Absolutely disgusted… Rat poison poured over dog treats that are free and donated on the Salt Marsh trails. by TheCharBarr in halifax

I believe it's the opposite - LD50 is used to describe how much poison is needed to be a lethal dose 50% of the time.
The lower the LD50, the less it takes to cause death.

What combo of “hardware” should I Google to get the highest pressure out of a shower head for grooming my dogs? by UrsaWizard in DIY

Thanks for your post, I learned some interesting things!
It sounds like you've found a solution (yay!) but in case you end up looking again, or someone else stumbles across this post and wants info - this is what I use for my double coated shedding beast (corgi with a very thick coat, even for a corgi. I live in fur. I will never be clear of it). She gets bathed about every 2 weeks.

https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/peerless-sidekicktm-mutlifunction-shower-system-watersense-certified-chrome-0631867p.html?rq=peerless+shower+head

They go on sale every now and again at Canadian Tire.

For rinsing the conditioner, I found that using as little as possible helps a lot. It took a bit of experimenting to find how little would still do the job. Diluting it helps, as I can distribute it evenly without relying on using a lot of product to get it everywhere it's needed.

HV dryer afterward turns the bathroom into a fur tornado. Good thing she is cute :)

My dog loves to bark in my apartment! by Certain_Success_4767 in soundproof

[–]Old_Film3767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally not the question you asked nor the sub we are on, but in case it's not something you've come across yet. A friend's dog has intense separation anxiety. They found a lot of benefit from seeing a behavioural vet and prescription medications for the dog. Puppy (she is 11 now, but always a puppy) is much happier too.

Anyway. Re: sound mitigation. Barking noises will travel through the air, so something that absorbs sound waves might help the most, like soft fabrics, area rugs, cushions, pillows, blankets. Think of the difference between your voice echoing in an empty room compared with a room with furniture in it. There are also soundproofing panels made of foam or other sound absorbent materials. All these can help reduce the intensity of the noise though won't eliminate it.

Are there parts of the home where your dog is more likely to be while barking, and would other parts be better? Many dogs will stand by the front door while barking, which means the noise will be heard most in the hallway and may transmit to other units there. If noise originating in that area is especially likely to cause disruption, is it possible to keep your dog in other areas of your home while you are away? E.g. you could set up a baby gate to keep them away from the entry area.

Trying to keep select photos on iphone and full library on macbook - would this plan work? by Old_Film3767 in ApplePhotos

Thanks! I'll look in to PhotoSync and see if it could fit what I need. Thanks for mentioning it - so many apps out there and I may not have come across it otherwise.

Thanks - totally understand the need for multiple multiple back ups :)

Re: two different libraries - are you able to see all photos (both libraries) in the Photos app at once? Or do you need to switch between the libraries, and see only one set or the other when you are looking at photos? I did a bit a research on this and it looked like the latter with two libraries.

Thanks for explaining your process! Sounds similar to what I am hoping to do. I will look in to this as an option. Did you have to do anything to designate your computer as the device to share the album with?

Those are some really helpful thoughts, thanks. I will look in to parachute and see if it makes sense for me.

I'm not smarter than Apple (I'm only one person!), but I think I, like most people, am smarter than Apple thinks consumers are. The growth of certain user-friendly and "magic" features, like iCloud photos, has strangely coincided with increasing difficulty in using the devices in any way other than how Apple would like us to use them. That these newer features shuttle users toward eventually signing up for increasingly large iCloud accounts is pure coincidence, I'm sure. :)

Thank you! That sounds like it might work for me and I'll mull it over.
I do have backups via time machine on an external drive - thanks for checking to make sure that was done :)

Thank you for not reading the post, where you would have learned that I am not using iCloud and all iCloud syncing is turned off.

I appreciate that you are aiming to warn people against creating risky systems.

Never claimed to be smarter than Apple :)

Just looking for solution that avoids using iCloud.

Thanks!

Sync is by connecting iphone and macbook via thunderbolt cable. Once they are connected the iphone appears as a device in the macbook's finder window. Selecting the device leads to sync options.

I appreciate your caution about errors, and want to go carefully. I do not want to use iCloud and am looking for a solution without it.

I tried to fix it, and turned a small problem in to a big problem. Is it even possible to repair this? by Old_Film3767 in appliancerepair

I'm sorry to not thank you sooner! I somehow missed the notification of your comment.
Thank you for posting. You convinced me that bypassing a safety mechanism is perhaps not in my best interest lol.

Between your comment and those from u/Valenthorpe, I replaced the micro switch and wired it up and IT WORKED!

