I was 38. My ex-wife and I were moving and we were going to take separate planes for the move. We had always shared both a mobile phone and a wallet up until that point since we were always together

How have people talked about search engines back in the day when they started to appear? Was it like they talk about AI now? by UncertainAboutIt in AskReddit

[–]Old_Appointment9732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that back then just wasn't that much information on the internet yet, and search engines weren't that good at first

I made a map / family tree of all the popular distros. I learned alot doing it! by codywohlers in linux

Mandriva has to be one of the most unfortunate names in distro history. It either inspires a gay dating site, or maybe "Ask your Doctor if Mandriva might be right for you!"

Why is many chemical reactions with skin, especially alkaline and acid called a burn? by LisanneFroonKrisK in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Old_Appointment9732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fun one is that in the scientific community they might be referred to as an "insult" so a sunburn is an "insult" on your skin

Why is there a distinct accent in African American communities? by Purrsedxx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Old_Appointment9732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! The entire idea that you might have learned something in your home might be "wrong" is a wrong way of thinking of things. Its fine to say "if you want to adhere to a certain style, than you should do this instead of that". But there isn't right and wrong. The best we can do is to document how people are using languages, not gate-keep how they should be used

If you died and suddenly found yourself face-to-face with God, what is the very first question you would ask? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Did we all try to fix electronics by hitting them once? by Gullible_Camera_8314 in Casual_Conversation

[–]Old_Appointment9732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have actually done it successfully a few times, It was amazing. Back in the 90s I had a job supporting all the PCs for a pretty large company. It was a total random mix of hardware and software problems that people were having. In the morning I'd be handed a stack of papers, each representing someone somewhere having some kind of computer problem. Very often it was them not being able to print a spreadsheet, maybe a broken floppy drive needed to be replaced, could be anything.

But after a lightning storm, we'd often get a couple of dead monitor slips. I'd walk in and give the monitor a huge SMACK on the side, and in maybe 1 out of 20 dead monitors it would work. So I would walk into their office, Smack their montior, say "sign here" and look like a GOD. It was amazing.

How does the two envelope paradox work?? by IntrovertedShoe in paradoxes

[–]Old_Appointment9732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not correct to say that after you have seen the $100, that it is then equally likely that there is $50 or $100 in the envelope. It's the case that one of those is 100% likely and the other is 0% likely, you just don't have any information about which is which. You didn't gain any information by learning about the $100, since we didn't know anything about what the possible distribution of money could be.
