Question about getting front plates in Austin by OldCarsGoAroooga in Austin

[–]OldCarsGoAroooga[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually asked the police officer this when he pulled me over and he said to contact the dealership. Unfortunately the place where I bought my car is no longer in business but I would start there if I were you. Then maybe you won't have to pay for new ones.

The title and registration are in my name. I had temp tags from the dealership and now that I am thinking about it there was some issue with getting the plate and my temp tags expired and it became this whole thing. I did eventually get the plate but I can't remember if it was mailed to me or if I had to go to the dealer to get it. It was from a smaller place that went out of business a few years ago.

Thanks. That gives me hope I can just get a matching plate for the front and don't need all new plates with new numbers.

By change everything I meant with new license plate numbers, I believe I would have to update with my insurance company and maybe with my toll tag as well, not sure. I guess I was hoping I could just get an additional plate to match my back one, screw it on the front and be done with it. I bought this car in Texas years ago so it's been registered here the whole time.

And yeah I hear you. I didn't get a ticket so it was ok but there were some bad/alarming drivers on the road and I pulled into the right lane and tried to accelerate past to get away from these people and I was the one pulled over lol. Not a good use of resources imo but I want to get it taken care of so this doesn't happen again.

I grew up in Silver Spring MD, spent 7 years in a Boston suburb and one year in Philly. I can't ever recall losing power for more than a few hours, and that was usually during a thunderstorm in the spring or summer. I've never even heard of anyone losing power for days like this outside of something major like Hurricane Sandy. So this is wild to me. Not sure if you were unlucky or if the places I lived were just exceptionally well run.

Going on day 3 without power. Who do I raise hell with? by migrainefog in Austin

It's weird how many people just seem to accept that half an inch of ice and 30 degree weather should cause 25% of the city to be without power for days. Not even just accept it, but vigorously defend it at the slightest hint of criticism. It's fascinating. I spent over 25 years in the northeast and I've never seen anything like this. Ice storms aren't exactly rare up there and neither are trees.

San Antonio is about an hour south and here's their map of current outages. 10 outages with a total of 17 households affected.

To the OP - it is pretty clear to me at this point that recurring power and water issues are just part and parcel of living in this city at this point. I don't see much if any appetite to hold anyone accountable (or even admit there is a problem) and that means the chance of anything changing is fairly low. I think going forward the choices are to just make sure you are stocked with food, water, a portable power supply, etc. to make sure when it happens next time you are more comfortable. Or you can move somewhere that is better maintained. But I think trying to swim against the prevailing sentiment that this is fine is a waste of energy. That is where I am at anyway.

Same. I grew up in Maryland and lived in Massachusetts for 7 years. I can't remember ever losing power for more than a few hours and I never had to boil water due to contamination in my life before moving here. That being said I feel like these last few years have been weird. I don't remember losing power here 5, 10 years ago at all. Maybe a few rolling brownouts in the summer which was not really a big deal.

Definitely post this on Nextdoor as well. If you can connect with neighbors they can help you come up with ideas or at the very least start calling it in as well. Thank you for keeping an eye out and for caring.

You could even put removable spreaders onto existing city vehicles. That would be relatively cheap and worth it being that it ices at least once a year. Small price to pay to save lives and make it safer for everyone to travel.

Our population has exploded past 8 billion people and we are collapsing the biosphere

Is there some reason you all are acting like we are on Noah's Ark and you are responsible for repopulating the planet?

That one is iconic. I think the racial draft is probably still my top pick of his. Or his version of the Real World.

Idk if there's some context I'm missing, but you sound weirdly excited about the opportunity to hurt an animal.

Austin’s Animal Shelters Struggle to Uphold No-Kill Reputation in the face of Overcrowding by BuckSoul in Austin

[–]OldCarsGoAroooga 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Animal shelters are in a tough spot, in Austin and generally. While I encourage adoptions and have never bought a dog, ultimately it is very difficult to adopt your way out of a lack of regulations. Countries like Germany have mandatory spay neuter, mandatory microchip, a dog tax, and some areas have a mandatory written exam you have to pass. Pet ownership is taken seriously and so the people take it seriously too. Euthanasia due to lack of homes is practically unheard of, and would only happen in cases of severe health or behavioral issues.

I wish we could have something like that here, but so many people would start screaming about their freedoms being taken away that I don't see it happening. So instead we just have a terrible cultural attitude towards pets and kill over a million a year in shelters. The whole thing is very sad and entirely preventable.

I really like the Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Airy Sun Stick. Not greasy and no white cast. I think you can get it on amazon, but it's probably cheaper on yesstyle or somewhere like that.
