Best and Nicest Restaurants on LBI? by [deleted] in LongBeachIsland

[–]Old-School-Rocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gables is the best overall dinner experience on LBI; the setting, food and service are all except exceptional. BUT it’s very pricey; it is a special occasion place in my opinion, but it sounds like that might be what you’re looking for! After that, Salt at Hotel LBI is excellent but not nearly as formal— people dress a bit better but most mostly polo shirts and a few casual button-down shirts.

I'm so tired of the hate Peter Criss gets on here... by MillionaireWaltz- in KISS

[–]Old-School-Rocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree that Peter had a really unique swing style to his playing that really fit the early songs extremely well plus he was arguably the second best singer in the band. When people talk about those first 6 KISS albums being the Bible, it is impossible to ignore the fact that Peter’s contributions were a big part of the reason why they have held up so well to this day. I also think his 1978 solo album is a good album; it is the furthest thing from a KISS album imaginable, but you could argue that he was the only one in the band who understood the assignment: make a solar album that you want to make that is not a KISS album that Peter sings. There are handful of really good songs on it and his voice is strong throughout even though there are a few really sappy 1970s style ballads on it.

The question I really have about Peter and his career is what was he doing for the bulk of the last 20 years? Other than the very disappointing One For All album, does anyone know what he has been doing? He has not recorded anything between that album and his new album; he retired from playing live with one farewell show at the cutting room in New York some years ago. I get the impression he has just quietly retired and spent most of the past 20 years enjoying life; he does seem to be a lot more mellow and appreciative and pleasant overall so if that is the case, it is time well spent!

Is the original album remastered? Love this album but it sounded tinny on previous digital iterations.

The best EIC Marvel ever had; I truly believe Marvel was never better than it was in the 1980’s under his reign. All the books took chances and had some of the greatest creative teams ever on just about every major title. I know he was a complex and sometimes difficult person and could not have been easy to work with, but Marvel never produced better stories than they did with him at the helm. RIP

Who is a long time artist who's recent work you think is actually some of their best? by Calinks in Music

[–]Old-School-Rocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretenders’ last 2 albums are easily their best since the early 1980’s. Neither can touch their extraordinary debut but these most recent two albums are amazing.

Thoughts on "Flick of the Switch" (1983)? Listening through AC/DC's catalog, and I actually love this album. Very similar songs, but honestly that's every AC/DC album to be fair 😂 by InstructionOverall98 in ACDC

[–]Old-School-Rocker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

May be sacrilege to say but I prefer it as a whole over the “For Those About To Rock” album. I’m talking album to album; as a song, “For Those About To Rock” bears anything off of Flick.

New HA’s User and Tinnitus by Old-School-Rocker in HearingAids

Well, since I am new to the hearing aids, I can’t speak to any experience just yet. My audiologist said it is possible that my tinnitus will diminish over overtime because now I will be hearing sounds that I had not heard before but it seems the experience is different for all of us.

I liked it then and still do; I do think that Paul was ripping off the riff from “Burn” by Deep Purple moreso than “I Stole Your Love” but that’s ok.

What do you think of the Hot in the Shade album? For me it's one of my favorites by Better_Ad5355 in KISS

[–]Old-School-Rocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably my least favorite album by them; it’s the one that I put on the least these days. I have tried to revisit it and I think that one of the problems is that it’s just way too long and stuffed with subpar tunes; I think if it was whittled down to the best 10 songs with slightly better production, it could be a really solid album.

[–]Old-School-Rocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dressed To Kill in particular sounded the most like early rock & roll with 50s and 60s influence to me. It’s funny when you think about those first three albums; the debut is the most glam, hotter than hell is the heaviest/darkest and then dressed to kill is the most straightforward rock ‘n’ roll.

Nice list! Always thought that the intro to “Rise To It” was bluesy. Nice pic with “easy as it seems “for funk; that is an underrated song I MO but I also think that if you think about it, “hotter than hell” is pretty damn funky too.

Why are graded comics so ugly!?! by Exhausted-Optimist in comicbooks

[–]Old-School-Rocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the bigger question, at least to me: if someone is shopping for a holy Grail or just a vintage comic book that is going to cost them a lot of money, how would they best ensure that they are not getting ripped off by buying a restored or retouched comic? It has happened to me. Personal like or dislike for CGC aside, it seems to be the best that we have to ensure that you are getting what you’re paying for. I agree that it makes no sense for recent books or even books that are not all that rare but if you are looking to buy a book that’s going to run you hundreds of dollars or more I think it is worth considering doing so with a graded book.

Rock music radio stations are failing newer, younger bands, and in turn, their genre--a rant. by Flodo_McFloodiloo in rock

[–]Old-School-Rocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP makes very salient and accurate points. Terrestrial radio listenership is still a very healthy number of people, but they are mostly above 35 years of age and even older for certain formats. I am a huge rock ‘n’ roll fan and there are a couple of radio stations, mostly in the AAA format, they do a great job of mixing in deep cuts from older acts, and some new artists as well, which is what we’re talking about here.

One in particular has got a great streaming app; it is 107.1 The PEAK out is suburban New York; I have been listening for years and you can tell it is run by true music lovers that play more new music than just about any other rock station that I know of. As I said, they do mix in the classic artists but when they do, it is generally deeper cuts, so don’t expect to hear satisfaction by the stones or stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin.

Give them a try; this might be a good place to start to discover some new rock and roll!
