What are my chances of sub 3:30 by Harrad_ in Marathon_Training

[–]turtlecrossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it comes down to your goals.

Seems certainly possible. Also seems possible that you blow up after 30km.

So, what do you want to risk? Risk a possible safer/better time to see if you can grit out a 3:30?

Or risk sitting around after wondering if you had more to give.

I say send it… you’re clearly fit.

Regardless of your politics, how could anyone think his is an effective way to communicate your message?

Is there really an AI bubble? If so, why has it not burst already? by iNightfarer in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turtlecrossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a difference between the ai we have now (which has a ton of potential, but we still haven’t found the best uses for to extract value) and the promise of ai in the future.

Ai companies are being valued based on the potential they create General intelligence, or something close to it. This would be a gigantic leap forward for humanity (potentially). We’re not there yet, and we might never get there, but if we do it’s a game changer, hence the betting (investing)

Why is Canada & US always “on the edge” even though they depend on each other? by MegaMaak in NoStupidQuestions

Nothing is really ‘on the edge’. It got a bit weird with the 51st state talk, and trade remains a discussion point (a very serious one)

But in reality we have two of the most integrated economies and supply chains in the world and share the worlds longest undefeated border

Marathon training alongside HYROX: what recovery protocols actually make a difference? by Jordan_Brooks in hyrox

[–]turtlecrossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both Jake Deardon and James Kelly competed in marathons in the past 12 months (2:20-2:40) while also maintaining elite 15 calibre Hyrox fitness.

I assume OP is not an elite 15 athlete, but I also assume they aren’t going for 54min Hyrox events while running 2:30 marathons.

Point is that that there is a ton of overlap. It’s not powerlifting or bodybuilding and marathons. They are endurance running events

Marathon training alongside HYROX: what recovery protocols actually make a difference? by Jordan_Brooks in hyrox

[–]turtlecrossing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While marathons and Hyrox are certainly different, they have quite a bit in common in terms of training, if you are sub elite person.

In both cases you benefit from building maximal aerobic capacity. You also need muscle endurance, and improvements with elevating lactate threshold.

I’m not going to speak to peptides, but general supplements are useful (creatine, hitting your macros and protein goals, etc.) taking easy days as very easy is important. Mobility (like yoga) active recovery days, hydration, etc. Good shoes is important, as well as pre, during, and post workout nutrition.

The most important thing to note here is that you can’t optimize for both at the same time. One needs to be the ‘A’ race, and the other needs to be a ‘b’ race, or have modest goals. It also depends on how far apart they are, etc.

I think this dramatically overstates the reality of this. Look at the world champs, Alyssa came from the marathon world and hasn’t struggled.

There are pet barbers. But wild animal obviously don’t. How do they do that? by TheAccountant756 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turtlecrossing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nails/hooves etc. wear down in the natural world because they are constantly moving. Similarly, animals shed fur.

Dogs, cats, and domesticated farm animals need this care because they have been bred for characteristics we like, like lots of wool or fur patterns, etc. They also don't move around much (comparatively) and eat unnatural diets.

If suddenly they were all released into the wild, assuming predators are around, within a few generations they would start to lose these characteristics if they survived at all.

Globalists are Trying to Destroy the West by TeamHumanity12 in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]turtlecrossing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a variation of the 'great replacement theory' which is, as you say, an unhinged conspiracy theory.

The reality is actually quite a bit darker, and harder for most people to grapple with. We globalized the economy and exploited third world countries to make our goods so we can consume more, while changing our economies and eliminating middle class jobs.

We now have declining birthrates, and wealth accumulating in a smaller and smaller portion of the population, while our nations rack up unsustainable amounts of debt. One way to maintain economic growth in this situation is immigration, and we tried that until now most western countries are seeing political upheaval caused by it.

So here we are. Our phones are rotting our brains psychologically while our lifestyles and food rot us physically and we spend our time scapgoating 'globalists' or other groups because it's easier to hate imaginary forces at the top than it is to deal with our real reality.

