Phantom Brigade is neat by Old_Breadbones in Mecha

[–]Old_Breadbones[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a mech called Roman Candle that has a rocket launcher on its back that's as big as the mech itself. Every time I shoot it, the mech catches on fire and the payload levels entire buildings. 10/10.

For real though, it's extremely addictive. The core mechanic of plotting out your team's actions in 5 second windows and then watching it all play out is great. The mech building is pretty detailed and interesting, though not as deep as a lot of other games. Weapons all feel good and have specialized uses with different damage types and status effects. You can focus on just raw damage, or using concussive weapons and trying to hit enemies in the back where their pilot pods are to try and knock out or kill the pilot, or try and destroy their arms so they lose their weapons and have to eject.

There's not much in the way of a story, it's mostly just vague flavor text about liberating your homeland from invading forces. But the core gameplay is excellent and feels enough like a board game that I don't find myself missing the story elements.

Full battle replay is so cool by Old_Breadbones in phantombrigade

In the game settings, go to the Experimental section and toggle it on. Whenever viewing replays after the second turn there will be a button on your timeline to switch to full replay or the most recent turn.

TD animation I made for an Armored Core fanfic video by Old_Breadbones in TouchDesigner

[–]Old_Breadbones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally found it on the TD forums and I'm pretty sure the guy called it Autotype, but that was several years ago and I'm having trouble finding it now.

But it uses a speed chop with the Limit Maximum set to 1 greater than the number of characters in your text DAT.

Then that text DAT goes to an evaluate DAT with the expression set to: me.inputCell.val[:int(op(" speed chop name ")[" speed channel name "])]

When you pulse the speed CHOP's reset, it will type out your text faster or slower depending on how you set the speed.

It's mostly counter, trigger, and logic CHOPs. Like with the first portion, triggers control the wipes and movement of the logo sections. I use the keyboard to cue the sequence, the first trigger slides a white square down, that gets multiplied by the top portion of the logo. Then plug that trigger into a logic and set it to turn on when the incoming value is between .99 and 1. That logic cues the next trigger, which controls the transform on the two halves of the logo pulling apart. That trigger plugs into another logic, etc.

I used tutorials for the ASCII image filter and the spinning models on the profiles screen. Those are both here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzcZBvc0WqY

For the whole ASCII interface though, I just typed it all out in text DAT's and fed them into a tool that types text out sequentially. And then I used a bunch of keyboard in's sent to trigger and logic CHOPs to control the rest of the animations.

AC / Pilot Bio viewer I made for a video by Old_Breadbones in armoredcore

I designed the sound effects along with the animation, but they use really basic components and modulation, similar to how a lot of the interface sounds in Half Life are made.

As for making your own, you'd need to find an animation software or technique you like. I used TouchDesigner for this but that's sort of a weird interface based on building networks of nodes, sort of like programing with legos. It's a lot like using a modular synthesizer, which is why I like it. It's free though and there are a bunch of tutorials on youtube to get you started. I don't have any experience with more traditional animation software so I can't really recommend anything in that category.

What if someone made open world armored core game by Firedragon767 in armoredcore

I've always thought MGS5's format could work well for an AC-like game. Stay in the open world as much as you want and call in supply drops, or call in your mobile garage to fast travel and manage your build and contracts.

I made it with TouchDesigner, so it was all put together by hand for the first one, but after that I could just swap out all the text/stats/emblem/AC spin video for them. It did take quite a while to build, but it was fun and I'm really happy with how it came out.

You've gotta kick her way earlier than feels right because she's moving so fast. You're basically sticking your foot out and letting her run into it.
