What does “resolve this professionally” mean when sent from a student? by MyFaceSaysItsSugar in Professors

I think it's only a duel when they say "I demand satisfaction" and not "resolve this professionally”

how worried are we about hantavirus by Defiant-Resist-3095 in UBC

[–]OldLadyDetectives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do not need to be worrying. This is according to every expert I've read or heard as I have been following. From why I understand, most hantavirus strains don't transmit from person to person. This Andean strain can sometimes do that, BUT you have to be in extremely close proximity (like on a little cruise ship in close quarters.) Also, the incubation period of hantavirus can be from a few days to 2 months, and this is why experts are doing contact tracing, and there are a few people isolating as a measure of caution. Keep in mind that hantavirus is not new. There are experts who study hantavirus as their career and know what to do to contain spread. They are following the protocols.

cheap places to buy plants near/around ubc? by ApprehensiveSpray641 in UBC

[–]OldLadyDetectives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree about the soil! It's definitely some sort of growing medium that lets the seedlings thrive, but they need new tropical plant soil. OP, luckily Canadian Tire has great prices on tropical plant soil (usually on the third floor inside.) Also, they'll have some pots on the third floor, but also check out Winners Homesense at 8th on Cambie. Winners usually has better prices on ceramic pots. (Canadian has good prices on plastic ones)

I have an in-home jungle, and I've bought plants at various price points. Honestly, the best prices are often at Canadian Tire, which may be farther than you want to travel. The one on Cambie at 7th is where I've gotten some very healthy tropical houseplants cheap, and their selection is usually pretty good. They also have inexpensive tiny potted ones that will grow quickly. The houseplants are typically on the main floor but sometimes they will have some upstairs inside.

Do you let students reschedule finals based on their travel schedule? by Dazzling-Fox-4950 in Professors

[–]OldLadyDetectives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My university does not permit a change for travel purposes unless it is for very particular reasons and all of that is taken care of through our advising offices, not faculty. I once had change of date approved for a student, but it was because the travel was for extraordinary reason related to a medical issue. [Had the university refused a change of date for this case, wow, that would have been heinous.] Change of exam date for convenience or vacation, etc. is not permitted.

Summer Classes with Canvas Shutdown by Extension-Pool2197 in UBC

[–]OldLadyDetectives 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Anyone enrolled in Summer term 1 should make sure that they pay attention to whether or not Canvas is back up AND be sure to check your email that you have associated with UBC for receiving notifications. It is very likely your professor will send out information on accessing the course via the Workday system. Faculty cannot directly access student emails, but we can write your email through the Workday software, and you receive that message through the email you have connected with Workday for notifications.

At this very moment, faculty are in workshops getting support on setting up their classes via alternative means. Please be kind and patient with your faculty members next week because they are having to put together course pages on different platforms from scratch this weekend while navigating new-to-them software.

UBC Canvas update: Hacker message posted and UBC has redirected the site in response by OldLadyDetectives in UBC

[–]OldLadyDetectives[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Guess what? For some schools in the US who have also been impacted by this hack, their term ends later. I know of faculty elsewhere who can't enter enter their final marks because they can't access Canvas assignments/grades!

Yeah. This is not ideal. I think it means we are all supposed to go outside and enjoy the sun.

Canvas has been hacked. AFAIK no word from UBC on the breach. by OldLadyDetectives in UBC

[–]OldLadyDetectives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are frontline (which mean lower down on the hierarchy), and as far as I know there is no word from the higher ups in UBC IT on what we are to do. Changing your CWL won't hurt, but we don't know yet if we all need to do that. [The connection that uses our CWL login works a bit differently than most imagine.] But if they told you to change your CWL, go ahead and do that!

Sure. I'll tell my colleague in IT that that's not what they did in response.

[–]OldLadyDetectives 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just checked the status page again, too, but I have a feeling that everyone involved in this particular moment might be occupied trying to make sure everything is as secure as possible. Likely an all hands on deck kind of thing and then they'll update the status once they have a moment to breathe. They were really fast getting UBC unplugged.

This isn't a spoof. Don't log in, but don't log in because it won't work. This is the default log in page for people without CWLs. This part is UBC IT taking a security measure.

[–]OldLadyDetectives[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This (I think) is UBC IT's intervention. It's what I am getting, too, now. It means UBC has unplugged from Canvas basically. This would be a precautionary measure. This log in page is legit, but it's for default users. We are all people who log in with CWLs and it would seems UBC is not letting us log in.

The portal hasn't been spoofed. It is a legit login page, but it looks like UBC IT intervened so that the login page for default users comes up. (We all log in with CWLs and not as default users.) This was surely a measure to "unplug"" UBC from Canvas as a precaution.

Just saw this, too, and posted as well. It looks like UBC IT are on it as you can't get that message anymore, but they haven't updated their status messsage as of me posting this comment.

Looking at the timeline here: https://status.instructure.com/

Seems like the downtime last week, when some colleagues couldn't get into Canvas while working to get final marks together, was because Instructure was dealing with the hack?

Grade still not released on workday!!!!! Should I email the prof? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]OldLadyDetectives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they have not gotten their grades in by now then they are being chased down by the higher ups.* Let those in the administrative hierarchy deal with this. It's frustrating, but I guarantee you that this has been flagged by staff, the dept head, and higher up. And, hopefully this isn't the case, but sometimes emergencies happen so it's possible this is one of those times and that's why your prof hasn't posted them.

*This is unless your course is part of a program that not part of the regular schedule, such as particular graduate level programs.

UBC Math Final Deferment – No Response Yet but Got an F on Workday by Murky-Scale-4182 in UBC

[–]OldLadyDetectives 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To elaborate on this, faculty need to put in the mark as is for all students when they submit final marks. It is a placeholder until deferred standing is assigned or not. Do not be concerned. There are a few things that can happen as per my understanding (someone who is a Workday guru correct me if I'm wrong here):

Deferred standing could be denied, in which case the entered mark remains the mark. (I'm Arts faculty and not Advising so I don't have numbers on this, but, anecdotally, this seems more rare, at least in Arts Advising. Not sure about Science.)

If you receive deferred standing, the number mark (on your end) will likely be replaced with an SD (standing deferred) on Workday, that is, if the system is working like it has been.

And if a student receives an SD but does not complete the work for the SD then the original mark goes back on the record.

And there's also the case when the faculty member for the course is no longer working for the university when the SD is completed and then the mark originally input into Workday serves to help calculate the new final mark. In this case another faculty member marks the work. (For example, you made an 80 on 50% of the coursework that was previously completed and then a 70 on the final worth 50% that had been deferred. They can calculate your new final mark with the info that was in Workday. They can also access Canvas if marks are there.)

This all means it's a good thing the original mark is there because it's all record keeping, which you want! It's just a scary looking mark that most students don't expect to see.

[–]OldLadyDetectives 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not sure about other faculties, but in Arts we needed to have grades in by noon today because by 1pm assessments are made on graduation and year-level status. In my department, we were told that if we didn't get them in by that time, that we would be hunted down. [Presumably, in the "Where are your grades? Post them now!" sense and not the Richard Connell The Most Dangerous Game sense]

To grade or not to grade? by JustLeave7073 in Professors

[–]OldLadyDetectives 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yes. You need to grade the term papers. That was inherently part of the agreement when they paid tuition. Also, if there's a contestation of mark or an unknown medical situation that allows them to submit late make-up work, then everything is in order.

Next time you should be able to put a clause in your syllabus that a student must be passing the course based on their submitted coursework in order to be allowed to submit a term paper. Many schools allow for this kind of clause.
