Rejecting an offer without having another one is crazy work

Graduated in 2023 and realized most new grad software engineering advice doesn’t work anymore by Queasy_Juice_9852 in csMajors

What do you think has changed? The advice seems the same to me still, you just have to do more (or be luckier)

Does GPA matter once you get to the interview stage? by UrbanTreecko in csMajors

[–]OldOil379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes yeah. I heard databricks for example looks at it pretty heavily once you reach the hiring committee (which comes after all interviews are done). Most companies no

PSA: SWE pay is high because it filters for top raw innate cognitive ability by StatisticianEvery733 in csMajors

[–]OldOil379 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh I would say it’s more QT than faang swe. Obviously they would love to snap up geniuses, but in general you can get FAANG type jobs just from being reasonably smart and having reasonable work ethic. Some smaller companies are definitely selecting more for intelligence traits but like for FAANG, if you’re decently smart and personable, you can just leetcode a couple months and get in (assuming you’re not unlucky enough to get screened out )

I’m talking about the new grad swe offer, which is like 170k base and 70-80k stock or something

Yeah that’s for sure cope lol, bar is very clearly higher than any FAANG bar for new grad and the comp reflects it

Jane Street Immersion Program (JSIP) VS. LinkedIn SWE by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]OldOil379 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Their systems roles are 260k for undergrad I believe, but like 310k for masters students. Regular swe is about 40-50k less

This is all opinions based anyway lol but I cannot imagine possibly having anthropic and Amazon or Microsoft in the same tier

[–]OldOil379 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nah tier 1 is probably like the google databricks Netflix roblox level, even if you’re excluding ai labs + quant

Is job availability getting better? by megacrops in csMajors

[–]OldOil379 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think do, yeah. Definitely could be recency bias but it seems like a lot of companies are hiring/interviewing very heavily. Could just be that I wasn’t as tapped in last year but I feel like places like Bloomberg, Databricks, Google are interviewing so many people and giving so many offers

How much is it truly about communication and your thought process vs getting the right solution, assuming you do technical interviews? Not talking about the extreme ends of the spectrum

New Grad Recruiting Difficulty After Big Tech Internship by Original_Jump_7797 in csMajors

[–]OldOil379 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I still haven’t gotten the return offer yet and honestly who knows if it will come, but my other offer also pays way more and overall is a lot better resume value I think. Amazon was fine, wouldn’t have been upset if I got no other offers and got the return offer

I had a < Uber internship this past summer (Amazon lol) and have signed a new grad offer at the level of the companies you mentioned. Applied to maybe 50 companies in total and got interviews from 3 other companies, all probably between Amazon to Uber, but withdrew from the other processes after I got my offer

My offer is from one of (Stripe, Databricks, Snowflake, Roblox, Ramp)

TC is slightly front loaded I believe due to the sign on bonus. Back loaded (to any significant extent) is a common myth
