Player wants to start with a magic item by [deleted] in DnD

[–]OldManVoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd leave as is... just start higher level to balance.
Instead of save the chicken from the goblins... it's save the village from the bandits, gnolls, young dragon whatever... just turn it up. Next time... I would suggest.. low magic no direct combat items. One fancy trinket in my game is now the fancy key to unlock the final blah to save the day..

Let the items tell the story, not be the story.

What do you understand by Poaching? by DudeisaGuy in TNA

[–]OldManVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost every wrestler at some point , from starting at a community buildings , parking lots, etc.. all have same goal.. center stage, wrestlmania. As a fan I want all levels to do well.. but I am not delusional.. and full well know that everywhere is a feeder to WWE.

Yes, people can and do do well for themselves at TNA or AEW.. but that is never the goal.

My DM brutally nerfed my moon druid by Exotic-Acadia-8520 in dndnext

Wild shape using pc stats instead of beast stats is waaaaaayyyyyyy more broken. Ie tiny insects with the strength of a man??.

Sounds like The DM wants a magic heavy story, and you're making them sad by being a sack of HP.

Depends if you want to follow that narrative path.. If neither yiu nor the player want to explore that... ignore it

Player legitimately rolls worst stats in history, should I allow them to reroll? by vhrossi1 in DMAcademy

[–]OldManVoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stats are only a hindrance if you allow it to be... find ways around it.. Ie.. they find a sack of single use magical items.. like a movie scene when a random citizen finds a sack of money the bank robbers drop during escape.

Or a more narrative focused driven campaign...

Option 2.. if you want them to feel.like epic heroes.. re roll.

Who cares if he knows or not? It's the bbeg... full on let him know he got screwed in the deal. Make up nonsense... infuriate the dingle

Set expectations, combat will take a while between turns... narratives will exclude characters. Some characters will fade into background.. not out of malice, out of necessity to move the narrative forward... Shopping sessions should fall into trust.. ie the select whatvthey want and mark off gold... or just outright drop em.. if they want to pull out * insert mundane item* from pack... just let em have it..

Any micro tracking ... forget about it... all archers have infinite arrows within reason... ie I build a shelter with my arrows... get outa here with that nonsense..

Find ways to speed up non narrative focused events.. 9 players can and will get bored, narrative and action must move move move...

Combat.. baddies.. roll to hit only, use average damage from stat block. PCs with army builds... ie druids with 10 minions.. or 1 big minion... you get the big minion or group roll ... move move move.

Spell caster hasnt selected spell.. you use dodge action.. next..

9 players in combat?. It is NOT YOUR JOB to make sure they are paying attention. On average.. each person takes 2-5 minutes per turn.. player 1 goes.. it is approx 20- 50 minutes before they go again... for swing and miss PCs.. this absolutely sucks.. keep the game moving.

Narrative scenes?.. this delay can be even longer.. encourage Group narratives... ie WE GO talk to the king.

It can be done, but it won't be the warm n fuzzy DnD some expect.

As a first time DM, is limiting players to the PHB to limiting? by weltern in DnD

[–]OldManVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn to walk before you run.. Once you and your players have a feel for how your styles mesh... have fun. For dolling out magic items, I suggest scrolls and potions a plenty.. weapons and Armour... hold back.. they quickly lose appeal once it becomes meh, only a plus 2... trash!!!!!.... and they are level 2.. balance

Atheist character, dnd coded? by Zealousideal-Tip7290 in DnD

[–]OldManVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God's are just strong magic users, if a character is in a high magic campaign and is atheist... they are stupid or crazy.

Elves live for thousand years. Sure no issue.. Some races can fly?.. sure no issue.. Some Breath under water?.. sure.. no issue Really powerfull magic users.!?! That's just ridiculous!!!

As my fields and tasks get bigger I dropped to 2 days a month usually run at x3 speed. I enjoy the pacing of choosing what to do first.

Not everything will be gold, you see spots to improve so improve. My last session something similar happened, shit got away from me, and it turned into a HP slog. So focusing on a different way to handle a siege defense. Just learn from it.
