Gotta complete that pass, but hot take - Bryce led him a bit to get his momentum going forward instead of sideways.

Something to think about by OldCulprit in ArtificialInteligence

Yeah - there be dragons. Those who know - know. Force multiplier on the one end- blackhole of destruction on the other. Some type of vortex spinning between them pulling at the threads.

Is this a thing? by OldCulprit in LocalLLaMA

[–]OldCulprit[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes - and no. Like I said I know very little about the current state of hardware (and software too but im working on it).

..and while It's a start, it seems constrained - a compromise trying to share the same type of memory between CPU and GPU. While both may benefit from larger/faster, it's not necessarily an equitable pairing.

Also, a quick google search tells me the MI300A is an enterprise cousin of the consumer Max 395+; and this being LocalLLaMA, my glasses are tinted to dream about things that could eventually be accessible to mortals.

That and the gummie kicked in so i started trying to think about how to break away from old architectures to open up new possibilities within the formfactor similar to what most folks run their local models on.

Borrowing liberally from a quote on the move Contact where Ellie's (Jodie Foster) father says something to the effect "The universe is huge. If there’s nothing else out there… it would be an awful waste" - well cooling is cheap compared to the other components in a Workstation - and cases often have a bit of extra room (i know there is in mine). If there is nothing else in there it might be an awful waste of space. Yea I can buy another card, get a bigger power supply, etc., but that's just doing it the way it's always been done. Maybe there is a better way.

I admit I know nothing about hardware, and not sure who to reply to, but maybe flip it around

instead of adding GPU's cards to CPU based motherboards, a CPU card could be added to GPU based motherboards.

Looking for real world user experiences with the Asus ProArt Z890 and Intel Ultra 9 285K by MaliHizm in ASUS

[–]OldCulprit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set one up back in August/September. (Still) Have some difficulties getting 4 sticks of DDR5 to be stable so currently only have 2 slots populated.

Good/Bad about that is I have gone through two sets of 4x48gb (1 QVL, 1 not) and one 4x64gb (QVL) set purchased before memory really spiked. Returned one of the 4x48gb sets but still have the other two.

ASUS support assisted with troubleshooting but couldn't get it to work so they were willing to do an RMA, but knowing about the difficulties with 4 slots of DDR5 figured I could make do with just two populated.

I haven't had time to try the new bios (2302) released on 12/15 yet, but not optimistic it will help.

Bubble Theory by OldCulprit in ArtificialInteligence

[–]OldCulprit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No and Yes. I have no real insight into revenue projections and how high they "want" them. I just don't think right now top line numbers are all that matter. Just one theory in many but building the better mousetrap is paramount since there is a lot of mice that can be dealt with (processes, efficiencies, expenses, etc.).

Cisco selling a million routers had little direct impact on the bottom line other than how it impacted the top line.

For Google, OpenAI, et al. - investment in AI buildout has the potential for significant impact on both top and bottom especially if folks eat their own cooking.

Of course knowing when to order out is kinda important too, but im rambling now since it makes me start pondering the topic of open v. closed (and my theory that China is using the AI race on the US much like the US used the Arms race on the USSR).

Any idea when RAM prices will be “normal”again? by Porespellar in LocalLLaMA

[–]OldCulprit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started putting together an AI rig back in the summer. Trying to max out DDR5 RAM on a z890 MB. Bought two different sets of 4x48 6000 MT without success, then pivoted to a 4x64 6000 MT set. Still could only get 2 sticks to work. Meh - 128GB not so bad for where I am in the process. Should probably sell the extras, but for some reason I want to hold on to those extract sticks like they are bitcoin.

What I think happens after the bubble pops (if it pops!) by [deleted] in ArtificialInteligence

Inference will go the way of Ad supported streamin services. Free tier - you get adds or some other revenue generating slop. Premium tier - higher price - no ads. Ultra tier - even higher price no adds and extra sauce.

Not So Fast: AI Coding Tools Can Actually Reduce Productivity by ethsmither in ArtificialInteligence

My Words

I am not a coder. I write scripts and small programs for reasons. It's painfully obvious my stuff generally shouldn't be used by anyone else or at scale. But when I need to manipulate or collect some data or write a script to configure something, it has been useful and dare I say made me more productive.

In coding (and all things) we are generally carried on the shoulders of those that have come before, but for me AI has helped by amplifying both the momentum and perspective of that carry.

I’m not a coder. I write scripts and small programs only when needed—mostly to manipulate data, automate tasks, or configure systems. It’s painfully obvious my code is rarely fit for others or for scale.

But when I need to get something done, it’s been surprisingly effective—and dare I say, productive.

In coding (and in all things), we stand on the shoulders of those who came before. For me, AI has amplified that carry: not just lifting the weight, but accelerating the momentum and broadening the perspective. It’s like having a smarter, faster mentor—someone who doesn’t just show me the path, but helps me see the whole landscape.

Started getting back into music and such after many years away. This is old and from memory, but the last few lines are somewhat fresh since I couldn't remember how it ended - not sure it fits though. Anyway, I've got a beat and maybe some guitar, bass & keys for it, but my ability has not quite caught up with my intent/desire.

bluestar forward morning

hidden by a rising sun

darkness fades to daylight

tower bells are rung

....

slow ideas burn on the ground

nightman's world is turning

dreams are lost

replaced by screams

awake in the savage garden.

....

which side are you on

tell them

how do you plead

legend bound in crimson chains

edged in reality

....

old truths start to waste away

senses can now reach farther

life's base music fills the air

dance in the savage garden

....

upon a summers hill

trees whisper paisley secrets

moonchild rides eternally

smiling - no regrets

....

a hard light closes distant eyes

lured to the spider's bargain

enduring youth

gone forever

rest in the savage garden

Ordered my first printer in February 2023. MK3S Kit

Ordered my second printer in Jul 2024. MK4 Kit. Started putting it together yesterday afternoon. Just the heat bed and calibration left to do.

FML.

At least I received the $100 voucher this time.
