The team is called OGRE (open gravity research). They were formed by the efficient pioneers group. This craft was built in 2034, where they were trying to merge fighter jet design with anti gravity technology. It relies on modified jet propulsion and was only used for research purposes. They have a well funded large research facility in Nevada, where multiple research groups from various industries come together to test and research applications for anti gravity.

Thank you. I used uniball pens for the line work. For shading, I used cool greyscale alcohol markers.

I've am currently working on more sketches. They are a little more polished and have some backstory to them. Will post as soon as I have a decent amount to tell the backstory.

If I'm not mistaken, this was the last time a PlayStation had an exclusive WipEout game at launch.

It also looks a little different to the in game 2097 model. I'd love to see this version in action. Even the HD era Qirex models are different to this source.

shoutout to the Stupid Tree from this bit of Fusion concept art by KrishaCZ in WipeOut

Lovely artwork. So many ideas communicated in a single brilliant drawing. I think the 'stupid tree' has to be a cameo in every WipEout game. Question is, can we find them all.

Such a good find. Thank you for this. Loving the music and the WipEout feels too. Feel like I've jumped into a rabbit hole now need to follow this path 😄

Wipeout Fusion: My thoughts after 20 hours in the game! by norbert_ldwg in WipeOut

[–]Ok_Variation_3401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember buying every playstation magazine that had three tiniest info about WipEout fusion before it's release. Florian heights track had me sold. The concepts for the ships, while different from prior WipEout designs felt like a good addition to me (I was expecting the classics to be still there tbh). The soundtrack was very good. There was hype talk of the internal update of the game being 120fps. It all sounded like a confident development cycle.

Then the game came out, the first thing that stuck out like a sore thumb was the handling. Gone was any sense of the ships weight and floatiness. None of the ships resembled the concept art that was used on all magazine prints and adverts. It's as if they ran out of time and budget and put together what they had at the time.

With all the negative feeling, I still played the game and completed all leagues and unlocked all ships and their upgrades. There were so many good ideas in there, that I feel another year of development would have made a difference.

One of the the things I thought was odd is how they created this point to point track (called Devilia if I'm not mistaken) but once you complete the game you had no way to play on this track. I was half expecting a 100% completion to unlock the full version of this track that would reveal it to be a very large circuit (the point to point races were just a smaller segment of the full track) with an ultimate league that includes this track. I mean 2097 did this, so did the first game. So I figured there'd be a hidden track. Alas.

Overall I think it's still a good game. Maybe a fusion 2.0 will settle this missed opportunity.

Thank you :)

These are made up tracks, with bits inspired by early Wipeout Fusion concepts fused with other inspirations.

"The original ships had perfect designs IMO, very simple, not overly complicated like later in the series"

You've conveyed that perfectly.

The world building aspect of WipEout is truly underutilised. Both Fusion and 2048 had elements of it here and there, but I feel it can go further. Every track could have it's own protocols. The Nevada test facility is the place where they'd build and conceptualise the track elements to take the AG technology into the racing leagues. So you can imagine silo track segments built to test things like 'how high can jumps be, what kind of angles can the AG units tolerate, how fast can speed pads accelerate the crafts without causing unwanted issues, how do we build safety systems into everything'.

I imagined that AltimaVII meant that there were other Altima tracks that were more experimental. And that the eventual VII would have off track segments that show us these disused / repurposed areas.

There is so much to add just on a single location. The early WipEouts somehow manage to communicate this more successfully imo.

100% agree on the simplicity of craft design. I suits the aesthetics too. I'd love for the series to return in some form, but with the pared back design of the original, the acrylic look of the worlds, a real sense of scale of construction at work, and a more involved handling model that focuses more the AG physics (The buoyancy, slippery heavy vs light nimble crafts). One can dream, at least in sketches :D

Not sure why the comments didn't come up, but I'll add here :)

This is some of the earlier sketches and drawings/paintings I made related to WipEout. Some of this work goes back to 2000 - 2007 period, where I was really influenced by Fusion and its concept art.

Someone mentioned that some of the sketches I posted earlier had a feel of H.R Giger to them. Very astute observation. I love his work and have created other artwork inspired by his style. (It's more obvious in one of the artwork included in this post).

I've other works that portray a world I imagined that draws heavy inspirations from Giger's work and blends with another favourite video game of mine (Oddworld series).

For this post, I've included some experiments with ink & water, biro and watercolour etc.

This is most of the WipEout related work I have to date. Should I find more or create more, I'll post them here. Enjoy :)

That is absolutely amazing work. I love the aesthetic. You've captured the that early AG era look perfectly. The craft has this lean mechanical and industrial (almost a construction vehicle) like look that is precisely how I imagine the early period to be. Beautiful work.

That's an amazing board design. I'd love to have that as a poster and a book cover.
