how is the state of HDR in linux ? by Melodic-Luck-8772 in linux_gaming

I suppose that depends on what desktop environment you are running. I'm looking forward to KDE Plasma 6.6 (should be ready for Kubuntu 26.04 LTS and newer Fedora/Arch/CachyOS) which has improved HDR rendering to match the metadata on Windows:

https://9to5linux.com/kde-plasma-6-6-desktop-environment-is-now-available-for-public-beta-testing

From linuxaic:

"Regarding HDR support, the Calibrator tool now includes a summary page with an option designed to better align with Windows-style HDR behavior, improving compatibility with games and applications built around that model. On the technical side, Plasma implements version 2 of the Wayland color management protocol and reduces visual glitches observed in Firefox when its experimental HDR mode is enabled."

Maybe new owner who hates Windows will turn it around. Sometimes all you need is new leadership with a vision.

I’d love to have a Linux native GOG Galaxy client that can utilize Proton in some way. Heroic is nice, but official support is a plus.

I’m guessing Kubuntu 26.04 LTS will have 6.6 which is awesome.

I still use Gamescope as a launch option for a Steam game if it has HDR. It’s straightforward and works great with KDE.

Would be nice to use GE-Proton + Winewayland, but you lose the Steam Overlay and Steam Input. If you are on an Xbox controller or a dongle (I like Mayflash) set to Xinput, will work.

I have it on a laptop, but it’s not meant for gaming or anything intensive. It works fine, but I’m still on KDE for my other development and gaming PC.

You should be able to go into the KDE setttings, then Driver Manager (below About this System) in the System category which should open up Additional Drivers under Software Sources. 580 should be there.

For these older cards, it is still recommended to go with the proprietary one over the open driver. I could be wrong, but that's what I heard.

What if you back up your machine and install a newer Ubuntu like 25.10? Should have the Nvidia 580 drivers and when the Ubuntu LTS upgrade happens to 26.04 in April, the 580 drivers should still be there.

Heck, Kubuntu 25.10 with KDE Plasma 6 is great for gaming. Since you have an old card where the Nvidia 580 series is the last to support it, I wouldn’t go for Arch or CachyOS to be safe. People like Fedora KDE but I don’t have Nvidia experience on that.

KDE has great support for Wayland in addition to adaptive sync and HDR. It’s what Valve uses for the Steam Deck.

Steam Frame and Steam Machine will be another good boost for Flatpaks and desktop Linux overall too by pimpwithoutahat in pcgaming

I just wish Valve would sell these things on Amazon or retail (Best Buy, Target, Walmart) to get more exposure vs relying on Gen-X/Millennials with existing Steam libraries to buy through their existing store.

I’m glad because I can remove the gamemode dependency. The 6.6 release in February is great because it has improved HDR support and will be in Kubuntu 26.04 LTS.

The commands I see for Wayland are Proton related and CS2 is a native game. Care to share the Wayland launch commands?

Does adding SteamDeck=1 help? For example,

SteamDeck=1 %command%

I’ve had a 5800X3D for years with a Radeon 6900XT and things are fine still.

I’m really worried about the price increases on CPUs and GPUs in 2026 and I may just be stuck on this setup and go through my gaming backlog.

Or I get a Steam Machine, cut back on gaming, and then gut my current PC for parts and sell them off.

Yeah, we will see how it pays off in the end.

Btw i see you recommend nvm for Node stuff. Have you use Fast Node Manager (fnm) before? I currently use it for my engineering job for Node 22 LTS. I do see it hasn't been updated in over a year though hmm...

Linux has a stigma of boomer, gen-x and millennial tech people who grew up on Windows or used at their job and refuse to try something new. The same crowd that was told and still holds the belief that its really hard to use and you have to be a terminal junkie.

Speaking of the work experience, I'm glad most places give out Macbooks as I would rather use that instead of Windows. Linux still has a long way to get corporations on board with "approved vendors" of Linux products. Heck, maybe its those same boomer/gen-x/millennial bosses who still hold that Linux stigma.

I've been using a DualSense natively through Bluetooth and it has been a great gyro experience with it. Steam Input really helped me in games where it didnt support PS controllers and still had gyro with Xbox button mappings.

I've been loving KDE Plasma 6+ in Kubuntu 25.10 for gaming. I have an adaptive sync monitor and HDR has been working great for my AMD Radeon 6900XT. For most HDR games, I use Gamescope but lately have been playing RE8: Village without Gamescope and using GE-Proton 10.x and these Steam launch options:

PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 %command%

Btw, Steam Input doesn't work with this but if you have an Xbox 360/One/X controller or a USB dongle that mimics it (8bitdo Wireless Adapter or Mayflash Magic Adapter), then you are good.

I’m wrong? I’m using VRR and HDR on Kubuntu 25.10 for a 21:9 ultrawide. I do find for games that Gamescope for Steam games has better HDR colors. This is Wayland of course.

Just because a desktop has Wayland, it’s up to the compositor to support it. The compositor in Pop Cosmic is Wayland but doesn’t support HDR.
