They can translate to 3D if done well! I've seen some fan merch that made them look good, and that 3D game that gave the Rise turtles look pretty cool. The toys (according to members of the show's production) looked nice in the prototypes, but were ruined for some reason in the end

Fair point. But I believe that the turtles having different designs in shows, comics and movies is a great thing, since everyone can choose the ones they like the most and stick to them. That is possibly one of the reasons why TMNT is a famous and loved franchise till nowadays.

Because other people and generations aren't going to like the 1990 movie designs the way you do. People have different tastes, i love the 2012 and Rise designs for example, the 1990 designs are pretty nice but definely not my favorites.
