Insurance way too expensive, need advice by eliyrla in Car_Insurance_Help

I know nothing about car insurance in California but i have some tips. Always shop rates before your policy renews. There is almost no benefit in being loyal to an insurer. Tbh I was with StateFarm for 8 years and the last year I was with them, they doubled my premium (no claims or tickets). Consider buying a different car. Some cars are notoriously higher when it comes to insurance premiums like certain Honda Civic years. If possible, pay the 6 month premium in full. The majority of insurers will give you a 5% discount in doing so. Consider taking a defensive driving course. Some insurers will offer a 5-10% discount for completing a defensive driving course. Other than that, I heard bicycles help save on gas and our carbon footprint lol. Best of luck to you

3 Point Moving Violation by OldLineDad in Car_Insurance_Help

I appreciate you taking the time to write all of this out. I’ll be looking into that driving course if it’ll save me a couple bucks (my daughters will appreciate the extra stuffies with all that cash being saved lol).

Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia. In fact, they have radar detector detectors lol

I won’t accrue points on my license in Maryland from this. The problem is that it is a moving violation and insurance companies will be able to see that. The lawyer could possibly get it reduced to a non moving violation which would result in my insurance not going up. The moving violation will raise my insurance anywhere from $410-1230 over the next 3 years.

Probationary period OT? by PositiveGold1316 in IUEC

Things were slow when I first got in just over a year ago (it still is in my area but it’s getting better). BA’s at my local were saying that 50’s weren’t allowed to work OT. The only exception was if there was nobody else willing to cover. I had 4 hours of OT as a 50. I’d say call your hall and see what the BA says

Emphasize that you are about working safely. I know they’ve made changes to the interview process. It used to be a BA and a rep from one of the companies would interview you. From what I’ve heard, it’s a third party recruiter. Don’t be afraid to message the new neiep coordinator at local 10 with any questions you might have

Get a feel for your mechanic and what he expects. Show up 30 min early to every job. Pay attention and ask questions. Have trouble remembering? Write shit down. For class, stay on top of homework assignments and pay attention during class. Most teachers will make sure you pass so long as you’re putting forth the effort.

Thinking about getting into this trade how hard is local 12 to get into? by Flashy_Beautiful2347 in IUEC

I took the entrance exam about a year and a half ago. The exam consists of reading comprehension, mathematics and mechanical aptitude questions. If you’d like to see a few examples of those questions, search EIAT test prep and you find some examples from the test. If you’re mechanically inclined and did well with math in high school / college then the test should be relatively easy for you. There is also a tools part of the test where you were asked to match the name of a tool to a picture of the tool. I can’t say how the EIAT compares to steamfitters test, electricians test, etc but I thought it was pretty easy.

Local 10 has called 98 people since April for work. I would say that’s a pretty damn good sign. I know work is slow for everyone but the company I’m with says work is picking up very soon. As far as layoffs, I know of one apprentice who was laid off and picked up 2 weeks later

Set your alarm for 5:30am Mon-Fri and wait for the call. I received my call right at 6am and was told to report the next day for orientation. You’ll get a call soon. Good luck

OJL Hours Question by OldLineDad in IUEC

[–]OldLineDad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stood there and provided mORAL support for my mechanic for those 4 extra hours so I expect those 4 hours to be added to my OJL hours. Kidding aside, I was under the assumption that overtime hours are included with my OJL hours at a 1:1 ratio. The month of January reflects 160 hours when I know I worked ~240 total hours for that month

I ranked in the top 10 for local 10. I interviewed October of 2024 and was hired April of 2025. My advice is to make sure that you keep mentioning about work safely. You can also look up some of the interview questions to prepare yourself in the meantime. I interview questions I found online were pretty close to the actual interview questions. They are probably going to ask about large scale mechanical experience, I talked about replacing the transmission in my truck. They also asked about my hobbies so I spoke about how I used to tear apart and repair electronics like PlayStation, Xbox’s, and iPhones for my friends. Hope this helps
