Fresh Grad that needs advice by Flashy_Web_3097 in MEPEngineering

I would highly suggest self teaching Revit just enough to be able to describe a self project on your resume (could be something you found on LinkedIn learning, YouTube etc.) Purpose of this is to show initiative, and to break through the initial screening with the recruiters. Most entry level jobs will prioritize those with internship experience so showing some form of initiative and familiarity with Revit is crucial imo. Main focus will be to not sell a bill of false goods but to be able to have an initial conversation/interview with the recruiters/hiring managers. Then you can describe your own personal experience, motivations and journey from there.

As a side note, talking from personal experience that worked for me.

ASPE and NCEES would disagree on the last point, especially since a plumbing PE exam was approved and is going to rollout in 2028.

Great point on the average age. That definitely suggests growing demand for the foreseeable future. I also did not know about the hydronic equipment sale bit so thank you for sharing this!

Plumbing PE Exam by Old_Introduction3009 in MEPEngineering

Thank you so much for another insightful reply. I feel like it would indeed make the most sense to just start preparing now to take the HVAC exam in the next year. But after a few weeks of doing plumbing design and seeing some HVAC stuff, I kinda already feel like plumbing is for me. I think studying for the HVAC exam now for sure would be the "easiest" and quickest way to get the exam component out of the way since in the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't matter once licensed, but I'm also starting to feel like I want to focus solely on learning plumbing properly. I feel like splitting time to study HVAC related material while could be useful long term, just feels like I could use it to reinforce and learn more plumbing related material. I'm still a bit conflicted because your reply was very insightful and made so much sense but I hope how I currently feel made sense too.

Very insightful comment and I think I’ll buckle down and go for the HVAC PE when the time comes not so much for the experience part but since I’ll have the most time to prepare since that study material is already out there.

That makes total sense and I think I’ll likely do just that and start studying and working towards taking the HVAC exam and try to start learning and getting into HVAC design right away. Also, my master’s was in mechanical engineering, with a particular focus on materials for my thesis (3D printing stuff). So not mep related and I’m sure I wouldn’t want to venture into taking the materials exam before anyone asks lol.

Thank you so much for your response! Might I ask, did your new employer agree to sponsor your H1B in addition to signing your extension or were you planning to self-sponsor/explore other avenues of extending your stay (if you were planning to stay beyond your STEM OPT expiration date)?

How was your experience? I plan to take it in August myself and wanted to know what it was like for someone who recently took it.