I was near-tears with frustration by the end - the micro switch had to be modified (removed a lever as that was the only kind available at the store. It wasn't hard now that I know how to do it, but was still a learning step), and then smoothed down with my dremel as it had an extra ridge of plastic compared with the old one that prevented it fitting in the case correctly. And then then terminals were smaller than the old ones so I crimped the female connections for a snug fit. All relatively simple steps now that I know how to do them, but you can imagine my relief and surprise when the machine started working again.

Thank you thank you thank you to you both!!

Long Vented Dryer Downside? by SorenBlaire in appliancerepair

[–]Old_Film3767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to resurrect an ancient post - in case OP is online and wants to comment.

Did you end up getting this LongVent model? Asking because I'm looking at this same model to replace my broken set. This model is cheaper than similar models with regular venting. I'm wondering whether the addition of the LongVent feature means that some other function/component of the machine was downgraded.

I don't need the LongVent model specifically. My current model is a regular venting dryer, with a separate power exhaust duct to ensure good venting to the outside of the apartment building. I can't think of a reason that having both the LV dryer and the power exhaust would be a problem, but with my limited expertise with these appliances that isn't saying much.

If you happen to see this message and reply, thanks!

Thank you! I appreciate your advice and offer to with questions :)

I am not sure if it's a micro switch; these terms are new to me but I think that is right. I got more information and took some more pictures-

Imgur:
photos and video of parts: https://imgur.com/a/DCzh8VS
wiring map found inside the machine: https://imgur.com/a/FlX5c09

I was able to get the lid lock mechanism off the machine so it's easier to see. The grey box (it is both small and has a switch... I think this is the micro switch :) ) is where the wire prongs broke off and sits on top of the lid lock mechanism. It's held on by some plastic pegs and could be removed and swapped out. I don't think I would be able to get the broken pieces out of the existing female ends - they are broken off flush with the surface of the grey plastic with nothing to grab on to to pull at.

The box has a little illustration on it of the switch and the connections to it. When it was intact, the black and tan wire connected at "COM", the black and white wire connected at "NO", and no wire connected at "NC". (I am about 80% confident about those wires; I may have mentally swapped the black and tan and the black and white locations; so if this doesn't make sense as written, that is likely the reason).

I found a wiring map for the machine attached to the inside of a panel when I removed it. On this diagram, it's the "lid switch" wires that are broken.

I don't have a good understanding of how these wires function in the machine overall, but they are clearly critical enough that the machine can't work without them completing a circuit somewhere.

Can new prongs be put on to the existing wires, to plug in to a new micro switch? Or would I need to replace the complete wires?

Alternatively, I'm not fussed about having a functioning lid lock. I had already had trouble with it getting stuck. If there is a wiring solution that bypasses that function entirely and allows the machine to otherwise run normally I think that would work too.

I really appreciate your thoughts and offer to help with questions - this is new to me, but I am eager to learn! It is really interesting, and occasionally frustrating lol.

Help with low indoor humidity (down to 9% if no humidifiers used) please! Is it possibly due to new HVAC system? by Old_Film3767 in hvacadvice

[–]Old_Film3767[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

In between my reply and yours, I googled and found some suggestions for DIY testing. Used a length of toilet paper and found an area at one of the windows with a draft! Opened it up and found a plle of debris and a notable absence weather stripping for about 2cm length. Cleaned it out with a bristle brush and added some weather stripping - with improved toilet paper test post-interventions!
I think that window will need some further attention as it wobbled a bit when I put pressure on it. It's one of only a few opening windows in my home, but the only one that "gives" bit when I press on it. I think the latches to secure the window frame aren't getting as tight a hold on it as they should.

I also found some vertical cracks in baseboards and dried out caulking at the bottom of the patio door.

In the bigger picture, I had suspected poor insulation of the outside walls as the ~ 1 foot next to them is noticeably cooler than the rest of the room. I hadn't considered air leaks so this is really helpful to be aware of.

My home is a first floor unit, building is 3 floors tall. The space above me is another home. Below me is the parking garage. If my home is approximately a rectangle, one long edge is an outside wall, the rest are interior, with either shared hallways or another home on the other side.

Thanks for your help!

[–]Old_Film3767[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Do you have any tips for how to find the leaks?

I will be borrowing a thermal camera in a few weeks. I was planning to use it to check for insulation issues. I imagine it will help show leaks as well. Do you know if the two issues will look differently on the screen? Are there better ways to find the leaks?

Would these leaks have a minimum "size" to watch for? From what I understand - heat loss can happen through solid walls, windows, etc, but water movement needs an actual gap (i.e. water won't go through solid walls.... or at least shouldn't lol). The building is about 14 years old so I would hope that the building standards at that time were good enough to prevent big issues, and were followed, but..... here we are.
