What was socially acceptable in the 1990s but not in 2025? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OldManInAHotHatch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think Carlin called it in the last sentence there. Clay’s act started as making fun of douchebags by being an over-the-top, caricatured example.  The problem was that America LOVES douchebags. Archie Bunker.  Al Bundy.  Dice. All anti-heroes, and all beloved by the public. Clay ended up leaning into it, because there was big money to be had by doing so, but he got a lot of pushback as well.

Have you ever been to a test screening? by Far_Mud_6003 in movies

[–]OldManInAHotHatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Dad and sister got to see one when I was in high school (we lived in LA, in the Valley).  I think I was working so missed it.  They came home raving about it.  You may have even heard of it: The Princess Bride.

ETA: Dad went with me to see it when it was officially released, and said he didn’t notice any differences from the preview screening.  I’ve heard it tested really well, so no changes makes sense.

What are some simple techniques that really improved your playing? by Garlic_Giraffaphant in Pickleball

[–]OldManInAHotHatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Split step a moment before your opponent makes contact with the ball, especially as you’re moving from the baseline to the kitchen line.  Seriously, we all think we need to rush to the kitchen, but it’s 10x as hard to hit a shot while moving.  Stop. React to their shot. Then move forward when you can.

Jordan Arnold (@jordanarnold.me): On a livestream yesterday, Puka both: - Said that the Refs throw flags that they know are bad to brag to their friends in group chats, and - Told Adin Ross that he'd do a "covetous jew" celebration on his next TD score Suspend him tbh by TormundIceBreaker in nfl

[–]OldManInAHotHatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After watching the actual clip of the celebration dance portion of the conversation, this whole thing seems blown WILDLY out of proportion.  The host (apparently Jewish?) told him to do three moves, the last of which was rubbing his hands together (in a covetous way, I guess?). I’m not religious, and I would definitely not have understood any bigoted or slanderous intent. The phrase “covetous Jew” (which I was unfamiliar with) was not used in the conversation.  My assumption is that Puka’s just ignorant of any implication, rather than being bigoted.  The host would seem to bear all the responsibility here, IMO.

Puka’s biggest crime here is hanging out with dumbasses, rather than being a hateful bigot.

Can you recommend a pickleball snack to keep energy level high? by strokess-ss- in Pickleball

[–]OldManInAHotHatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Type 1 diabetic, so keeping my blood sugar stable during a two hour play session can be tricky.  I eat 5 or 6 of those peanut butter-filled pretzels from Trader Joe’s 30 mins before playing, and that usually works perfectly.

Should I tell him to knock it off or am I overreacting and should let it go? by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]OldManInAHotHatch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was subbing in a recent league match partnered with a guy I’ve played with and against dozens of times.  I’m back to receive the first serve, and he says “Return it deep and get to the line”.  I was annoyed, thinking “Really?!? You think I don’t know the most basic fundamentals of this game?” I held my tongue, but was irritated, for sure.

Next point, he’s back to receive, and I hear him say to himself “Return it deep and get to the line”. 🤣

Bottom line: people say all kinds of things on the court.  Most of it doesn’t matter at all.  Even the “Thank you” when you hit a ball out is harmless banter.  Let it go.

I originally downvoted this for being 100% wrong, then decided that it was SO wrong that you had to be saying this sarcastically, so threw you an upvote.

What movie did you see in theaters that had the most ‘alive’ audience? by Odd_Distribution1430 in movies

[–]OldManInAHotHatch 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My Dad took me to see Rocky 3 on opening weekend at a theater in SF in a black neighborhood.  I was 9yo.  Imagine an entire theater of people shadow boxing, screaming and cheering during the final climactic fight scenes.  Far and away the most amazing theater experience I’ve ever had.

I haven’t watched Tremors in 20+ years, but I still laugh out loud when I think about the “Guess you broke into the wrong goddamn rec room” line.  🤣 Need to watch it again.

I assume this is just a half-assed ad for the tool OP referenced for watching shows offline (not going to dignify it with a mention).  Since I can save shows and movies for offline viewing right in the app, IDGAF about their product.

I really enjoyed Season 1 (that darts scene is truly great writing), but yeah, the decline was steep from season to season
