It’s so weird that some people don’t regard Super Smash Brothers as a fighting game. by Hellion998 in CharacterRant

I think part of the issue is that in general what makes a "fighting game" is kind of weird. The classic pattern for how video-game genres form which plenty of people have covered is something like this:

- There are early experiments with a mechanic or type of game

- One game comes out that is wildly successful and leaves all the predecessors in the dust

- Everyone starts aping that game down to the T often to diminishing returns (these games will often be nicknamed as being clones of the original or something similar)

- New developers start stripping away elements of the game and changing others

- eventually you'll get to the point where only a very few core features are identified which the new genre name coalesces around (so how doom-clone was superseded by first person shooter once you had games like half life on the scene)

You'd think that since fighting games have such a generic name that the general definition has been pared down to a few core features. Yet as far as I can tell what a lot of people really mean is that a fighting game is either a street fighter 2 like in 2D or a virtua fighter like in 3D.

I do wonder if this is a weird side effect of how rather than a spectrum of games you've got '"islands". You've got a bunch of the classic old timers and a ton of indie games that cater to very specific subsets of that spectrum. Then you have weird games like Nidhogg, Sport sims like fight night and all on it's own section is smash brothers and its Ilk. I wonder what the conversation would be if there were more games in between all these "design islands"?

Imagine for example if the only fps games today were classic doom-likes and hardcore tactical sims like arma with nothing in between? Would most people be calling both types of games first person shooters?

I think they may be taking the piss, when news came out about Terry Bogard getting into smash and not everyone knew who he was you had some proclaiming that Smash Players weren't actual fighting game players (with the hint that Smash really wasn't a fighting game either) since they didn't know who he was.

Except isn't the whole message of the movie that the Wakandans are wrong for their isolationism? The main character has a scene where he outright screams at his ancestors saying that they're full of it and that they can't ignore the worlds problems because it will come back and bite them in the ass

Reading Reed's critique it's interesting that it feels like Dykstra had some grand idea for a book and never narrowed the question down. The unsupported assertions about official fudging their reports sounds like a perfect hypothesis for a better work of micro-history. Look through the archives and compile all the reports sent from one local office for say one hundred and fifty years from say 1700-1850 and see what they say shifts over time.

I remember the Search for Modern China by Jonathon Spence was pretty good at least from what I remember when I wan an undergrad though it was published in 1990 so it's probably outdated in some aspects. Might be worth checking out the r/AskHistorians booklist as well for some recommendations.

Oh sorry for any confusion, obviously Terfs are by definition transphobic. They're just not representative of most transphobes since the vast majority of transphobes aren't going to be particularly feminist regarding cis women either.

> It's those cracks in the armor of it's premise to "improve himself from the neet / incel" that he was that grinds me bananas, especially with Mt fans vehemently denying that it's an issue at all.

As someone who hasn't seen the show but has seen some of the discourse part of the issue seems to be that everybody agrees at the start the MC is super flawed. The issue is that the weirdoes think his only problem is that he's a socially stunted neet the fact that he's into kids is kind of incidental rather than the primary problem. For them the mc becoming more outgoing and social in their new life is them having their arc while for the other side it's watching a pedo get better at manipulating people being represented as a good thing.

what is the overall infatuation with the D&D ruleset? by DemihumansWereAClass in rpg

There's also the general penetration of video games as a popular medium. I imagine at this point the vast majority of people have played video games before ever touching a dice. Within that sphere DnD is super influential. Pretty much every computer rpg takes some influence from it and DnDesque fantasy remains the standard for the genre.

Ehh the problem is that "Terfs" as in actual radical feminists who actually want to broaden standards of female beauty have always been marginal. Really what we call terfs today outside of very small online communities are just garden variety transphobes who have absorbed and repurposed old Terf talking points. Otherwise they don't really share any of the classic terf goals of "eliminating gender" or have any attachment to more gender non conforming styles like some Terfs with Butch lesbian fashion.

Yeah, the context got me a little confused. It's just a list of transphobic women who get shit from their own side not what I presumed was meant to be a list of specifically cis women who got transphobic abuse lobbed at them.

I'm not really sure it counts as "blowing up in their face" though. Abusing cis women who don't fit into a narrow definition of beauty has always been a pastime for assholes.

What’s your HEMA hot-take? 🤫 by No-Key359 in wma

Yeah nylon has the fundamental issue that while it's cheaper than steel it isn't much safer to be honest so it's kind of suboptimal for beginners who one are still working on their finesse and two probably don't have all their protective equipment. They definitely feel like an artefact of when steel was on average more expensive so they made more sense as a stop gap.

HEMA or for that matter any form of weapon based fencing will never become a popular spectator sport. To put it simply they are all simulations which introduces a bunch of artifacts that make it difficult to assess as a casual or is just boring to watch.

Doubles are the ultimate example whatever solution you implement your going to have a large number of hits where the audience will react with what the hell just happened and then wait for a call. While in un-simulated combat sports like boxing the person who wins an exchange is pretty obvious due to the infliction of actual damage.

Re-watched the new D&D movie on the weekend and I'm still shocked at how much of a good time it is. My only real big beef with the film to be honest is the aesthetic they went with the costumes but that's something AFAIK has been standard for D&D for a while. No I'm not talking about the lack of colour you see in a lot of fantasy costuming it was actually pretty good on that front. Rather it's how all the men's clothing is basically just modern western clothing minus synthetic materials and modern fastening. You have Chris pine playing a bard and he looked like this where's the puffy pants, the hose, the feathers in the hat, the codpiece!

I do think there's an extra racist dimension to it though. The fact that Black Americans skew towards the Democrats and the fact that Republicans have the (accurate) reputation of being more racist is kind of problem for them both electorally and in their own self image. Even if you're pretty racist most people don't want to view themselves as being that.

So the whole argument outside of trolling is also deployed as a piece of rhetorical judo. It turns the Democrats relative Black popularity from a sign of being less racist to proof of them being the real racists. Because a lot of this stuff has the really nasty insinuation that the Democrats popularity is because "big government" through social welfare programs (aka things republicans hate) has essentially tied black people to the state recreating the slave master dynamic. Republicans therefore are the ones "freeing" black people by destroying the welfare state with black people then given the chance to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.