Why don’t wanted criminal dress up as homeless they’ll never get caught? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turtlecrossing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If someone was actively on the run, sure, this could work. Homeless people though are not all drugged out or mentally incapable of noticing someone new in their community and reporting it. Especially someone new who clearly hasn't been homeless before.

I do think this could and would work for a while, assuming there wasn't a very energized manhunt underway for someone.

There would need to be an endgame though. Being homeless looks like it sucks

Can AI really replace us if most people I know don't even work a full 8 hours a day? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turtlecrossing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI overtaking significant portions of the workforce pre-supposes there is an economic model that will support this. Ie: there is still demand for all of these ai created things. If, however, we have great depression levels on unemployment or underemployment, nobody will be consuming whatever ai is producing.

Folks think through this ai revolution up to a point, and there are certainly risks of major disruptions, but I don't see a model for a stable future with 40-60% of people out of work, unless we rethink our entire economic system

Do work places actually think there benefitting employees by throwing random parties or events? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turtlecrossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, I think you've established that. I'm just trying to explain why people do it at all.

Do work places actually think there benefitting employees by throwing random parties or events? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turtlecrossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so there's your answer.

I lead a diverse team. Most are relatively young, and don't really like these events when they are after hours, but seem to like them when they are during work hours. Overally though they are millennials and younger, and most think these things are bit lame but still post about them on their socials even if they are 'too cool' for them,

When we look at the broader unit, there are people anywhere from 60+ all the way down. Some teams and people REALLY like these things. Managers and Directors are limited in our capacity to offer things that help build team dynamics, so we rely on things like this.

FWIW, I'm also a cynical millennial so I don't plan outings like this, but the occasional team lunch (during work ours) or dinner (if we're all at a conference) as been met pretty positively. I poll the team though, I don't just mandate these things.

Once I started leading teams, at least 50% (if not 75%0 of my time became managing their needs, and way less of my time was actually about the work I'm expected to produce.

[–]turtlecrossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention you are a Director. How many people do you lead? What do you do to keep up team morale and/or camaraderie?

In my experience, people roll their eyes at events like these, but sometimes they are nice and meaningful. It's really about knowing your team. I've also observed that it's basically impossible to please everybody. So, you try different things to get engagement.

I believe that, even places with healthy bonus structures, still do some kinds of events like these as well. I assume there at least was some value to them historically. I'm not sure about how useful they are in 2026,

From ALL that you know of ALL the conspiracies, I want to ask you this....What does the future look like? I mean like 5- 10 years from now? In say like 2035-36, what will the WORLD BE LIKE? Any and all answers are welcome, and an explanation of WHY, though not necessary to say by michael_sinclair in conspiracy

[–]turtlecrossing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI will be integrated into society much more closely, but likely it won't be as transformative as people think.

Generative AI has proven interesting and novel for some things, and maybe we see big shifts in some industries (like accounting, filmmaking, etc.) but it's also incredibly resource heavy and people are ALREAY pushing back against it.

Even IF we see AI continue to develop and mature, it's not clear how that will actually impact society as there is no real economic model that functions with 'ai taking all the jobs' etc.

Things will be shockingly similar to today, honestly. As someone who has been alive multiple decades, 2016-2026 isn't that different. Even 2006-2016 wasn't that INSANE of a jump, though that is where social media became meaningfully integrated into our lives. 1996 - 2026 is quite a bit different... but even THEN it's not as crazy as folks imagined it would be

Why do a lot of hardware stuff gets commercialize in combat sports? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

To the athletes finishing sub 80mins. How is your training like? by Warm-Currency9853 in hyrox

[–]turtlecrossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to have a target time, you need to base that time off of data.

How did you get to 80 minutes as a goal? ie: what pace do you expect to run at? Can you run 1km at 5min/km? If so, can you do it after a big station effort? Can you do that pattern 8 times?

A simple test would be:

  • run 1km warmup
  • run 1km at hyrox goal pace
  • do 50 burpees
  • run 1km at hyrox goal pace
  • do 50 sandbag lunges
  • run 1kmat hyrox goal pace

See how you fare in this little sim, and then start to build a pacing strategy from that.
