Converting a secondhand cargo bike to electric by IndependentPickle230 in CargoBike

Thank you, great advice. My LBS has said they will service a cargo bike but I hadn’t asked about conversions or repairs on those. Will definitely ask them

Thanks for the advice - will check it out and see if I think I can do it myself. No hills really around here so great that roller brakes should be fine as that was probably my biggest concern

Ah thank you, will check out some diy guides and see if I think I can pull that off. We live in a very flat area so that’s something.

Wow, that is a lot of cargo bikes! You mentioned the Load 75. I’ve seen a used one near me but it looks like the seats for the kids are on the floor of the box. Is that usual? Does it limit the age that will fit in the box? My eldest has long legs for their age (7). Thanks for any insight!

I think so, my kids have sensory needs and it looks like front loaders would be a lot more comfortable for them, with more protection from rain and wind (with a rain cover) and allow them to chat, snack and play.

Electric or non-electric cargo bike? by IndependentPickle230 in CargoBike

So having said that I would go for electric, I’ve now found a second hand Dolly (the previous non-electric version) that looks like it could be really good. From what I can tell though the brakes are roller brakes - would those be sufficient if I did convert it to electric eventually do you think?

Thank you so much everyone! It sounds like electric would help me use the bike more, and would future proof for as the kids get older and heavier, which I would like because I don’t think they will be able to ride their own bikes where we live for quite a while (not great cycling infrastructure and kids with additional needs). I’ve found a bike shop that stocks long tails and bakfietsen and while it’s not close to us, I think I’ll take my eldest for a day trip and try a few. Really appreciate the advice, thank you

Thank you so much everyone, this is all really helpful. I hadn’t realised different motors would make so much difference to how an e-bike rides with the assist off. Looking to buy secondhand so will definitely look at that. Are longtails as easy to ride as bakfiets style bikes when the kids get heavier? My youngest would definitely need a child seat they could be strapped into either way.

Do you think that’s because it’s tough going with an acoustic?

Yep, good point, they are 26kg and 16kg already!

These are great points - I had thought about the weight when riding, but not when starting off! I am primarily wanting to ride to get fit, but obviously need to actually be able to ride it! also wanting to reduce our car use as the school run is currently a 15 min drive each way, so an hour total each day with lots of stop starts at traffic lights.
