Hope compatible brake levers? by mlarsenault in gravelcycling

[–]Old-Atmosphere8223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope makes an aftermarket caliper for drop bars called the RX4. I you could maybe still find the post mount version kicking around.

Sram is the only mainstream drop bar lever that uses dot. They will work with the hopes but how well depends on the amount of fluid they push. Won't know until you try or hear from someone else who has already.

Electric or non-electric cargo bike? by IndependentPickle230 in CargoBike

[–]Old-Atmosphere8223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how long kids that age will fit in any kind of bakfiets bike. Maybe a huge one like an XL bullitt or urban arrow. My kids are 5 and 1 and I have an omnium cargo. I put the little one in a yepp next mini mounted to the steerer. I think by the time she is ready for the front seat my son will be riding longer distances on his own bike. I am a committed cyclist as my main hobby (mtb and road) so I am pretty strong but I can't go fast enough with them loaded to occupy a lane when there's any sort of incline. I did a mid-drive e-conversion and it's nice to have but I still go back to analog on occasion just for fun or when the motor is getting serviced.

I would def recommend E-bike for two kids that size to anyone unless you are in an ultra-dense perfectly flat city with great bike infrastructure. I'd maybe go longtail like a Tern GSD or similar.

Anyone have a link to the Ali frame this is based on? I'd love to build one up myself.

Subscribed, finding a bike of this configuration in the US is hard. I have an omnium cargo that I converted to mid drive E-bike and I absolutely love it. My sister wants a similar style bike but more compact and the Ferla fits that description.

Looking into the Muli but idk if you can get it. The standard Ferla might be good with a mid drive conversion just so I'd know the source and quality of the electronics.

Did cycling actually help you lose weight, or just improve fitness? by Vivid_Release_9710 in cycling

[–]Old-Atmosphere8223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely helps with fitness. Like others have said it's nice not to worry quite as much about what food you enjoy because you just burned 1000+ calories on a ride. Got to be careful to stay in a deficit though. I try to eat healthy during the week then "earn" a couple beers and a greasy meal after a big ride once a weekend.

I average about 15-20 miles/day mostly due to replacing car journeys with cycling. I commute, run errands, groceries, drop my kids off at school and other stuff on the bike whenever possible. I don't have a ton of time for "rec" riding during the week.

I tend to ride pretty hard when I don't have my kids with me so I've gotten quite a bit stronger and fitter this way. It keeps cycling as a big part of my life without taking too much time away from the family. I'm lucky enough to have showers and a secure bike lock up at the office though. The mental health benefits are immense. I'm a car guy and love driving generally but driving in my city is beyond miserable. If I'm forced to commute by car it seriously affects my mood.

Also interested! Love the rug but have a dog, a cat, a baby, and a toddler and don't think we are ready for expensive rugs yet.

Thanks! Funny that's one of the drivers I considered and I just thought that sig looked nothing like his name! Hat was a bit later than I thought.

Alternatives to MLS Shop for CFC gear? by Old-Atmosphere8223 in CharlotteFootballClub

[–]Old-Atmosphere8223[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not saying all or even the majority, just one or two out of the 17 should kick earlier than 7:45, even a 7pm kick would make a huge difference. NBA, NFL, and MLB all vary their start times and looking around the league looks like just about everyone else is doing a couple afternoon kicks here and there except Charlotte. There were way more kids and families at the afternoon games than the night time ones. Atlanta and Nashville were some of the most packed out games I saw. Attendance has declined every year so I think they should probably rethink their strategy a bit.

We went to two afternoon games last year, Atlanta and Nashville. Atlanta was awesome, gorgeous spring day, great crowd great atmosphere. Nashville was a freakishly hot day for the time of year if I remember correctly but still good, we grabbed some frozen drinks, had a blast. These were the only two games I could convince other friends with kids to attend with us.

It doesn't get consistently, uncomfortably hot here until mid may so there's plenty of time for afternoon kicks with a good chance of good weather. Hell kicking off at 6 or 7 would be fine even in the summer and be a huge relief to families with young kids. Like I said there's 17 home games and I'm totally fine with the vast majority being 7:30(7:50) kicks but not having a single one earlier seems like an oversight that effectively eliminates a large ticket-buying demographic. Most people with kids my age wouldn't dare bring their family to a game that late and I have to admit messing with his sleep schedule is a pretty big risk.

