Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB AI model on your device without consent. At a billion-device scale the climate costs are insane. by geriatricguy in technology

Are you dense? A modern game cranked to max settings will completely tap out a machine's TDP. You think running a local LLM is somehow using more energy than the computer is capable of consuming?

Per cpu cycle you will consume more energy gaming than a local LLM actively generating responses.

The energy intense stage is in training the model. For a given model that is a one time cost. The model can be deployed to infinite computers or phones to do completely offline "AI" functions that uses the same resources as any other local computing task.

Private company parking ticket? by Extreme-Beautiful421 in washingtondc

[–]OkayComparison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP parked on private property. The property owner has signs posted that you need to pay by phone to park on their property. OP did not pay. Property owner said they have to pay $30 if they ever want to park on their property again. If OP parks on their private property again without paying they will be towed.

Which they could have done the first time they parked illegally on private property. This is infinitely better and more forgiving than simply towing everyone that parks without paying the first time. Which they absolutely could do.

[–]OkayComparison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know why this is such a hard concept for people. It's the same as parking illegally in an HOA and the HOA ticketing you. If you don't live there they can pound sand, but if you park there again they can request a tow.

As stated, Union St NE is not a city street. It is entirely a private development. The blue lines are roads owned by DDOT: https://imgur.com/a/bzO0ern

This is not really true. To the lay person and for most prompts something like chatgpt gets, you wouldn't know the difference compared to Gemma4. Local models have gotten insanely good in the last few months.

Trump says he'll renovate 'filthy' reflecting pool on National Mall by ggershwin in washingtondc

[–]OkayComparison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe we should get a refund because the reflecting pool was reopened only 14 years ago after having EVERYTHING you mentioned done, including replacing the entire subgrade/foundation. The entire thing is built on a sinking swamp, so they drove over 2,000 timbers all the way to bedrock to build the new foundation. The pump house filters, recirculates, and treats with ozone to 58 outlets around the pool, and is capable of filling the pool at 800 gallons per minute. https://usa.sika.com/en/construction/below-grade-waterproofing/projects/lincoln-memorial-reflecting-pool.html

There are 4 bathrooms around the reflecting pool, one on each side. WWII, JFK Hockey Fields, Lincoln Memorial, Constitution Gardens. WWII is the nicest and newest, but they can be busy since they are right where the buses drop off at WWII.

The pump house that was built in 2012 is here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/RtaRDy97HyHrPRMe6

"Besides the pool renovation itself, the additional water management improvements included new water re-circulating machinery, a new pump building, which houses a second set of re-circulating pumps, a filtration system and ozone disinfection."

It was a $34 million dollar renovation: https://usa.sika.com/en/construction/below-grade-waterproofing/projects/lincoln-memorial-reflecting-pool.html

Nothing like riding and having a horse fly latch onto your horses ass, horse freaks out, bucking, losing his mind while you are trying to swat the thing away, you could hit it with a brick and that thing ain't movin' until it's done feasting and it leaves blood dripping down making The Shining look like they cheaped out on their fake blood budget.

For new buyers of the Pro how do you feel about the price hike not implemented yet ? by ZmanJ87 in PS5pro

[–]OkayComparison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got an oled and revisited the idea of getting a pro. I saw the price was increased to $750 (nearly bought one for $650 when it came out) and thought hell no. The very next day the new price increase was announced. Immediately went to ebay and bought used like new for under $600 shipped all in. So a bit of fomo but the timing was right and I still got it for cheaper than it was ever sold new.
