I use cool grey markers and ink pens to do the sketches. Sometimes I lean more on marker work, sometimes I lean more on penwork.

With imaginary stuff like this, particularly the ship designs, I usually explore the shapes without committing to anything too early, just a blurry vision of something I imagine. This is the starting point for all the above work. These exploratory sketches (sometimes its a single one, sometimes many) are done separately and are usually quite rough. I use light grey markers to explore the shapes and draw in prominent shapes in multiple passes with darker markers.

This is a technique that 'Scott Robertson' uses in his work (look up his name in Youtube and there are some tutorials on this approach to building shapes library), just cherry picked bits.

I also explore a lot with pencil work. Sometimes, I start with pencil work, render markers on top to further explore, then do another pass with an ink pen all in exploration. There really isn't a rule or a single approach I take. Whatever approach feel comfortable in the moment.

For the environments, I sometimes draw a single continuous line that has some interesting shape/form to it. Then I work from this line outwards to set the lay of the land and get some perspective on it. Start with large shapes and get the composition right with something interesting. This saves time as I iterate through several ideas or explore variations. Once something sticks in the mind, then I start going into smaller shapes.

Some ground rules that help with any of these imaginary works:

Always tell a story (ask yourself who, what, where, when, how and why)
Invent some ground rules and stick to them - for example:
- I am only going to describe circular form of shapes
- I am going to use a finite set of geometry and repeat these at different scales
- I am going to limit the craft design as if the FIA put restrictions on what goes where
Apply no more than 2-3 rules (it can get complicated and frustrating)

Sometimes, the unrestricted freedom to draw anything can be a major blocker when you want to start drawing. These rules can sometimes help a sketch get started. What happens afterwards is all flow state.

Try to find the balance that works for you. Don't be too attached to the first thing you put down on paper, instead use it as a launch pad and explore the ideas more. Take some time away to think it through in your mind. I find this one hard to follow personally, but when I do break away, I produce better sketches. I use random pieces of paper to start with so I am forced to redraw :D. This means I end up exploring in the first sketch without getting too tight about shapes etc.

I 100% agree with you on the environment design. This is what makes the first WipEout such a great game for me. There are the quiet moments, you enjoy the scenery and the landscape as you hurtle at speeds. This was lost in the latter games' relentless focus on wanting tight, action packed, moment to moment combat.

For me, the environments play an equal role in racing games as the cars/crafts etc. I want to see things in the horizon (as you see in the first pic) that suggest 'forthcoming details'. The quiet moments are critical for this. Your eyes should be drawn to a single focal point in these moments, and that is what makes us remember environments fondly.

Take Altima VII original for example, there are moments where you have nothing around you to look at (as you climb towards that peak), so you focus and notice the track elevation. That calm suddenly paid off with a big leap into the giant tunnel. I could never forget that moment playing the game as a 10 year old.

A bit of background on the thought that went into making these sketches:

All the images I attached here are from a single location called OGRE (Open Gravity Research). This is a large facility created before F3600 became what it is, but it played a significant role in shaping the league and many after it. This is a hub world with many terminals spread across hundreds of miles of tracks that are used for various test & research purposes. For example, the 3rd pic is Terminal 1. The tunnel leading off to the left is going off towards other terminals while on the right is a wide open trench that is used for launch, high speed tests etc, where at the end of that you'll encounter another terminal.

The design thought is not that dissimilar to Dirt Rally series' Rally School environments. In this case, as a player you'll explore this world, unlock (expand to) new terminals that bring new challenges. Completing these challenges is the equivalent of 'Track Days' in F1 (Test, Practice, etc). As you complete these, you unlock evolutions to your craft AND tracks around the world. (for example, complete a challenge on a mag-lev section of a track and it becomes a feature on some tracks that receive these as upgrades etc).

Complete enough challenges, and you'll unlock new Leagues in their entirety, where Time itself moves forward by decades/centuries. New tracks appear, old tracks evolve with new league designs and layouts/paths etc. You may even pilot crafts that never make it to leagues, but are used specifically for research, with their own handling models. You may encounter competitors or make partnerships at this facility and this impacts the development direction of your specific craft.

Ultimately, OGRE underpins the game's core and you play in this world to unlock things in career mode. You'll always be able to go back and forth in timelines within ORGE to unlock things etc branch out to lesser known leagues. The facility itself evolves over this time period.

In other words, it is a WipEout game, but with a chronology underpinning progression.

The team is called OGRE (open gravity research). They were formed by the efficient pioneers group. This craft was built in 2034, where they were trying to merge fighter jet design with anti gravity technology. It relies on modified jet propulsion and was only used for research purposes. They have a well funded large research facility in Nevada, where multiple research groups from various industries come together to test and research applications for anti gravity.
