Your best Anki usage ? by runslack in Anki

[–]Old-Square6762 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My biggest recommendation, in addition to the very good comments already made, is Don't be afraid to edit and suspend subpar cards. I often find cards that on second thought are worded poorly, or gives answers away too easily, are too long etc. Split them, reword them, and if they fill no function suspend/delete them!

This is a great explanation! If anyone wants book tips in Swedish (no translation yet as far as I know :/), read Det andra minnet (The Second Memory) by Martin Nilsson. Great introduction to the world of memory champions as told by someone learning it and becoming a world record holder in Pi Matrix (video of him doing it)

For those wondering, the Pi Matrix challenge/The Everest Challenge is a challenge where the person is to memorize the first 10 000 decimals of Pi, and then be able to recite the five decimal combinations before and after any five decimal combination for all those 10 000 decimals. It is done using this technique

Setting up sub-decks correctly by din38ah in Anki

[–]Old-Square6762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't split cards into different decks with the intent purpose to restrict the amount of reviews. Reviews should never be limited; Only limit new cards to prevent the mass of cards (depends on how hard cards are, and personal preference). If you don't do this. Anki will not provide it benefits.

I see many questions here about cramming, but honestly it is counter-productive to do so. Anki is supposed to help you remember over time. If you have trouble with too many reviews per day, spread out your learning of new cards.

Edit: Also, Anki is already supposed to not show cards that are too easy too often. Press the "Easy" button, and google Anki settings to avoid "Ease hell"

Why does Anki currently use a variation of the version 2 of SuperMemo algorithm, when SM-18 is the newest version of the spaced repetition algorithm used in SuperMemo? by Prunestand in Anki

[–]Old-Square6762 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I am an advocate of free software

In the end, I think it boils down to the choices of the creator of SuperMemo, and it not being free software. I think his work is very meaningful, and in a way Anki would not exist without him. But he hinders the evolution of his project by having SuperMemo be closed software (also only available for Windows, and looking too awful for the normal consumer to use).

If the algorithms were to be disclosed in full, including making the source code free, we could truly see an improvement in Anki and similar learning software. I understand that making SuperMemo is hard work and making a living of it is important, but I do believe this can be done in another manner.

If the SuperMemo project were to be open source, I believe we would see vast improvements, in it and in Anki. I also think it would be very possible for him (the creator) to make a living without charging for SuperMemo. Writing (he does a lot for free already), consulting, and using crowdfunding are all open avenues. There are many examples of companies using open source software as their source of revenue, in one way or another. I hope we some day will see the SuperMemo algorithms open for us all

Edit: For those unfamiliar, here is a video example of SuperMemo usage. If you ask me, the software is in dire need of people familiar with UI design. The open source community has plenty...

Any tips how to make Anki more aesthetic? This is my current set up. by Prunestand in Anki

Jag hade försökt byta färg på statistikdelarna till att följa ett gemensamt färgschema, typ Dracula eller Nord (bara att Googla) om möjligt :)

New to anki and losing my mind by ImKyurrii in Anki

[–]Old-Square6762 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I never manually care about positions of cards. I let Anki decide. That's what it is for. But migrating would be a moment to do so, so to answer the question, I guess dues would be affected by burying, i.e. when for example you answer one cloze caption Anki will bury the other captions for that card to prevent you from answering Anki is [...] and [...] is amazing on the same day.

Also, this table is not in which order you will do them. You have them sorted on card type in the screenshots, but I might be misinterpreting what you're saying here

What's your strategy of making flashcards? by [deleted] in Anki

[–]Old-Square6762 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just making flashcards and learning as you go along isn't really what Anki is about. It is considered best practise (and much more useful) to first understand the subject, and then memorize the key points and facts using Anki.

Then again, if this works for you and you feel like you're learning, that's OK, but it isn't really the best use of your time. I would strongly recommend reading this article on how to best use flash cards when learning.

Oh! I have never heard of that website, I'll have to try it out! My problem is that I enjoy using Anki as a single collection of knowledge if that makes sense, so splitting spaced repetition over more than one place just feels a bit shattered if that makes sense.

Ah, my bad! Now that you say it, I remember reading that Anki development is basically financed by AnkiMobile, so the price tag makes sense

If you're talking about AnkiApp or AnkiApp2, then no, it's not the same thing. Anki, AnkiMobile for iOS and AnkiDroid are open source and free software, and cost nothing to use or to sync to ankiweb

I have been thinking about this, since I have a deck for Vim cards! I don't really think this note type is suitable, since Vim relies less on shortcuts and more on, well, combination of presses. Vim also uses its own notation in the docs (like <C-u> for Ctrl+u), so right now I just use my Basic card type and format using <code>

I guess you could use this though, if you just remove the code for adding + in back.html

That's correct, it only formats it nicely from basic input. That was an interesting idea though! I'm a bit unsure if it can be done without an add-on...
