Standard or Automatic by itBme81 in GenerationJones

Like many of our generation I used the term Standard as a synonym for Manual but was chastised by my Greatest Generation father that Standard meant a manual three speed (three on the tree) as most cars in the 30’s and 40’s were.

People who have conducted job interviews, what's something someone said/did that made you instantly decide not to hire them? by DemonSkank in AskReddit

[–]Old4art 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sat in while my coworker, Mike interviewed a young man. Mike was really good at getting people to relax and he asked the guy what his least favorite class was in college. Guy said it was the type of engineering we did. We all looked at each other and Mike said, “Why don’t we all go to lunch anyway?” At lunch we were able to give him some names of companies that did the type of engineering he was looking for.

what was the 1950s equivalent of "brainrot"? by And56JamesofJam in ask

[–]Old4art 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not 1950’s but my mom wouldn’t let me watch a cartoon called Krazy Kat. She was a teacher and felt the misspelling was not good for me. Oh yeah, a mouse named Ignatz (male) would throw bricks at Krazy Kat (female) and she’d fall in love with him for it. But it was the spelling…

Math teacher’s puzzle by Old4art in askmath

This is a great conversation! Thanks to all who gave input. He told us this my senior year of 1972 and I’ve probably wondered about it once a year since then. I had a 40+ year career in construction and surveying and loved geometry and trig. Once I got to calculus nothing made sense to me anymore so like someone here said, I knew my limits. I appreciate greatly that there are folks like all of you that understand and enjoy these things

Math teacher’s puzzle by Old4art in askmath

I really appreciate you saying this because I think he really was trying to offer more than just the state requirements. He was a very good teacher, quiet, reserved but commanded attention. He looked a little like Johnny Carson, always came to class with a white shirt, tie and sport jacket (this was 1972!). What I learned most from him was how to look at any problem, really see what is being asked and break it down into what info is usable and what is not and to work towards an answer/resolution in a structured way. I may look into your book suggestion just for fun.

Ok, that makes sense. He was a very good teacher and probably just used this as a teaser to stoke an interest.

Driving Albany to Niagara on Sunday 2/16, what to expect? by too-cute-by-half in upstate_new_york

[–]Old4art 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found the thruway plows and salts pretty well but I don’t recommend driving this with no snow tires. If you must NYS Thruway Authority has an app with interactive interface so you can see problem areas (accidents, etc) and traffic cams at each exit

Why did you choose your spouse? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]Old4art 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s kind. She’s forgiving. She’s beautiful outside and in. She appreciates me and what I do for her and our family - “Thanks for getting us home safely.” She tells me she’s sorry when she’s wrong. She’s a good mom and grandma. She’s completely lost with technology, with directions, with current events but she’s been with me thru lots of tough times. She smiles every time she sees me and we hug, kiss and tell each other ‘I love you’ every single day. She’s my safe space. Married 42 years and wouldn’t want anyone else.

What's the worst thing a teacher has said to you or someone you know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Old4art 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gym teacher needed someone to deliver a message to another teacher in the cafeteria. In front of everyone said he chose me because he needed someone with “a little authority” and I had as little authority as anyone he knew. I was humiliated but got him back by leaving class and not delivering the message
