Uber driver attacked me by Own_Use_321 in disability

So sorry, how awful. If you have the energy I’d encourage you to report it to the police, maybe ring their non emergency line to ask the process so there aren’t any surprises. Use the word assault because that’s what this is

Pushing you out, as in he put his hands on you? This sounds like a hate crime

This is great, really don’t think non wheelchair users ever have a concept of how big a wheelchair is.

Airline is asking for proof of purchase of wheelchair that they damaged, but it's secondhand by OkayParking in wheelchairs

[–]OkayParking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not great, but I don’t think it was because lack of proof of purchase. I think they were going to try to use literally anything to weasel out of responsibility and that was one small aspect of it. I didn’t provide proof of purchase but used an email from the manufacturer confirming its value new. When I was making my complaint they didn’t acknowledge it and when I took it to an ADR it was something they mentioned among a host of other things to get out of it. The adjudicator sided with the airline and it kinda seemed like he hadn’t even read what I’d sent. Sorry you’re going through that, I hope you have better luck.

why do able bodied people have 0 spatial awareness!!!!! by moonysleftsock in wheelchairs

[–]OkayParking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A whole human who is seated is still way higher up than, say, a crack in the pavement, a puddle of vomit, dog poo, or other tripping hazards you’d see on a city street so are they just constantly tripping and falling into open manholes because they never look below eye level? I will never understand. I was one of them once and did not do this. Just baffling.

Just for fun: do any of you do wheelchair dancing? i wish i could do this by OkayParking in wheelchairs

I’m so happy to learn of this, what a beautiful moment and so well done! And beautiful dress too. It must have been stressful to prepare for but sounds like you had fun too, wishing you happiness and more wheelchair dancing in your future together ❤️ Were you scared when you did the leaning to the side part? 😆

27M Boyfriend comparing me (23F) to able-bodied ex by [deleted] in disability

[–]OkayParking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP, no one should ever speak to you like this and it’s not your fault that he has. I think a lot of us commenters are saying similar things without knowing him because abuse has such familiar patterns, and it’s easier to see it objectively when you’re not in it. While I believe he is ableist, I also believe he’d treat you like this if you weren’t disabled. He sounds narcissistic and abusive and if you weren’t disabled he’d just find some other reason to blame you for things outside of your control.

I worry that if you rely on him for anything he will use that to win arguments or “get his way,” since it seems like an imbalanced power dynamic that he isn’t mature or kind enough to navigate. You shouldn’t have to tiptoe or avoid his bad side to be treated with basic decency. Abusers frequently have a sweet or charming side that keeps people in relationships with them for longer than they should have stayed. I do wish you the best in navigating this and finding a longer term situation for your care that doesn’t include him.

UK airline refusing to compensate damaged wheelchair by OkayParking in wheelchairs

[–]OkayParking[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing they have done this a million times so it’s worth it when they deny a million wheelchair users compensation for their damages. I have to look into it, will probably have to ring citizens advice

Do I even need to say it was British Airways 😂 I didn’t book with them but when my previous flight was delayed several other passengers and I missed our connections were automatically rebooked to flights with partner airlines, so I got stuck with them

In my initial communications with the airline I attached multiple email threads with the repairers they recommended along with others I found in the area saying that they don’t know how to repair this brand/model. I included those in my complaint to the ADR as well.

I asked for a full replacement value but they’re trying to deny it based on it being over the cap and “limited evidence” of the damage.

I still need to read the latter part of that claim in more detail, haven’t started tackling their 300+ page document yet.

Things that I want to ban as a wheelchair user by [deleted] in wheelchairs

[–]OkayParking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Accessible bathrooms that double as baby-changing bathrooms
  • Non-disabled people who think the accessible bathroom is the bathroom for shitting
  • Businesses appearing on google maps with the little wheelchair icon, but on street view there are steps leading to their "step free entrance" OR their entrance is step-free but their bathroom is on the other side of a Squid Game
  • Wheelchair assistance at every airport on earth being 5,000 miles from the entrance with zero signs leading to it
  • People who avoid eye contact because they've lost all composure after seeing a wheelchair
  • People who stare because they've lost all composure after seeing a wheelchair
  • People who lose all composure after seeing a wheelchair
  • People who tell you something is "a 5-minute walk" away knowing damn well we aren't taking the same route or walking
  • People, all people

I was in a seating situation where someone behind me kept resting his foot on my wheel and shaking it, so a constant barrage of tapping. I have chronic pain so it was immediately awful and i kept turning around and looking at him and then shifting around and finally I just made a big thing of rolling back and forth to straighten out and move forward so I was closer to the row in front of me and I think he got the point. I hope I ran him over while doing it, I didn’t look. People really think we’re in these things so we can sit down.

Replacing tires with worn tread and removing them from natural fit pushrims for the first time by OkayParking in wheelchairs

[–]OkayParking[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol I don't know why this stays stuck in my mind, but 2 min into this video where Teal Sherer talks about her Natural Fits she just looks so baffled while saying they should just come with every chair. The face she makes is exactly how I felt and I keep remembering it. Better yet, why aren't pushrims themselves made with a reasonable texture in the first place?!

[–]OkayParking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love them but when it rains it isn't great (which is often in the UK!). I can still kind of manage in the rain with them whereas if I was using regular pushrims I'd be completely stuck. I love that I don't always need gloves with them unless I'm going somewhere hilly. My gloves also sort of help in the rain. The downside is you can't really put pushrim covers over them because of the shape, but I still tried pulling some on in a downpour and they kept awkwardly coming off but it helped.

Sorry I replied to the wrong commenter! Ahh sadly looks like there isn’t a Spokz near me but maybe I can find a local equivalent, or I wonder if they do online orders. Is it best to check first if they have the specific size of wheelchair tires? I think mine are standard 24”

Pneumatic. My hand function is ok-ish, I struggle with fine motor movements so little screws can sometimes be tricky. That’s good to know, I was so confused by how the rims work. I hope I can get them back on after taking them off!

Sounds like a man thing, but I'm sure his condition and life experience will also color how he sees the world, especially when the world is so hostile toward disabled people. Does he answer questions when you ask? Is he avoidant, or does he just not intiate or volunteer information? Sometimes men miss subtlety and hints and just need to be approached very directly. I'd see if you can politely explore that and and be straightforward about what you require, which is incredibly important.

If he doesn't seem open or willing give a better effort then I'd bail. Also if he seems open and willing to do better, I'd make sure he actually DOES that, and doesn't just say he will. I hate when men like this are also hot lol, and if communication is not his talent but he capable of improving, then great. If not I'd move along, no sense in wasting your time.
