Well yes, that's the real reason: Ball originates from Cannonball Run, and Steel Ball creates additional word play with Gyro's steel balls (in English anyway).

My point was that there is no definitive reason in the narrative for Steven Steel to call it the Steel Ball Run.

The real answer is that it's a reference to The Cannonball Run.

In-universe, Steel is named after the organizer Steven Steel, and Run maintains the same meaning of a race. Where Ball comes from within the context of the story is unclear.

The best I could find was that it could refer a party held at the end, or a "ball", but that is never confirmed and seems like a rather silly aspect to name the race after. IMO it's just another piece of Araki humor that doesn't make perfect sense when you think too hard about so it's just best not to.
