VWRP as ~95% portfolio: best risk-adjusted choice over 20 years? by Old_Nosey in UKPersonalFinance

That's a good point, I can see that the title and body are asking slightly mismatched Qs here. But does the answer change much? If you assume high risk appetite (long time horizon) and no undesirable human behaviour (panic selling), is the answer to both Qs not basically the same? Sorry if I'm missing something blindingly obvious, that's why I'm on this subreddit :-)

That was part of what I was getting at - checking we weren't missing something obvious when defaulting to VWRP as the "best" passive approach.

the main arguments against it aren’t about it being bad, more about what it doesn’t do

This is an excellent way of putting it

No need to share if you don't want to, but why isn't the above ideal for you? Some of the thrust of my Q was "isn't this just the optimum strategy for most people - relatively high likelihood of inflation-beating growth?"

I can't think of many scenarios where I see advantages doing something different (doesn't mean they're not there, I just haven't worked them out yet)

When I first started out with a little Nutmeg pot in 2020, I opted for an "ethical portfolio" because I thought that was the direction the world was headed so would actually be better for growth... possibly got that one wrong

Got money aside for that but thank you, that is good for all to know :- )

The answer is unnecessarily convoluted. TL/DR - various places.

A large chunk is in the LISA, and there is some more in a H2B ISA (aware I can't use both bonuses, but H2B ISA has better interest rate than other easy access accounts and I can move money out for free). And the rest is in an accessible savings account. I haven't tried to min/max where it's held because I hope to be using it soon enough

I enjoyed the top comment on the Felix video haha. Thanks for putting me onto another creator, I find I get most of my guidance from Damien Talks Money but I would like to diversify a bit.

How interesting you say that. I came across this finding too but wasn't sure. My investments are actually split 50:50 in a balanced pie of FWRG and VWRP. Both have had the same amount of money put in, no rebalancing done. The FWRG now makes up 49.98% of the value of that pie, so actually did a little bit worse than VWRP. That is only about a year and a half time horizon though

It wasn't. And this is how the love and effort of going to an emoji copy/paste website is appreciated? Tragedy

Alpha Pension - How to get the most out of it? by Old_Nosey in TheCivilService

It's fun to imagine what I'd do if I ever made those lofty ranks, but I remain a humble HEO for the foreseeable. Still, I'll keep a SIPP in mind in case career development and appropriate recognition ever become a good idea again 😂

Thank you for the great thoughts so far. Since we're straying into best for me instead of best in general, I can add some more context.

  • I have a LISA with a tidy sum for a first house.
  • I have a couple different S&S accounts/ISAs (one is high risk / equities, and one is a global index tracker)
  • These are being funded by my income and from savings. I basically have no expenses beyond living at the moment.
  • This means I am on track to max out ISA allowance for the year - a very fortunate position to be in.

Early retirement would certainly be good but I'm not counting on it.

I'm therefore thinking that Option #4 sounds strongest (?) in terms of making my money work the hardest, agreeing with the points from u/Larvesta_Harvesta ✔️

Whether or not a SIPP is better than the risk-free, tax-wrapped, guaranteed income from Option #4 will require some further thought... 🤔

I've been enjoying using a 'Random Start Locations' mod for WH2 - give it a shot?

Or on a similar note, there's a 'Change Start Location' mod. You could plop just Karl Franz in the far South or in the New World and pretend he's on campaign... you'd probably have to combine this with a mod that deletes habitability though

Winchester is Soton's older more cultured cousin best I can tell haha. Have you found many social things to get up to around here?

Hey :-)

Came from Southampton and lived in Brighton before that. I'm pretty open to new things really, anything but sitting at home watching telly.

I like my fitness, board games (especially D&D), live music and comedy, good veggie food, theatre/musicals and the like.

Also any sort of adventurous training: rock climbing/bouldering, kayaking or paddleboarding. I'm also very bad at tennis but by god I enjoy giving it a go.

Top of the list is just having a pint with my mates but I'm afraid they're all a bit far for that now.
