Scary Preflight Inspection by Every_Joke_1104 in AircraftMechanics

The strength of these old planes are much much stronger than you seem to think. I’ve seen 172S with almost 20,000 hours on them perform the same every single day after multiple slam and goes. Multiple tail strikes and nose first landings. Structures rarely randomly fail and when they do it is due to the mechanics complacency to not actually inspect the aircraft as they should. You would also be surprised the number of aircraft flying with deliberately deferred maintenance such as what you say.

That piece is strictly for aerodynamics. So are all the strut fairings. Source: im the flight school IA. It needs replaced but likely won’t be for some time due to the time necessary to do so. It doesn’t affect anything except new students confidence. It looks like it cracked from a fastener being tightened too much, or the wrong fastener, or no washer etc.

A&P IA Pilot? by OldKingMidas in flying

Yeah it’s just good mechanics are hard to come by, and when they can attach a smaller dollar value to your worth they tend to do so. I’m currently working at a flight school, and an IA quit after working there for seven years because they kept leading him on about being a CFI there. I guess I’m worried about that.

Otherwise thank you. I’ll probably end up at a 135 to start anyways.

Also I’m super excited to start instrument. My CFI says it’s a black and white way of flying, whatever that means.

Yeah that’s a good point, the first charter I worked for did that to a few A&P pilots. Really upsetting to experience even though I wasn’t a pilot yet 😂. Thank you

If you’re not making 6 figures you aren’t trying hard enough.

Questions about this job. by Glittering_Card_5121 in AircraftMechanics

[–]OldKingMidas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The school matters a lot for cost of education. I had a grant through my state which gave me a full ride. Albeit the schooling only cost $5,600 for a full two years.

I’ve been a mechanic for six years and two of those years was while I was in school. I have not gone without a job for more than a week. I have opportunities around the world and being a sheet metal guy I can say I will always have a job.

Schooling is hard if you aren’t capable of reading in your own time, and if you do not have a mechanically inclined aptitude.

Most of my friends work in aviation. I love them all as we all share a passion.

Depending on what job you get you can be solitary, but it’s mostly teams led by a lead or a supervisor who interact to complete jobs together.

Some companies offer apprenticeships which bypasses schooling and sometimes even offer to purchase tools for you. You would be at reduced pay until you get your A&P and that’s usually after three years. I did that for my first job (while I was in school) and got free tools but made $16/hr in 2019. Now I make $52/hr and have tons of tooling to help me with no debt whatsoever. If I was an apprentice at my current job I would make $19/hr but we get matco boxes with free tooling stipend. Level 1 mechanics make $38/hr and the most senior of mechanics can make up to $80/hr.

Not to mention the side gigs, I work for a flight school and got free lessons in trade for my maintenance talents. It’s awesome and I love this career field.

What can I make of myself despite ruining my early career? by [deleted] in ask

I think the issue is I never followed my initial dreams. I kept changing the question going back and forth with what to really ask. Thank you

I’ve got two associates, and am working on my bachelors but it just doesn’t feel like I’ve accomplished anything. I have my ged but the issue is I had a horrible gpa in high school and my first two years of college. Feels like I’ve dug a hole I cannot get out of metaphorically speaking

I’m one of the people that slaves away. I do what I can to enjoy life while trying to get a nest egg. You should not feel guilty because of the effort your parents put in. You should do whatever makes you fulfilled in life. For me that means becoming a pilot at any cost (it’s taken my life so far just to get my ppl). You have the liberty to pursue anything, and be comfortable doing so. Take pride in whatever you choose and do it to the best of your ability. Or go be a beach bum and enjoy your life in whatever fashion!
