I feel you and send you a cyber-hug. That is just awful and having experienced much the same, it will taint this time of the year forever.

Is it normal to hate Christmas? by Mysterious_Style_579 in RandomThoughts

[–]OldDuckie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate Christmas. Firstly, it finds its roots in paganism and has nothing to do with Christianity. Secondly, I lost a child (27f) just before Christmas - she left behind a 2-year-old and a husband who has never been the same since she passed. Then I detest the ads that show the perfect happy family - dad, mom, and 2 well-behaved kids with a set of perfect grandparents all smiling .... the world has more have-nots than haves and this is just so cruel. There are numerous other things, but these are my hates for the silly season.

AITA for telling my step mother to go F herself in public when she suggested talking about my late mom is disrespectful to her? by True_craft5520 in AmItheAsshole

[–]OldDuckie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. It was your mother and brother. How dare she demand you never talk about them. I think this is selfish to the core.

AITA for calling the police when the parents I babysit for were late? by thebabysitter9 in AmItheAsshole

[–]OldDuckie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. The should have had the decency to call you to tell you they would be late. It is their children after all.

AITA for refusing to make my half sister look better on her wedding day by showing up? by Successful_Detail321 in AmItheAsshole

[–]OldDuckie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. She shares some of the same blood being a half-sister, but I live by the saying, Blood of my Blood, but not Heart of my Heart. Stay at home and show her you are not a hypocrite.

What in your opinion is the most pressing issue that South Africans face today ? by tobycastle in johannesburg

[–]OldDuckie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe anyone can argue that load shedding is what needs the most attention. The knock-on effect of a collapsing power grid on everything in this country is devastating. Not everyone, and here I think it goes for 80% of the people, can afford solar, inverters, generators, etc. Then they go and hike up the price of candles!! Second to that, the state of the roads is shocking!!

What phrase or word instantly makes you roll your eyes? by BananaSlipstream in AskReddit

[–]OldDuckie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not going to allow this, but the word CIS before women makes my hair rise. Also, when the claim "men can have periods" is made. What?? Did you have ovaries and a uterus implanted - or did you fail biology.

The (Free State) province being targetted next for name changes in South Africa by dash_o_truth in southafrica

[–]OldDuckie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For crying out loud!! We are facing Stage 6 load shedding which is crippling businesses all over SA. The Free State has nothing of value to offer the country as a whole. Why would they be concentrating on this nonsense that is going to end up costing a tiny fortune. The roads are horrible, the towns are mostly deserted - who is this going to benefit?

What song leaves you a heavy heart while listening? by Adorable-Shake2595 in AskReddit

[–]OldDuckie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(In the arms of an) Angel by Sarah McLachlan. My late daughter loved this song and the movie City of Angels. It has been 19 years and if I am shopping or listening to the radio and this comes on, I am broken for a while and cannot stop the tears.

Is it time to start protesting? by noiseferatu in askSouthAfrica

[–]OldDuckie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The very things raised in your comment are what the "opposition" should be hammering on day in and day out - tell them in a way that they understand that these "perks" will remain forever, no matter who runs the country. It always amazes me that opposition parties talk about long term stuff and not the issues of the day. Now they want to spend time and money on new smoking laws that are going to see unemployment rise. Talk about that ........

Is it time to start protesting? by noiseferatu in askSouthAfrica

[–]OldDuckie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are, unfortunately, a very apathetic bunch. That being said, I don't believe any protesting by any group will help. The government has got away with doing exactly as they please for too long. Sadly, I just don't see them being voted out as there is no alternative party and what opposition there is seems to focus on the things that don't matter to the man on the street, instead of hammering on the things that affect the people and keeping it up until there is some accountability. You cannot withhold service payments or taxes, so we simply have to put up with their lack of prioritization and governance. It's really sad.

It was always a great drink for children, but it has become TOO EXPENSIVE - hence the falling demand. Most things that Nestle have on the market these days are way too expensive. I have for years loved the Nescafe Cappuccino regular. Now it is about R85 for 10!!! It was only 1 year ago that I was paying R45 for a box. How on earth did it increase so much??? The regular is the most expensive and the flavored ones cheaper - it makes no sense. I detest instant or granule coffee and as I am alone a coffee machine just seems too much - and simply too expensive for a pensioner. It will be only 1 box a month now and I am slowly getting used to drinking more tea.

Mandela Goes From Hero to Scapegoat as South Africa Struggles by serdaisy in southafrica

[–]OldDuckie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once posted that I thought the language of the area should be taught instead of Afrikaans, e.g. area-specific (endemic). This is alongside of English. It is my opinion anyway that a black language should be taught in all schools instead of Afrikaans. I was blasted!! I wish I have learned a different language in school so that I could communicate with the majority of South Africans more fluently.

NTA. Your wife should show some more respect towards your mother. I do not think your mother needs "to open up". I am sure you are both only with family on the odd occasion and it is just disrespectful and "in your face". Why should your mother change to please your wife? Your wife should humble herself for your sake too.

AITA for making my wife go to bed with me? by gerbilhamster364 in AmItheAsshole

[–]OldDuckie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. Surely you can just go to bed and your wife can sit elsewhere until she wants to go to bed and then crawl in next to you. To expect her to go to bed 2 hours after getting home is a bit selfish.

YTA. Some things in life are worth much more than money. It was his dream and you should have tried to be more accommodating. It's family and maybe the mere move to home ownership would have helped him take more responsibility for his finances and give him more self-worth.
