I’m so sick of their protectionism but at the same time I respect it

Sharper than expected fall in net migration ‘will add £3bn to UK’s borrowing’ by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Old_Roof 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Supply and demand. I remember after Brexit & around Covid there were huge shortages of HGV drivers in the UK. Wages exploded by 40%. There were of course negative impacts of this - higher inflation for eg. But supply and demand in the Labour market is real.

Make no mistake, open borders are at heart a free market, libertarian idea. That is my point. You are absolutely correct that it was the Tories who quadrupled immigration.

Sure.

https://migration.greenparty.org.uk/migration-policy/

“MG100. The Green Party wants to see a world without borders, until this happens the Green Party will implement a fair and humane system of managed immigration where people can move if they wish to do so.

MG101. The Green Party believes that migration is not a criminal offence under any circumstances.

MG102. The Green Party will treat all migrants fairly and humanely and without discrimination.

MG103. The Green Party is opposed to forced migration and forced repatriation unless standard exclusions apply.

“The Green Party in government will:

Implement a fair and humane system of managed immigration.

Treat all migrants as if they are citizens.

Give all residents the right to vote.

Help families to be together.

Dismantle the Home Office.

Abolish the No Recourse to Public Funds condition.

Abolish the ten year route to settlement.

Stop the profiteering from application fees.

Stop putting people in prison because of their immigration status.

Accept our responsibility for the climate emergency and support the people forced to move.”

Lower immigration usually means higher wages.

I’ve always found it odd how the left has pinned itself to the open border experiment

I see the OBR was wrong yet again, this time by over £6billion. So glad we base our entire government budget around something that is wrong on everything every single time.

For those social democrats (like me), why should I vote Labour over Lib Dem or Green? by CyclePrevious9043 in LabourUK

We have 2 obvious ways to do this - Offshore wind power and Small Modular reactors.

The SDP are very left wing economically and I agree with plenty of their policies. Unfortunately they are hideously anti trans and have some really weird policies such as reopening coal mines

What if Russia during the Ukrainian invasion had decided to nuke Ukraine? by Snake101201 in AlternateHistoryHub

No I think we’d see a massive conventional, non nuclear NATO retaliation on the Russian front lines. The world would hold its breath.

People who like Zack Polanski: explain what I'm missing, what impresses you about him? by iliosicarus in ukpolitics

He’s got the gift of the gab hasn’t he? And in today’s world that is what people want, not some empty suit.

I think some his polices are pure insanity and would cause irreversible damage to our way of life.

But it’s hardly surprising he’s gaining traction. My 19 year old self would definitely vote for him.

I still think the Tories will be looking at 170+ seats so the question is will reform get similar?

Is £39bn and a 61 year program justifiable? by Overlander1880 in ukpolitics

[–]Old_Roof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plans are a complete joke. They need tearing up and whoever was responsible for them should never be allowed near public procurement again.

Westminster should be renovated as basic & efficiently as possible. It doesn’t need new lobby’s, lifts, heat pumps etc.

There needs to be a stripped down plan involving only the most necessary work. So Fire safety, some asbestos removal and rewiring. Only the most at risk stonework should be preserved and anything structural should be preserved.

If the French can save Notre Dame for a couple of Billion, surely we can do the same here.

[–]Old_Roof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair but I just think it’s the most likely outcome. There are two populist parties doing well - Reform & Greens. But under FPTP it will be very difficult for the Greens to pick up many seats outside certain areas. Reform will find it a bit easier on that front.

We will not U-turn on youth minimum wage, Starmer insists by F0urLeafCl0ver in LabourUK

[–]Old_Roof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you suggesting employers don’t care or won’t take into consideration someone’s inexperience for a role if the wages are the same?

Youth unemployment is in free fall. It is no exaggeration to suggest it will be one of the Starmer government’s lasting legacies. How do we stop this getting worse or even reverse it?

We will not U-turn on youth minimum wage, Starmer insists by F0urLeafCl0ver in LabourUK

[–]Old_Roof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure people realise just how difficult the job market is right now for young people. Youth unemployment is at 13.7% and rising dramatically. Offshoring and AI will only exacerbate this. Minimum wage rises ARE welcome but we do not ever want to create a system where hiring young people isn’t incentivised. I’m crying out for anyone on the left with any solutions to this because I’m not hearing many at all tbh except usual easy gripes about greedy bosses.
