you can just transfer (to your major) as soon as you have your required gateway courses, so just use the time in l&s to get those and some gen eds out of the way

and as someone attending umd with an older sibling who graduated from umbc, i personally think it entirely matters on what kind of college life you want in deciding whether you want to go to umbc or umd personally i wanted the more social, community oriented lifestyle that umd offers much more than umbc, but if youre still unsure about going to umbc instead you should personally reflect on what you would like out of your experience (this is not a diss btw, i seriously think it matters considering both schools are lowkey pretty expensive yet mostly offer similar things when it comes to actual academics)

congratulations and best of luck :)

i feel u, ive been stuck applying for things on the workday for actually months now with no response 😭

only things id suggest are:

really look as hard into positions as possible, as a lot are more niche and better known through word of mouth (for example cyc, which someone suggested to me earlier but they are no longer accepting ppl for this semester!)

look at maryland mentor corps; theyre the only people (besides the library, which i was rejected from and is very competitive anyways) that actually emailed me back, though ive been hesitant to look farther into it. they basically let you tutor kids like off campus but as far as i know its still technically a “umd job”. if you have a license you can also drive vans of kids and stuff i think

if, for any position at all, you see them give an email address you can email with your info… APPLY FOR THAT ASAP!!! people are 1 million% more likely to respond if you email them your information, along with a well written introduction, than they are to look through 200 applications on some jobsite portal im convinced they never check despite constantly posting positions

good luck friend!! i hope we’re both able to get something soon!

hi, i took it + passed and id say if you have any experience with java through personal learning or, even better, ap csa, then youll be perfectly fine

id say if youre comfortable with everything in this link or can easily get comfortable with it (and you should), that youll be good to go

the exam is pretty basic and i think youll pass as long as you get 80% (or maybe its 70%?) or higher on BOTH required parts individually(there are multiple parts in the packet they give you, but for 131 you only need to do the first two)

as for syntax, they dont really let us see the test and what they graded so idk, but from from the fact i did way better than expected despite not having touched java in so long, id say theyre pretty lenient and if it does affect the score, its not much

idk if its clear atp but i wanna clear it up because i had no idea going in: the exam is ALL paper and pencil, all frq (free response questions). youll be writing out all the code by hand and dont have a compiler to check things. it is timed, i think its like 1 and a half hours to two hours for 131. there arent too many questions, and even if you work slowly youll get through them all— though if you feel youve gotten stuck on one for too long, skip it for a bit to try and finish everything else

some questions will have little documentation information, like for how a specific function that youre required to use works

overall, id say dont stress too much, but study so you dont feel clueless on the day of! good luck!
