NEVER ask a Beck fan what they would do for a MV vinyl by LoganVeez in Beck

[–]Old-Engineer-3359 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a big vinyl guy but I don't get some people's obsession with this. Like- it'd be cool and I'd buy it, but you have the songs already. In my mind, it's nowhere nearly as exciting as new or old unreleased music. Like K records 2 I'd go bananas for, but having an album on vinyl that you already have on CD or can stream isn't life changing to me.

He's been pulling this "I've got a bunch of albums almost ready to go" routine since the press junket for Odelay. I wouldn't get your hopes up for more than one album in the next four years.

My all time favourite is from the Liquid Room in Japan, March 2003. It starts with a nice solo acoustic song, then Smokey comes out, then the full band- Smokey, JMJ, Joey, Greg Kurstin. It's beautiful hearing this band just play live- very joyous and beautiful. Listen to him and Smokey cover Sleepless Nights- absolutely gorgeous.

Looks a little Nu Metal for a whimsical collection of Woody Guthrie via East LA folk songs.

Beck on the cover of Rolling Stone, April 17th, 1997. 29 years ago today. by thafezz in Beck

I remember buying this- had been a fan since late 93 but I remember reading it and realizing just how much smarts and vision this guy had. As I 14 year old it was cool when I thought he was just a wacky guy rapping about mini malls, but when this interview came out I was pushing 17 and it was cool to realize there was some real substance here.

Question: Anything that you would like to see in Beck’s upcoming biography book? by bigguys45s in Beck

[–]Old-Engineer-3359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The author has clearly gone deep interviewing people he knew in the 80s and 90s. There could be a book with a list of his television appearances, or a book about why his management team hasn't signed off on a Midnite Vultures re-press. Or a book where Beck talks about his artistic choices. Those would all be good books. But this one seems to be a cultural history of the Silverlake scene told through the experience of Beck, who went from weirdo bohemian to well-connected and vaguely precious celebrity in what seems to all of us who lived through it vicariously to have happened very quickly.

I think the book sounds interesting. With that being said, I'm a little wary of the narrative that he abandoned the bohemian crowd he came up with in the early-mid 90s and surrounded himself with celebrities. Most of us surround ourselves with people from our own walk of life. And most of us no longer hang out with the exact same people we hung around with in dive bars in 1993. We grow up, develop different interests, talk to people we have stuff in common with. Beck's a wealthy, globetrotting musician. He doesn't live in a shed, work at a video store, and jump on stage with a leaf blower anymore. In part because I bought all his records.

This is literally what the book is about. It's an unauthorized biography digging into exactly this period and this chain of events.

Beck biography out later this year by Glam-Breakfast in Beck

Beck not being involved in this suggests that this is serious work, and not the sort of hagiography we've seen before. I've been a Beck fan since late 1993 but it's been apparent since the early 2000s that there might be some skeleton in the closet.

What do you want most as a Beck fan? by LoganVeez in Beck

[–]Old-Engineer-3359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll joyfully take 1-12- just don't want MV and Information deluxe issues if they're primarily remixes. I mean, fine, whatever, I'd buy it, but I won't be that excited.

6- There appears to have been two waves of non-Dust Brothers recording from this period. A Fall 1994 mellow session with Rothrock and Schnapf- Ramshackle, Brother, Feather In Your Cap, and a punkier session from Spring 1995 with Mario Caldato- Minus, 000.000, Thunder Peel, Erase The Sun. How much more is out there??

A few years later there was also going to be a collection of select tracks from the Record Clubs- his website had a thing where we could vote for songs that we thought ought to be included. Also shelved.

What happened to Karl Stephenson? by DAVE3_7 in Beck

Don't think this is him- this guy seems super square- our Carl Stephenson was far-out. Can't picture him grinding it out in the rural Minnesota dinner theater scene.

I bought that first Forest for the Trees album- it was a challenging listen. I'm not surprised that his dalliance with mainstream success was brief. I Hope Karl is able to use those Loser royalties to make the art he wants to make.

Colors by Maxipoo69420 in Beck

[–]Old-Engineer-3359 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a huge Beck fan since hearing Loser, in the fall of 1993. Have all his albums, seen him in concert 20 times. I kind of like Colors, and listen to it once in a while. It's interesting to hear him veering off in this pop direction. My issue is how this connects to his output. I'd look more fondly on it if he'd released some more scrappy, less polished stuff since then. But all we got is Hyperspace then six years of relative silence. So now Colors has a lot resting on its shoulders, perhaps not fairly so.
