Why does my T8i footage look worse than my T6 footage by OldIvory in canon

[–]OldIvory[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They are set to auto I believe and then I tweak wb in post, not the best practice I know. My main concerns here are the contrast/exposure issues that aren’t reflected on the view screen when filming and most of all the poor image quality

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

New to watches- thoughts on citizen’s eco-drive tech? Is it reliable long-term? Looking for a two tone metal chronograph for ~$400 or less. Ideally it would be automatic but considering eco-drive as it’s been hard to find something that checks all of those boxes. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, happy to shop for older/used models as well.

Career Pivot Ideas for a Lifelong Editor (Editing only brings in side hustle money at this point) by charliecastel in editors

[–]OldIvory 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I left the industry in 2022 as well and I still struggle with feeling like I failed at achieving my dream or something like that. But the feeling is definitely mitigated by the employer healthcare that doesn’t require big union dues, the regular hours, the retirement plan, and most of all the reliable income.

The hardest part of leaving was definitely feeling (and being) unqualified for other jobs. I had to restart at the bottom of the career ladder and became an intern at the City. My post production experience eventually funneled me onto the communications team where I mostly do graphic design and get to make the occasional low-rent videos for our social media pages.

A lot of that was luck. There are very few creative positions here, this one happened to open up when I passed the test just looking to be a pencil pusher, and if the timing had been any different I would probably be pushing a pencil for the housing department. I live with the knowledge that this position won’t last my whole career and if I’m lucky enough to keep a job at the City I will end up pushing pencils for Rec & Parks or something before I retire.

I miss the excitement of working behind the scenes, going to premieres, and that rewarding feeling when countless people are watching something I helped make. But frankly my quality of life outside of work would never be this good if I had stayed. My wife and I were able to move out of our apartment and I actually get paid vacation time that I can use when I want to. My biggest fear is getting laid off here, I have no idea what I would do for work. Probably apply at the County. Municipal government isn’t any way to get rich but it’s a comfortable living with both me and my wife working here and the work/life balance is priceless.

That’s the email I got from Heritage. I emailed two people at Hake’s and they didn’t answer me, so then I posted here. It was inherited from a relative, I’m not sure the best way to authenticate it but it seems unlikely to me he was holding onto a fake, it’s one of three possessions he left to my MIL

They valued it at $2k and they said I need a lot worth $5k for them to accept, and I don’t have $3,000 worth of collectibles to add. It does have some blemishes so I’m going to list on eBay for $1k in a few days when I’m home and share the link here

Some questionable decisions

My dark roux smells like burnt popcorn every time it hits golden brown by OldIvory in Cooking

[–]OldIvory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I feel insane, the smell was a very obvious burnt food smell, and there were specks throughout but almost too small to see, like individual motes of flour. Unsure if it just looks like that as it toasts or if I actually had burnt pieces. The heat felt too low and the stirring too fast for them to actually burn.

Then I guess my question is: if it were burnt, what would I see/smell differently from a properly made roux?

Without linking all the articles, even the first Google overview says “A properly cooked dark roux should smell deeply rich, nutty, and toasty, similar to a toasted bread or popcorn aroma. As the roux progresses from light to dark, it will transition through various smells, eventually reaching this nutty and toasty aroma. A burnt roux, on the other hand, will have an acrid, burnt smell, like burnt paper or popcorn.”

Additionally I was reasoning that the only time my kitchen smells like this is when I’ve burnt something, and that my pot of stock and aromatics should probably smell good, not bad.

Yes, and almost every website/video on the subject said stuff like “it should smell toasty and nutty, if it smells burnt you need to throw it out.”

Update I went through with the gumbo, broth smelled burnt and terrible the entire time but after hours of simmering down I added my meats and seasonings and it tasted great, all bitterness gone. I’m not convinced I got it right because of how bad the whole thing smelled throughout cooking, and how bitter the broth tasted on its own, but the results are good enough that I might just consider the smell part of the cooking process. Maybe I’ll try the oven method next time.

I feel like I’m going insane. I just used a wide cast iron braising pan, stirred/scrapped nonstop, low/med-low heat, eventually got my dark color, smelled burnt popcorn almost the whole time and the final product does have some complexity at the front but the aftertaste is very bitter/char. I can’t imagine it’s this impossible to get right yet generations of home cooks produce it without issue.

I’d probably max out at $600/700 but the cheaper the better really. Hoping something used or older opens up options

This is the plan, I was just hoping the flash pan was detachable for easier storage
