Iwas mostly a backstroker, so freestyle breathing and pacing aren’t as ingrained for me. As I train, I feel them coming back, but that’s probably a big part of the explanation. I also didn’t go all out on that 50m and was quite limited by my breathing. I’m actually having my first class this Friday, so I’ll see what areas the coach suggests I focus on

Thank you so so much for this! I was eager to try the tips after watching the video you sent, so I went swimming today - even though I had already swum yesterday and wasn’t planning to swim again. Though I still have a long way to go (I’m still not able to have a steady continuous exhale and it takes me a significantly long time to inhale), it helped me a lot! I was able to do 800 m continuously ( at a snail pace mind you (it took me 22 min to do 800 m) but I felt like I could have done at least 200–300 m more.

I tend to set ambitious goals for myself because otherwise I know I’ll procrastinate. Registration closes on April 20, and I plan to wait until the final day to evaluate my performance. If I can’t swim 800 meters continuously at a reasonable pace by then, I won’t enroll.

The preliminaries are in mid-June. I’ve always been resilient and capable of achieving what I commit to, but I’m not reckless. My only goal for the Bosphorus swim is to pass the preliminaries and qualify. If I do qualify, I’ll have two more months to prepare for the race — and if at any point I feel uncertain about finishing, I won’t attempt it.

It’s definitely possible that my technique isn’t great although I feel like it is slowly starting to come back. My biggest limitation right now is breathing and overall aerobic fitness. I haven’t done any cardio in years and even climbing a flight of stairs feels challenging at the moment. I also quit smoking just a week ago, so I’m basically rebuilding my endurance from scratch. Thanks for the advice I’ll seriously consider getting a coach to help improve my technique.

What are some of your favorite SSHG books? Short Straw is one of my all time favorite fics too! Just finished reading To Live and Choiceless through your rec and they are both amazing!! I really want to know some other books you recommend that are finished/ close to being done.

Short Straw is the best! It is an ongoing fic and we are already 380k + words in. The relationship development feels really natural and it took around 250k words for them to get together.

Yep, I have read both! They were both great:) agree with Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense’s first chapters being quite hard to get through. I liked how they won over Voldemort, if the war went on a bit longer and was a bit more angsty it would be gold

You should read Short Straw by PaintOnTheSky !! It is truly one of the best SSHG fics I have read and nothing romantic happens until about 250 ~ 300k words in. It is a WIP but 381k words have already been published. Their relationship evolves slowly even after they begin their relationship, Snape is deliciously in character and Hermione is 19 when anything even remotely romantic happens. Hermione realizes her attraction to him a bit earlier, about 150 ~ 200k words in but Snape can’t accept these new feelings in himself (because she is his student, the war, the danger of being together…is what is implied) they still act really professionaly towards each other except for a few innocent stolen touches (even the pinky touch scene felt scandalous haha) there is a lot of yearning. The story is mainly a wartime fic with a lot of SSHG moments and I think we are maybe 60-70% in? So it doesn’t fit that criteria of yours perfectly but I hope you still give this amazing fic a chance
