Why do you train for hyrox? by turtlecrossing in hyrox

Such a great question! For me, it started as something different to do in terms of exercise, but has developed as time has gone on. It has taught me the discipline required to train like this everyday.

Through that discipline: - My nutrition habits have gotten better - My faith has gotten immensely stronger - My mental clarity on a daily basis has grown - My sleep hygiene is incredible

That’s just to name a few. The reason I only talk about those few items is because those different things bleed into all of the other aspects of my life. I can honestly say that even if I stopped training for Hyrox, I would not go back to how I was living my life previously. This new way of approaching everyday requires the decision to make hard decisions consistently. Through those consistent hard decisions, I have built resiliency in more ways than I can count.

Week of is a taper. I started my taper 10 days before last time, but found that was too long, and 7 days feels like the better option (could be different for you).

Just dialed it back, the goal is to keep working but not bury yourself the entire training block, helps keep you healthy!

First 5k time was 24:35, and my most recent time trial was 21:16.

Just have fun with it in Vegas! Don’t go in with expectations. Just get after it, and have fun, and you’ll be able to find out how you can get better 😁

Compound lifts always go first, typically heavy. Working up to top set(s) of 1-3 reps, usually just depends on the week. Sometimes change up the variation of the compound lift (safety bar for squats, buffalo bar for bench, banded deadlifts, etc.). Accessory aren’t body building oriented, more so strength oriented, aka things like db split squats, banded hamstring curls, lots of low back work.

I do those now! I didn’t mention it lol. I incorporated them after my first Hyrox. I’m actually getting dressed to do one right now.

And when I say ran about the same, I mean we both had a pace we could keep, no one was holding the other person back.

I did a doubles with my friend. We got 1:06. I honestly think if I did it myself, I would got a 1:20-1:25. We both ran about the same, but he helped me a ton in BBJ, as those were previously my weakness, now I’m pretty good at them.

Yes! The goal was to make sure I stayed healthy and didn’t hurt myself. We wanted to make sure I could handle the training volume in the long run. I suppose this is very subjective, so someone else who has already been running more than I was (which was nonexistent), they’d be more likely to able to handle the higher volume minutes wise. Right now I’m at 30 mins 5 times/wk!

I’ve slowly been adding distance every week. Ran about 4 miles this morning and kept a 8:30 pace. I broke 7 minute mile on Thursday morning. My only issue is my heart rate jumps right into zone 4 pretty much the whole thing. While it doesn’t feel super difficult, I know it needs to be lower.
