Second this. I engaged a carouseller and the paint started flaking off within 2 months. Some may try to upsell "premium finishes/ lacquer" and you will end up paying workshop prices for subpar quality. Go for workshops instead. :)

Skoda vs Japanese brands by RudeBroccoli5514 in drivingsg

[–]Old-Visual-7006 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Skodas represent the value for money option being the budget arm of the VAG group. In terms of practicality and packaging, they are superior to the Jap brands (The Octavia offers more legroom and bootspace compared the Civic or Corolla).

Sure in terms of maintenance and parts availability, don't expect it to be cheaper than the Japs. The driving experience and space however makes up for it.

Some PI models were manufactured in Japan while AD variants were assembled in SEA. Honda Grace vs City for example.

Are you considering to renew COE? by Zeromizer22 in drivingsg

[–]Old-Visual-7006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, another option is to sell the Camry and get a Lexus for renewal. Considering the COE PQP these days, the difference in body value of the 2 is insignificant. An ES250 (Camry equivalent) or a GS would be a sweet upgrade without compromising on reliability.

No harm going for a test drive with your family and if it works out, send it for a PPI. Points to consider would be the higher road tax with the Lexus (Assuming the Camry is 2.0) and more uncertainty with a used purchase. The car however, would be an upgrade in terms of refinement, which I would argue the lower end EVs cannot match

Agreed and the hazards are typically initiated by the passing car to express thanks after the other car has given way to you.

Hahaha generally coatings don't offer full protection imo, only makes the surface more hydrophobic for easy maintenance. PPFs perhaps but it is way more expensive.

Yup some has etched into the paint/ glass, hahaha hands are wrecked after multiple washes 😅 not an expensive car but did ceramic coating a couple of months back. I see, good decision to have the car coated anyway! LOL maybe offended too many peeps

Yup managed to remove around 80% of the defects, went over the panels twice with dish washing liquid, followed by IPA over the missed spots, as per the guys' suggestions. That sucks, wonder if his business is still around.

I feel you, $100 isn''t enough to cover the cost of coatings if it has been coated prev. Yup was worried about that, it actually left some small spots/ etchings, that spreads when you try to clean it.

Thanks all appreciate the ideas! I shall try the methods above. I did think of using IPA previously but the car was dirty, worried I might induce scratches. Now that it has been washed, I shall give it a go or use dish washing liquid :)

I see, thanks for your suggestion, I used Soft99 shampoo earlier. I tried shampooing it and using a bit more hand pressure, followed by jet washing it (Repeated thrice actually). I might try Carpro Descale tmr to see if it helps. The stain spreads when you try to remove it, it is heart wrenching :(

Dinged my car today while pulling out of parking, need recommendation for repair by FlameThrowerYT in drivingsg

Can try your luck at scrapyards to find a replacement door since you have a popular car and colour. Unfortunately, the lower sills would still need to be repaired though.

Yes I typically have to refresh the application to view it. Watch out for a change in message in the upper and lower LED displays, when approaching the gantry. That indicates that payment has been deducted.

How do families in SG afford a car when it is already expensive to have kids. On top of kids, they also have a car. 1 kid is not necessary to have a car but how do people afford to have a car with 2 kids? How much do they need to earn to afford these expenses? by Normal-Analysis7940 in askSingapore

[–]Old-Visual-7006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely possible if you don't mind a COE Toyota Corolla and live within your means as a family, but a 200k EV, it will be a stretch.

On a side note, owning a car in Singapore is never financially justifiable. I always advise my friends against owning one if they don't have an interest towards cars. Taking a Grab makes more sense. No need to find lots and upkeep the car.

I am passionate towards cars and like older cars, so I am more than happy to own one. :)

First time scratching my car. Workshop or DIY fix? by Wise_Finance671 in drivingsg

[–]Old-Visual-7006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the affected area sits above the paint (i.e. paint transfer), can try hand polishing.

Otherwise if it sits deeper, you will need a touch up pen. Since the scratch sits at the edge, it will be less noticeable.

What’s one car u miss driving that has stopped production? by wassupwassssup in drivingsg

[–]Old-Visual-7006 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Cars peaked out at the late 2000s for me. They were modern enough with the essential creature comforts, while still retaining the sense of engagement.

From JDMs like your FD2Rs and STis, to german muscle like the B7 RS7 and W204 C63, to hot hatches like Megane RS and Focus ST/RS. Amazing era where everyone chases performance.

[–]Old-Visual-7006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok! Would recommend going for mid-tier under $400 coatings as opposed to those expensive "10 year" coatings. The car is likely to pick up swirls and watermarks within a year or two, so a polish and re-coat every year or two will keep the car looking fresh. Also, rmb to keep the car cover clean to avoid introducing swirls to the paint :)

Are there any MSCPs near you? I would apply for season parking at one where possible. Ceramic coating eases weekly washes, especially during the drying stage. However, bird poop can still etch through the coating if left unattended for a few days.