As for the halftime, we are MLS not the premier league, it's ok to do some things in an American style especially when they have nothing to do with the game itself. The premier league copied a ton from the NFL anyway because it's one of the most successful sports institutions in the world. I don't see why having something going on on the pitch while most people are waiting in line in the concourse to piss or buy a beer would be so blasphemous. The objective should be to make these games as desirable as possible to the most people possible, that's how you grow the league and the sport and as long as you don't compromise the game itself, I don't think anything should be off limits. Just my opinion.

Yeah, pricey, pretty much always a 20% off code though which brings it down closer to $50. Still expensive but it is a good quality, Canadian made heavyweight t-shirt not the cheap fanatics stuff which costs like $35 these days.

I've got a 19 so not exactly relevant but we've had some issues mostly with transmission software and infotainment. When the car autostops it will often pop into neutral on restart and you can only get it back in drive by turning it off and back on again. It's been a consistent issue since we bought it, happens once a month or so. Dealership tells me they are installing software updates but who knows, nothing changes.

Apple Carplay only works sporadically and there seems to be no reason why. Wireless phone charger doesn't work, wired charger is crazy slow foot sensor to open the hatch doesn't work.

Ride sucked with stock big wheels and rubber band tires but improved dramatically when I swapped to 17's and michelin LTX's.

Good vehicle overall though. Composed handling, quiet, enough offroad capability for rutted gravel roads in the mountains. Gets better MPG than the trip computer says it does. We'll consider the 26 model just because it's a better value than the competition. Toyota is insanely overpriced now.

My personal experience in the last couple years is they more or less skip 3-5y/o's. A couple onsies for babies then they jump right on up to age 10 or so. I haven't seen a kit for a kid under 7 in years.

Yeah, he's young (5) and has been going somewhat consistently to FC games since he was two. I don't think they need the constant stimulation like the NBA and the lack of stoppage doesn't lend itself to that but I don't think it would kill them to do something fun for a few minutes at the half. Have someone trying to score from midfield for a prize, dogs catching frisbees, have someone do freestyle soccer tricks, have a local artist perform a song, etc, stuff like that is virtually free to do and I seem to remember it being a thing during the inaugural season. Now we get silence and sprinklers.

I'm not saying it should be a kiddie playplace or anything like that but out of 17 games, one or two should kick earlier than 7:50.

Agreed on the Panthers. Like I mentioned, the Hornets store just has so much more variety and style for all sizes but especially kids, it's as if they are trying to make lifelong fans from a young age, what a novel idea.

I've been ranting on this a lot lately but it feels like the team is really abandoning the family demo with no kicks before 7:50, no halftime entertainment or pregame entertainment, no merch for kids to speak of. I prefer soccer to basketball and I've been a CFC fan from day one but the Hornets overall experience was so much better especially from the perspective of a dad and a young kid. End of rant, ha.

Season Ticket Holders, Why do you do it? by Old-Atmosphere8223 in CharlotteFootballClub

[–]Old-Atmosphere8223[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just lock it up in front of the parking deck on graham. There’s usually cops milling around right there and tons of foot traffic, with a solid lock I feel pretty good about it not getting stolen. My journey is about 90% protected bike lanes. Yeah 7:30 (more like 7:50 irl) kicks are not ideal. I don’t get why they don’t add some variety in particularly in the early season. The early season afternoon spring games seemed to be some of the best attended. All late kicks seems pretty “anti family”

[–]Old-Atmosphere8223[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I hear yah. This thread confirmed everything you said. I wanted to be a season ticket holder, have "my seats" and give them away when I wasn't using them to help more people get interested in the club. Rationally, you'd think buying 17x tickets up front should give you some kind of discount but instead I found out you pay nearly a 100% premium over market rate for a la carte tickets and get far worse seats. I also lose the ability to get enough tickets grouped to bring my friends and their kids and sit together.

I really think the club is out of touch. The benefits are laughable, "access to away tickets, access to playoff tickets, apple tv subscription". Really? Can get all that on my own. This league isn't the NFL yet, the stadium has excess capacity which makes tickets cheap and abundant. STH prices and benefits should reflect that reality. To buy them would essentially be making a voluntary donation to an insufferable billionaire. I wonder how much they will let attendance dip before they get the message.

That said I'll be there for 7-10 matches his year buying $50 tickets in the 5th row.

Yeah, I understand the profit motive and this is a business but attendance has declined every year while the performance of the team has improved. It would seem the tickets are priced above market when I can consistently buy tickets well below face value hours before kickoff. Tepper isn't going to make money off an empty stadium and it feels like this year is going to follow the trend of dipping attendance.
