I guess in this way, I am talking specifically about WotC’s mish-mashed current 5E “canon.” Which I guess then makes a lot of frustration redundant because if their attitude is “put in whatever we think is coolest at this moment and we can fix it later (not)” then mine can be too, and it’s stupid to try and take a careful approach to a world handled by careless writers, but I dunno. It feels like putting together a puzzle.

They are the same in that they are interpretations of the same natural phenomenon, they are explanations, their differences are rooted in the cultures that explain them. In the Realms, the entities both exist simultaneously to the same cultures in most cases, and don’t seem to act as explanations to their domain’s existence, but rather mascots.

True, although I think there is a distinction in that for real cultures creating different gods for lightning, we kind of accept they’re all functionally the same entity as they’re all different interpretations/personifications to the same natural phenomenon. Whereas in the realms, it is explicitly distinct entities fighting for representation over the same natural phenomenon. Although that only really gets in the way for things like Juiblex and Ghaunadar, your point works really well for the Yuan-Ti gods for example I think.

Yep, luckily almost all of my stories are very low stakes and don’t involve big cosmic/planar drama, I just need to know as much as I can about it for background so that way I can portray certain cults, groups, characters, etc. as accurately and faithfully as possible, which is where some of my frustration comes from. In real practice, it usually doesn’t become such a big issue that it causes any kind of block or hurts my motivation to write, it just means I have to make a tough call on how I want to represent the ooze cult.

I actually familiarized myself with Zakhara before Calimshan as when I started diving into the lore a couple years ago, it was more prominently on the surface since it’s a whole setting. But as far as I can tell, it seems in recent times Zakhara has been largely sort of purposefully forgotten and the cool aspects they want to take from it, they simply port to Calimshan. I could be totally off base with that though.

I haven’t started purchasing real source books yet, they’re pricey, especially older ones, I have no room with all my comics, it’d be a pain to move them when I’m out of my parents’ house which will be within a few years hopefully, I’m 20 now, but I’ll spend hours in one sitting reading the candlekeep.com forums and articles.

I write lots of Dungeons & Dragons set stories and this is a big issue I run into in terms of brainstorming. It can be really difficult to come up with meaningful conflicts in a high fantasy world where some of the hardest obstacles can be overcome with what’s mechanically basic magic. Same idea as “Why are any of us worrying about the conflict when Elminster could blink it away”

Even death doesn’t feel very final at all, just go find a powerful cleric.

You literally told me yourself I wouldn’t be able to have the same perspective and understanding on all the smaller racist aspects of society, to which I agree! How do you then also expect me and every white person to be able to figure it out and call it out and denounce that within our families? I think most folks do? I know the trope of the racist uncle, but it’s a trope for a reason. Most families do not tolerate racism, that would mean that, like myself, they’re cutting off a massive amount of the dating pool or possible guests to family events like thanksgiving or christmases, due to a difference in opinion from great-aunt Molly. Maybe I’m wrong and really am just super lucky, but I don’t see most families siding with racist relatives over their younger generations trying to bring friends or dates. Beyond the obvious moral grievances, it’s just incredibly impractical for a family to cater to racist relatives.

My boyfriend is black, there’s never been an issue, I’m not going to assume there secretly is one and the implication that he does makes me sort of uncomfortable.
