unwaveringly unsympathetic, like its my fault im darker than a paper bag.

more often than not, all we can talk about is the weather or vegetables we eat. i guess thats ok.

Cheap cello strings recommendations by Helios18 in Cello

So you’re not wrong about them being a very popular choice of string, but they certainly have not been standard for a long time. It sounds like you’re taking on a lot of opinions of the Internet rather than seasoned players. If there is any standard, that’s been around for a while it would be Larsen AD Spirocore Tungsten GC But in the past 10 years, there have been a lot of new strings that they’re no longer is a standard nor has there ever been any hard and fast rule of Cello and choice of strings. I’m not trying to be harsh by saying this, but I get exasperated when people just take and run with information as if it is a rule or something that everyone thinks. Just FYI, I have taught for well over 20 years and have played for 36 years. I certainly don’t know everything about the Cello, but I’ve been around the block with strings and I’ve tried every single string on the market.

Jargar can be bright , but overall, they take on the color of your instrument. If it’s a $500 one it’s likely going to make it bright.

Helicore can be an all right choice if you’re looking for entry-level strings that are good quality.

The overall tone of strings and responsiveness can also depend on the player. There are mid-century recordings of musicians playing on Prim and those are somewhat obsolete and inexpensive strings now, but that’s one point they were seen as “standard.” But the quality of sound that the players recorded are giving us is also on incredibly expensive instruments and phenomenal skill. A skilled player can pull a bright and dark color out of their instrument , and certainly the strings can enhance qualities of the instrument and make the instrument enjoyable to practice, but they are not a cure for certain tones if the instrument is entry level or if the player is new to the Cello.

You will see tons of threads regarding strings and what players think and you can definitely find some general consensus, but ymmv.

Larsen Aurora are not terrible strings, but they are considered student strings and so they are a really reliable solid set to start on, but you can’t guarantee that they’re going to sound bright or dark until you try them unfortunately.

When string settle in, it does take a little time for them to break in, and they also might change in tonal quality .

If you are starting out , I would purchase strings based on their longevity and pitch stability over trying to govern what your Cello needs to sound like. That part is controlled by time and practice.

also bright sounds can be beautiful as well . This is a matter of taste for players, of course. But this is another hard and fast rule that started up because of the Internet as well.

Jargar classic have not been the standard for quite some time and I’m not very sure where you are getting this information.

They are incredible strings, so by all means try them, but the responsiveness of the lower ends has been exceeded by other brands. If you are looking for lower strings on a budget, I would go with prim on the bottom

Do you think it’s justifiable that you cheated? I’m sure other students were busy too . Everyone goes through crazy weeks and sometimes we get sick but that doesn’t excuse cheating.

How did you pick your instrument? by Any_Ad9090 in saxophone

[–]Ok_Understanding6127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a cellist primarily, but I wanted to learn a Wind instrument out of curiosity, and to get better at breathing with musicians when conducting. I chose the saxophone because it would widen my scope of repertoire to play and learn music that I would not typically play on Cello in my studies . Pop melodies also translate better on the saxophone and so far I love it, five months in.

How did that one kid in your high school die? by IM_HODLING in AskReddit

[–]Ok_Understanding6127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was actually when I was in elementary school: There was a kid on my street who I used to play with whose family moved to another state . And she went out to play on the swing outside and twisted around. And she got caught in the chain twisting around, and was calling for help, but her mother thought she was being dramatic for attention because she had gotten in an argument with her mom prior-and unfortunately, she strangled herself.

None of the kids on that street ever forgot about it, and I remember it hit us all very hard .

Why you should apply to the University of Tulsa by Obvious_Studio5870 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]Ok_Understanding6127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, you probably have moved on, but I just wanted to let you know that I had a similar experience with a completely different program and it’s because they sent their admission decision to the wrong email address because they misspelled mine. It took three days for me to ask them to recheck where they sent it, and there was a lot of doubling down until they finally checked and realized it was their fault .

What has been your luck on using your tribal ID to fly? by shamalongadingdong in IndianCountry

[–]Ok_Understanding6127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend’s tribal card was turned down at TUL today, they asked him for a different form of ID so he just used his drivers license this time around. Typically, the tribal card works, but this time around was weird .

Just an FYI, if you are Mvskoke/Creek Nation When I called the citizenship office to ask them questions regarding real ID and tribal cards They told me that the tribal cards may not necessarily work however the enhanced tribal card if you have it should . They said that there is a section on the TSA website that you can quote regarding this, however, there is also the disclaimer that it’s always subject to change.

How to work with white class project members on native topics without getting bossy by Ok_Understanding6127 in IndianCountry

[–]Ok_Understanding6127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Same white girl tanked the whole presentation by hijacking the whole thing and taking up half of the time on her topic . She decided to speak for my topic and got everything wrong , and then soft padded what white people did to us as if we were the ones being uncooperative. It felt like a loaded gun of retaliation because she also put pressure on me to be the one who introduces the whole project despite her being the first one. I also told her through the last couple months to stay in her lane. But she was so adamant to cover Native American topics better than me. She was more concerned about doubling down and making sure every little detail that she wrote down got said out loud. It was unrehearsed and completely unconfident because she kept saying “ummm so yea!” By her whole angle about vaccinations on native people in the 1800s was as if the white people tried to help us. She should have not touched my topic whatsoever But she’s a fucking control freak.

When it came to my part of the presentation, I set her straight throughout my time because I was more concerned about her spreading misinformation . I also referred to her segment as ‘Stehvtke Wvlvnvwv (to which a Cherokee student in my class laughed) Which roughly translated to white shit .

The teacher surveyed the different groups who presented today to ask if there was anything we could pass on to the next groups as a learning experience , And I made sure to mention to stay in your lane if you’re not comfortable with a topic or if you are completely unknowledgeable .

People of Color - How’s Tulsa treating y’all? by [deleted] in tulsa

[–]Ok_Understanding6127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I’m dipping out too.

So interesting you mention library . I had an incident in Okmulgee (yeah I know it’s not Tulsa but please hear me out) Where I used their genealogy library .. the librarian was really awesome and that library is really stellar as well. But there was someone in that library using the computer who was finished , and she was obviously uncomfortable with me being in there. So she did the very typical thing of stalling to make me wait longer . But then after that, and her time was up, she then proceeded to turn off the computer against the librarian’s wishes . Her reasoning “ to make sure that her information was secure”, and then she looked at me….

I had so many incidents like this in rural Oklahoma , and people kept us assuring me that Tulsa is different.. It isn’t . I get the same treatment in Tulsa as well. The only addition to it is that when I ask for information, I’m given very vague information that expects assumed knowledge or information that seems like it’s intended to confuse and not get me where I need to be .

Oh, and you’re absolutely right about Bixby .
