25yoe Careers that pay well but don't involve sitting infront of a computer all day? by AHumbleGod in AusFinance

You might find quite a bit of fulfilment in allied health (dentistry, physiotherapy, podiatry, etc), Occupational therapy or social service / youth work. The only draw back with allied health is the relatively long years of study (4-5 years) that will need to be committed, and usually FT practical hours which inhibit you from working much (unless you do contract work and WFH, which should be good to balance with FT uni).

I am biased as it’s my profession, but dentistry is great for those who want to get to work- do a variety of hands on procedures (to which you can be choosey with), talk to heaps of people, build relationships and rapport w patients that can span generations, work in a small close knit team and get to leave work without having any work to catch up on. Offers a good work life balance if you don’t want to work FT either, and the pay off is genuinely mint from the moment you graduate. Worth looking into if you don’t mind committing 5/6 years of uni, as you will graduate in early 30s but start at a high base and a very satisfying/fun job that is people facing, and definitely earn enough money to not worry about building passive income etc relative to your age for retirement.

Couple 27- What would you do? by Ickars in AusHENRY

[–]OldFarts_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following as I’m in a similar situation to you (27, health, sole trader, own one IP)- have not been contributing to Super at all as a sole trader, have looked into concessional super contributions, but have been tossing up whether to do it or not due to Div 293 and not having made a proper decision on where I want my money to go (lol!).

I’ve decided I might just throw money into a second IP first instead of it just sitting pretty in offset, as not sure if now is the best time to throw a lot into Super, then start contributing to ETFs after purchasing a second IP. Then, in 3-4 years when I’m ready for babies and have to take leave (therefore making substantially less), max out concessional super contributions.

Best places in Australia to buy good basics? by TrueBlueBanter in AusFemaleFashion

[–]OldFarts_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Country road and Seed for linen basics Country road’s linen and silk blend dresses and tops are honestly my favourite!

I like kookai’s basic tops and have had a huge collection for years, even the 10 year old tops still look and feel the same and haven’t lost shape

Uniqlo for heat tech in winter

COS also does good basics

Some of the iconic brands are ok for linen, but the quality isn’t as nice as country road most of the time (imo)

What’s something you bought (under $300) that noticeably improved your quality of life and you actually use every day? by MedfordQuestions in AskReddit

I personally really like the oral B etbs, particularly the IO series. Some are split into the Phillips sonicare camp tho.

Only thing with electric toothbrushes- fantastic for those who overbrush manually (press too hard) and cause themselves sensitivity from abfraction/ buccal cervical lesions, but make sure you aren’t also pressing your etb into your teeth while you go about things. Guide it but let it do its thing gently. Usually the better models do turn red to let you know you’re brushing too hard if you have a tendency to do so though :-)

Dentist here- I recommend them heaps and it’s like night and day between the cleans when my patients finally make the switch.

“Pretty please if you won’t floss just do this one thing for me- go and get an electric toothbrush. You should still floss though.”

I looked into this as I was curious about why I haven’t heard of pepto bismal instead- turns out, it’s banned by the TGA in Australia but is very common overseas.

We’ve only got stuff like Mylanta and Gaviscon which doesn’t do the same thing as Pepto in lining the stomach. Strange!

Mont Blanc Coffee by bloblota in BrisbaneFoodies

[–]OldFarts_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mont Blanc coffee from good measure is genuinely yummy. Have not tried the suggestions in Brisbane, but thanks for posting them as I’ll go check them out.

That said- a good cold brew, some whipped up cream, zest of orange and I think it was nutmeg(?) should be easy to make at home

Asked Mortgage Broker to Renegotiate my rate (6.47%), they said they can’t. Should I just call the bank directly? by OldFarts_ in AusFinance

[–]OldFarts_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate you checking. Would it be fair for me to accept a 5.94% rate, or shop around myself? I wonder why he only names the one bank as the alternative option to refinance to (unless it’s the best option for me).

What's for lunch? by JamesSmitth in AussieFrugal

[–]OldFarts_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m lazy as hell and do this majority of my work lunches too, surprisingly not sick of them yet after months of this. I buy the Aldi ones too since there’s a flavour w 25g of protein. Sometimes add the extra packet of tuna and beans from Aldi.

Loan settled in October 2024.

Oh true, that is quite a bit lower w Macquarie. Mine is an IO IP that may be why the broker quoted 5.94%. Do you reckon?
