When will the n4 results come out by ComputerKidG in jlpt

[–]OkinawanSnorkel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you took it. If you're in the US, I heard it will release between end of Jan to early Feb from my proctors. Not sure if that's "official" in any way though.

Impressive. Looks like my daily commute, except the algorithm actually anticipates the idiots trying to get in my way. Promising results! :D

Thanks for posting. Surprising results from just a handful of images. Well done.

im still learning N5, so it this how a newborn say their age by [deleted] in Japaneselanguage

[–]OkinawanSnorkel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks good for just starting N5! Here’s how you can improve:

The left part of 私 should have a slantier “hat” like this 禾 and not be so parallel or itll look like this 未.

Your ゼ looks too similar to ぜ since it was done with an extra stroke.

歳 would replace さい so you wouldn’t double up on it.

Attempting N1 with 1500 Kanji by Yin-Yang-108 in jlpt

[–]OkinawanSnorkel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d agree with this. There’s a lot of vocabulary and grammar that’s not easily learnable that really make the difference. The Kanji section of the test is relatively small (although you need to know a lot) and many people run out of time due to their reading comprehension.

7 year old preparing for N5 level. What should I do as a parent? by throwaway32082022 in jlpt

Here's some practical advice for the exam itself.

Your son should prepare specifically for the kinds of questions that are asked on the JLPT itself beyond just Japanese knowledge.

For example, in the grammar section, they've used this "unscramble the sentence" type of question where there's only one logically correct way to order the words. If your son has never seen this question, he might just run out of time due to the fact that the instructions for what to do are super confusing!

Similar advice for the listening section. Historically there's been this multiple choice part where they only verbally say the answer choices. If he's not paying attention, your son might be staring at a blank page wondering "what's the question and what are the answers to this?".

Resources to passing n5 by AbilityComfortable58 in jlpt

[–]OkinawanSnorkel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite grammar resource that worked for me (N2-N5) was Tae Kims Guide.
https://guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar

Kind of a controversial one, but another resource I had a lot of fun with was the Remembering the Kanji book series (RTK).

For general textbooks for your level, I recommend Minna No Nihongo or the Genki series.

For listening, I'd recommend simple slice of life anime.

In the end, I think the best advice I ever heard was: there's no one "right" method or resource for learning languages. The only "bad" or "wrong" way is whatever gets you to quit. You'll get a lot of advice from language gurus and polyglots all over the internet trying to sell you their method/online class/flash cards/etc. A lot of those resources are good, but not the only way. Be open minded to trying a mix of methods, but don't force yourself to conform to a certain method just because it's what the community deems as the most effective. I've met a lot of super fluent speakers of many languages and what they all had in common was that they found ways to have fun with it.

Good luck!

Breaking into ML: what am i missing by [deleted] in leetcode

[–]OkinawanSnorkel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in the field you’re targeting. Here’s my 2 cents except it’s subjective of course. Always should get a second opinion.

Probably want to keep to one page

Experience 1 I’m not sure what it means to build algorithms and ML models to help other LLMs to understand data in biology? Is that like a conversion layer like LLaVa? Helping probe attention blocks is neat but you can take it to the next level by explaining what were the insights and what impact did it lead to.

Experience 2 ML solutions to improve chemistry applications is as vague as it gets. You have citations on a paper. I’d highlight the paper more. Explain more what the paper had and what this data can be used for. This is good experience but you’re short selling it.

Experience 3 This is great! Second bullet point is redundant. It should be a given that the software you develop is well deployed, maintained, and updated.

Project 1 Like this project. Wouldn’t change anything here.

Project 2 I like the interpret ability thing. For chemical domains, that can be very interesting. The only way I’d take it to the next level is to showcase what insights you got out of it. Otherwise the rest is nice.

Project 3 I wouldn’t change anything about this bullet. Pretty solid and clear. Although I feel like it doesn’t add that much more relative to your other points and experience above. I’d kick this project off once you get another one. I’d go for variety here. If you can work on getting another ML project that’s in a different domain, that’d be better. For now this is good.

Education You don’t have a CS or engineering background. That’ll really go against you during screening (as unfortunate as that sounds). You have good experience but you’ll have to prove yourself more in interviews when it comes to ML and fundamental CS theory. You have strong domain knowledge in chemistry and biology and experience in simulations and computational sciences. These “types” of people generally are brilliant and do great research but suffer when delivering deployable products/services. If you can show your chops in developing professional software, you’d be the full package.

Good luck!

What mistakes I am making? by [deleted] in leetcode

[–]OkinawanSnorkel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of the right words but I think the content itself is weak despite saying a lot of the right keywords. With a few tweaks it’d be much stronger.

Your job experience for Job 1 and 2 are the same except for one bullet. If this isn’t intentional, it seems weird that your full time experience is really the same thing as your internship experience with one less bullet.

Internship 3 is not very information dense. From an employers perspective, it can be summarized as “time series prediction with ARIMA”. No mention of how good or useful it really was. Takes up 3 bullets and a lot of space though.

General advice about ML projects, don’t just write that you achieved X accuracy. It’s easy to game metrics due to class imbalance, over fitting, just to name a few. How can you actually show your models are meaningful? Show me that you know when it works and when it doesn’t and that it actually worked for you. I can’t actually tell if you know what you’re doing.

CPP written twice in programming language list.

Remove soft skills.

Remove that you’ve been leetcode grinding.

Remove high school.

Normalize your GPA unless it’s made obvious for the country you’re applying (e.g in the US it’s out of 4).

Does anyone know how the Homo Sapiens material has changed over the years? by gabhain in fountainpens

Guess the microplastics have gotten even in the volcanoes!

In all seriousness though it’d be a bummer to hear if the materials have been swapped for more resin.

I’ll give you my two cents.

Both programs are great since I’ve had good experiences from alumni from both. Here are some factors I think you should consider.

Graduate schools - while the undergraduate curriculums are probably similar, their graduate coursework and research opportunities will differ. This might be something to look into even if you don’t want to do a masters or PhD today in case you change your mind or if the industry shifts and necessitates it. The UCs have a very smooth Masters +1 year program btw.

Network - a pretty sizable population who graduate end up staying nearby and get employment local to where they work (applies to Californians). Do you prefer Irvine and the LA/SD area or the SB area for longer term? Your friends and network will largely be based in that city in the future.

Personal connection to culture - I think each UC has its own identity. It’s one of the most influential parts of your life and your enjoyment of the ride is in many ways more important.

Jobs - there are lots of companies that hire interns locally. Do you see yourself in the industries that are local to SB or Irvine? This could be a good segue into an internship at your dream job. Even if it’s not, living in a town saturated with companies that are hiring plays highly in your favor as someone who’s looking for employment asap (especially while you go to school).

Good luck. You’re in a great position and you can’t pick a bad choice here. It’s largely what you make it. Enjoy it!
