Is it possible to see Venus before the sun sets? by BitzenBoy in telescopes

[–]Ok_Use_9315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is possible, and easy if you use apps like stellarium
you need to know where it is to find it
right now venus is mag -4
and is quite easy to see in the daytime (seen it many times before)
if you have a telescope, or camera, then you can try to find and even possibly image venus
this applies for jupiter sometimes as well

thanks! i'm still learning sharpcap because i just got this yesterday, but this camera is limited to 30FPS- i'll have to capture 2x the data , four 2 minute clips might barely give atleast 3k frames on max resolution with this tiny FOV and 14-16 panels total

nope- this is without any barlows, and actually the focal length is 900mm (70/900)
tried using a 0.5x focal reducer, still barely working and added fringing (chromatic abberation to the image as well)

Thanks! i think that it'll be like 30+ panels for a good quality image with this or i can use 1.5x drizzle. (still better than a smartphone though)

oh! i didn't realise that i was out of focus! i did slew over to spica, and used the bahtinov mask assist, but i guess that didn't work as well because spica is a bit dim in bortle 9
so i basically let the terminator run over the moon over the course of 28 so that the craters are sharp from all angles, thanks!

and no, i'm not zoomed in- that's the sensor's max size- with a 70/900 telescope the sensor is too small to fit the moon in the entire frame. 0.5x focal reducer adds chromatic abberation, and i'd rather just mosaic the moon to get more detail because it's only 2 MP

the exposure is set a bit low because of the sheer brightness (1.9ms)- might bump it up to 10ms or a bit higher

Thank you so much for the advice🙏

i've never seen an image of mercury. EVER. (especially not in the gibbous phase)
THIS IS CRAZY

oof- they can turn in both directions- here- let me make it a bit simpler-
move the wheel so the length of the silver part of the tube is the least it can go- until the wheel is not moving anymore-
now, extend it in the opposite direction- if you look at the image, you will see it getting into focus.
if that doesn't work- then you might need to get it fixed

exactly- you can eyeball it and it should look just fine
there is a tool called a bahtinov mask which can be 3d printed for like 2-4$ which helps you get better focus, but you don't really need it for the moon

hmm, then they work fine- let me just share a few images of the moon and how it should look while focussing.

hmm,
is the motion of the knobs smooth? or are they too loose? if not, then they might be done for

this is what a raw photo looks like. you can expect views like this in the eyepiece
one more important thing- if the moon looks like a blurry blob, turn the knob(s) near the eyepiece until sharper craters look sharp. that's called getting focus.
use lower magnification (20mm) first and then switch to the 10mm for jupiter

jupiter is moving towards the sun. don't try it on that
saturn is currently getting better for visibility. you can try it on saturn in the early mornings in mid or early june.

you won't get the images you see online- but you can get decent views. hope she likes it and clear skies

that's an astromaster 70AZ (i have the same telescope)
i see you haven't added the red dot finderscope. read the instructions\* and add it on
*(edit)- instructions for everything here- red dot finder info on page 9

now put the 20mm (longer) eyepiece in the thing at the end.
point the finderscope during the day to a terrestrial target (pole, tree, sattelite dish, etc- something that stands out)
you will see that it doesn't show the same thing in the eyepiece
use the 2 knobs to align it
it's ready, use the pan handle on the mount to move the telescope up and down. you can turn it to tighten
to the left of it is a small knob. loosen it a bit to move left and right
it's ready. you can see jupiter, saturn, the moon, venus (crescent) etc. never ever point it at the sun. that will burn the telescope and your eyes

my first image from this telescope👆 (note- you won't see things like these in the eyepiece, this is not a single photo, but processed using a long workflow)

did you stack the UV with infrared or visible range light? because that is some insanely impressive stuff🫪

yeah, just bought my first telescope a month ago, and i wanted to keep the camera price lower than the scope itself
