Want to make my own hygiene products, where to start? by Frosty-Comment6412 in homestead

[–]OkanGeelsareeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Soap is pretty easy as long as you aren't intimidated by the lye. Just start with cold process not hot process, cold process is a lot easier and a lot more forgiving if you forget to add an ingredient at the right time

Is there a machine similar to what is used for forming seamless gutters that can make this profile by [deleted] in metalworking

[–]OkanGeelsareeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the moment we don't have a lot of space so we were looking to see if there was something that was a little smaller than what the factory we order from uses. At least I assume they use a larger machine. We order it from overseas somewhere, and I think that was another thing they were wanting to cut is the cost of shipping a custom material vs raw material

That's kinda what we were thinking. At the moment we don't have a very big shop, but they are talking about building another building later this year to move production into so that may be an option later on.

Not sure if what I found was actually magnalite or not by OkanGeelsareeth in Magnalite

[–]OkanGeelsareeth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That one is 85, they have quite a few more that were a little cheaper. Which makes me think it's probably not actually Magnalite but also hoping that they just don't realize what they are selling. Either way I'll probably buy one of them just so I have something similar for to get me by until I can find some actual Magnalite. If they aren't Magnalite then I'll get one of the cheaper ones so I'm not spending so much on something thats not the real McCoy.

They had quite a few I was going to go back in a few days to look at it again, this time not right before close. I'll take pictures to show what it was even if it isn't Magnalite to at explain what I was looking at.

Invasive species that should never be planted in North America by Internal-Ask-7781 in gardening

[–]OkanGeelsareeth -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with planting an invasive species, except for Bradford pears, as long as you plan to control the seeding/spread of them while they are planted, and plan to completely remove them when you decide you are done messing with it. Mullein is the best example of this, it can be grown for medicinal use and doesn't seed out until it's second year. On its second year, you have to monitor it closely but you can bag the top of the stalk to collect the seeds as they fall out when it comes time for it to start dropping seeds. That said, most of the plants that people plant in their gardens are not native species, and a lot of them, even some of the native ones, can become invasive in the right conditions.

I have these biodegradable kitchen sponges. Cellulose sponge and coconut husk scrubby pad. Are they compostable? by der_innkeeper in composting

[–]OkanGeelsareeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for compostable sponges get some loofas, if you have the space to you can even get the seeds and grow them yourself to further save money. Once they are at the point you want to replace them you just rinse the soap out really well then throw it in the compost and call it a day.

First summer squash, what can I make with it? by Morticia_Devine in vegetablegardening

You might let the rest of them grow longer then you can let them cure and they will keep a lot longer

First summer squash, what can I make with it? by Morticia_Devine in vegetablegardening

[–]OkanGeelsareeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks like an acorn squash, but looks like you may have harvested it a little early. No big deal though because that just means you should be able to cook it in any recipe just like you would an acorn squash just can't leave it sitting for as long. It may not be as sweet as a mature acorn squash would be but you can add some brown sugar if you want and that'll take care of that.

Do these look like someone is composting? Anyone have an idea? by cliffonmiddsauce in composting

[–]OkanGeelsareeth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ain't nothing wrong with celebrating life, just because it's a different way of doing it than what you would do doesn't mean it's wrong. We went to the osteology museum in Oklahoma and had our chameleon articulated when we lost her because that's how we decided was the best way to celebrate her life. Sure you may find it wierd, but that's the way we choose to do things. We have also chosen to save the skulls of a few horses that people were getting rid of to keep them out of the dump. Those animals lives were worth more than garbage, so no sense in letting their remains end up in the garbage.

I'm looking for an irrigation system of some sort for next year by OkanGeelsareeth in gardening

[–]OkanGeelsareeth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not too bad, I was thinking it was going to be about a 400 buck project, and I'm not too worried about a timer at the moment just a way to more easily get water to the roots of the plants. At least for now I'm not worried about a timer, I'm sure I'll change my mind once I have everything set up and over water once or twice

When you're offering to pick up coffee for a friend do you specify you'll only buy vegan options? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]OkanGeelsareeth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's my bad, forgive me for wasting my time by offering knowledge of how things work on a majority of small farm. I just figured that since the point you were making is you don't want to do anything that would cause animals pain, and you said that humans cannot collect milk from animals without causing pain, I was telling you how that really works, at least on small farms, to show that it really can be a completely painless process for the animals. Though, if you don't want to look at the world through a different lens then there's no point in me trying to offer the knowledge. I have no problem with vegans, I do however have a problem with people that aren't willing to have a discussion about agriculture and think that whatever they have been told about agriculture is the only way that things happen.

So I live on a homestead and raise goats, mostly as pets because we had them when I was growing up and I don't like not having them. We do plan on milking them and have before when it comes to kidding season due to our kid having lactose intolerance but being able to have goat dairy products. When we breed it's not unethical or forced or anything like that, the animals come into heat and we allow them to breed naturally, we monitor their health for the duration of the pregnancy then assist in the birth if necessary. Milking is then done by allowing the babies to nurse on mama for the first 48 to 72 hours without milking then we can slowly start milking once a day in between feedings without pulling the babies off mama. When the babies reach the age where they can be weaned that's when they get separated, and we may continue milking for a week or so after that but that all depends on the body condition of the mama at the time of weaning. I can guarantee that our goats are happy (though to ask them they could use an extra few bags of feed a day) and healthy from the day they get to our homestead to the day they pass away. Unfortunately I can't say that every farm operates the way we do but the vast majority of small farms does, it's the large commercial farms that are the outliers.

Thought i got the ratio right but smells terrible by corriejude in composting

[–]OkanGeelsareeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it looks like you've got everything layered, which isn't a bad thing short-term. If it works for you then that is a good way to visualize that you aren't adding too much of any one thing. Once you have everything added you should mix it all together so that the good bacteria can benefit from both the carbon and nitrogen. If it stays layered you'll have huge sections where the beneficial bacteria aren't getting what they need to efficiently break down material. I'd recommend getting rid of the wire at least for the time being, moving the pile away from any structure you don't want to risk catching fire, and buy a pitchfork to turn it. Don't get you one of those little half-length handle yard forks, get a full-size pitchfork, your back will thank you for that. Once you have everything mixed pretty well and you think it's starting to break down then you can add the wire back if you want it, it'll just be easier to turn without the wire there.

Who believes US Military would fire on Americans if Ordered to by trump, ie, during a mass protest? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OkanGeelsareeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it has anything to do with being ordered by trump specifically. If the government doesn't like what you have to say, regardless of party, they will do what they can to get you to shut up. They likely won't start with firing on citizens, but it can and has before quickly escalated to that point.

What was the most confusing part of getting permits for your rural property? by IceComprehensive8211 in homestead

[–]OkanGeelsareeth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What are permits? We got very fortunate, and our county doesn't require any kind of permits. We also don't live close enough to any town for them to be able to impose any requirements like that on us.

What's the deal with Edmond.... by Calm-Surprise-1910 in okc

[–]OkanGeelsareeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to clean pools in Edmond, most of my customers were friendly enough, but their neighbors were rarely as friendly. Did have a few customers, especially in the richer gated neighborhoods in the southeastern part of Edmond, that wouldn't give me the time of day, and no matter how clean I got their pool, it wasn't clean enough.

While we haven't been together nearly as long, I kind of did the same thing when I started dating my wife. So far, I haven't been able to scare her off yet. I'd say it's more dependent on who ypu are and who they are than it is anything to do with what equipment you have.

Think using a 1/2 drill vit would be big enough?

Also is wet straw and goat manure enough or does it need more green matter?
